I remember the best day ever at Malibu in 1964... bright and sunny, the waves 6-10' and perfect, the wind slightly offshore. Every great surfer on the West Coast was there, and short boards hadn't even been invented yet. A "short" board was approx. 9' 2," and mine was a Dewey Weber 9' 5" pig board. But those were the days! I'll never forget it if I live to be 100.
tiffsaver I remember a few of those days as well..early 60's no weenies around. My 9'8" Greg Noll. Kids these days do things on surfboards and ride waves that we never thought of doing back then but when it comes down to it those are the days I remember: standing on the nose of my board on a 3 foot wave on a beautiful day. No Worries.
Philip Hughes That's not a surfboard, that's the Queen Mary!! Lots of good memories, brother. I'm 66 and now live in New York City, but your story brought it all back, the sun, the water... made me feel 16 again. Thanks.
tiffsaver Glad you liked it. As they say, those were the days! I paid $175 for that board new in '65.. I shoulda kept it, saw one like it for sale recently...$2500 bucks in mint condition. Mine had more than a few dings when I got around to selling it,
tiffsaver I saw Dewey out the next summer '65 around July 4 weekend. Dewey was completely dominating. Never fell once. I saw another good swell later in August with Dora, Barry K, Buzz Sutphin and a bunch of other greats out. A magic spot for sure.
I use to ride my Webber Performer model there for 8yrs. Not any more.Water is filthy now. But Malibu has great waves. One evening 30 yrs. ago. Off shore and 11 ft. swell.Never forget that one.
THANKS FOR THE VIDEOS, THESE GUYS AND WOMEN SURE KNOW HOW TO SOME FANCY FOOTWORK !!!! THANKS FOR THE VIDEOS !!! KEEP THEM COMING !!!! FROM A SURFER STUCK IN COLORADO !!!!! MARK !!!!!
I'm going to Malibu in October, is this a good time to bodyboard, are the waves decent? I'm not a pro but waves like these are good. If not October then when? Thanks
TatertOOt Malibu isn't any good for bellyboarders, you'll get run over!! Many other breaks in California to check out, though, just check the surf reports. Winter is usually when it gets the biggest, but sometimes you'll get lucky with big storm somewhere offshore coming through.

Anyone know why those drones don't have safety shields around the blades? It's not funny trying to relax on a beach with a flying chainsaw overhead. Are they waiting till someone dies before they fix this?

October can be "THE" month. Those Santa Ana's are blowing and the southwests are cranking out of the Southern Hemis. An all time day in '73.
