The upgrade vs more tower heuristic is super simple. If your equivalent gold expenditure to upgrade a tower does not produce the same amount of extra dps as a new tower provides, then a new tower is better. Though there is a second factor, having 2 seperate aim points is objectively better than having 1 single aim point, due to that increasing the chance that the selected target is already on low health and a kill-shot, which makes said single shot more valuable. So arguably, even if the upgrade gives 20% more damage than a new tower for the same gold cost, it might still be better to get a new tower. People in chat instantly saying "upgrades are better" on a new game they never played since it released 5 minutes ago, are simply assuming OTHER games were made with the same balance as this new game, which one cannot assume, because it makes an ass out of you and me. Same thing applies to RTS games for example. I've seen people rush upgrades that give +1 damage because "upgrades are always better", when they have 3 units of said type, which would result in +3 dps output, compared to spending the same resources on 5 extra units, which would give more dps output. Yes, i play Zerg. How could you tell.
I watched this on stream, and Tower Defense + Roguelike is right up my alley, but I'm definitely not playing this until they improve the UI, what the heck were they thinking when they made it?

You see it all the time when you scale an older game to a larger monitor. UI does not scale with for some reason.
I think the issue is that "They" are not a "They", as in non-plural. The game is made by ONE person IIRC. He/she might have more game-design chops (and musical chops) than he/she does UI/UX skill. Here is to hoping this commercial success lets them hire on a specialist who can shore up the game's one major flaw.
