My sister (24 at the time) bought the first Miata in our home town back when they came out for 1990. It was basic red with no options and a stick shift. Even though it had 116 horse it was a blast to drive in every sense of the word. So nimble and a shifter direct from God. This is literally the best executed car for what it’s meant to be. Light, nimble and the modest limits made it possible to drive a car at 10-10ths without prison time. By the way this opinion is coming from a guy who has owed endless classic muscle cars and new Z06’s, M5’s etc. The problem with Miata is that they made each update less attractive, fatter and less true to its mission than the previous one. This in between year model isn’t as bad as the newer ones but the aero package on this one is f***ing hideous. Same for the oversized wheels.
I bought one of the first 200 Miatas built (43rd car sold in Mazda's South Central division, June 1, 1989) and drove it daily for 10 years, until it was taken out by a Chevy Lumina. Best car I ever owned. The kansei engineering really made the difference. Happy that Bill mentioned the importance of the Power Plant Frame, too. I continue to be impressed by the attention to detail delivered in the NA Miata.

My gal's 102,000-mile '01 Miata NB is, like yours, silver w/ tan top. She christened her "Belle." Miatas are honest, genuine, thoroughly engineered, yet simple sport cars. ("Sport" single, according to Carroll Shelby, who certainly knew.) Like the NBs like yours and hers better than the first-generation NAs w/ their pop up headlights. NBs are more refined. The newest Miatas lost the happy A-H Sprite smiling radiator opening, too much styly testoterone. But the NBs don't have a bad line. Anyone can make a long, big car look elegant. Doing so on a car a Miata's size is high art. Thanks for the vid.
When these came out I loved the fact that they were a return to the more curvy, sinewy styling of yore, since I really didn't care for the straight-edge bodylines from the mid-'70s through 80s.
Proud owner of a 2004 Mazdaspeed Miata in St Petersburg, Fl. Supreme condition, 38K miles. Like Bill said, I never thought I’d love a Miata either. It’s all about usable power and balance. I love a C5/C6 Corvette but I’m going to jail in those cars. The Miata allows you to ring it out and have fun while keeping it simple. The answer is always Miata 😎…..
That the NB Miata resembles a baby Viper is no coincidence. Ken Saward, head of Mazda design USA got his start at Chrysler and worked on the Viper program. He also owned an NA Miata while working at Chrysler. When he moved over to Mazda, and had the opportunity to design the NB Miata, the Viper influence carried over through his own experience.
I had the same 5 speed torsen diff. Great combination. Believe it or not but the torsen made the car quite good in the snow. 6' + works in cloth seats which are lower to the floor plan than the leather.
Gorgeous! I remember when these were new on the lot there was a yellow "tupperware" one that had body colored headlight covers that trimmed down the perimeter of the headlight area.
Excellent review on the history of the Miata. Bill knocks it out of the park and we expect nothing less. Can you please update us on Suzanne’s whereabouts and where her vehicle is? Cheers Bill. I never miss a review and often revisit a previous one.
I remember when they came out, they were cute and with the front air intake they looked like they were smiling, a good little car and definitely a big tuner/racer community with them!
I used to notice them, from 1989 until late June 2018 when my wife said she wanted to go autocrossing. So, I bought her a 2001 with a 6 speed. She learned how to drive it and I fell in love with how incredible this cars handling is. My car still had its factory original, 17yr old tires. Even those rock hard donuts didn't diminish the excellence of this car. I replaced them a year later with Continental ExtremeContact Sport tires and whoa! Now, she wants to sell it because she would rather drive my GTO. So, I'm keeping them both. Her too.

Not a huge Mazda fan, but the Miata was/is second to none and didn’t need a ton of power and/or loaded with tech, to be so. Bill, I absolutely love the MX5 and I'm determined to own one day, but I actually don't like the body kit on that car (personal opinion). What the British missed out on when they 'owned' that particular market segment!
I drive a '99 with a chin spoil on the front and a small stock spoiler in the back. It much more subtle and the light touches are nice, they are not overkill like the one in this video.
I have my 3rd Miata, and it's my fourth roadster. Started with an NB, then an NC (but kept the NB) then went to Europe, so sold the NC took the NB overseas. Sold it there before coming back. Back in the US after 3.5 years, got me a Porsche Boxster. A mistake... Was not happy with it - really. (I must be a freak). No problems with the Boxster, but sold it after 1.5 years. And now I've got an NC and am happy again. (Don't care for the ND's looks) I'd like to have an NB again concurrently with the NC, so where and when is the auction?
Little Match Stick Girl? Dam! Bill can reference just about anything. I'm Bill's age and remember watching that movie in 3rd grade at the Catholic school I went to. I think it was produced by the same people who made Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer.
We drive - what you call - a ND from new from 2019. We drive it every day and LOVE it. Quite a contrast to my Continental Mark IV. 🧐 Golf clubs in the trunk of a MX-5? Come on 🤣 You have to limit yourself, when you grocery shopping. To our taste the one you review is pimped too much with skirts. Complaints: Even the smallest door pockets would be nice, instead of using the door handle for i.e. my phone. Turn signal indicater is too easy to ignore visually with the top down, as you cannot hear it anyway. LOVE that you can put the top up or down in a split second whilst the traffic light is red.
I was impressed with the condition of the top and the interior leather, especially the outside bolster of the driver's seat. Then I saw the engine bay. Wow! That is one clean Miata. My 02 LS engine bay is clean but it looks grungy by comparison with oxidation on some of the brackets. But mine has 36,000 miles on it and lived in Delaware for much of its life.

Had an NB and NC. Each is special in their own way. Loved the look of the hood from the driver's seat. Always reminded me of a jaguar. Agree with others that the car is better looking without the body moldings. The formula was simple, copy an british open top sports car then put a good rear suspension, don't let the top leak and most importantly make it reliable.
One time a few years ago I was out for a drive in my NA, just after sunset top down going about 25-30mph when a house sparrow swooped left to right in front of me as I drove, and went low enough that he got clipped by my passenger side popup headlight. I watched his dead little body fly over my head and land in traffic about 15 feet behind me, and I remember it like it happened today.

Back in the 90s, a friend of mine left his 1st gen Miata with me when he and his wife went on vacation. Of course I knew that (and joked to him) that since I'm very very tall, it's physically impossible for me to get behind the wheel much less take it anywhere. I joked that if my house caught fire, I'd have to push the car away.
" Garage Queen ". I've never heard that one prior yet it certainly perfectly befits an ill used vehicle. Thanks as always Bill for the reprieve from what is the bat shit crazy state of affairs. Best
- Still waiting for Peter to get an emu, just to F with you Bill. - IMOP the 2nd gen styling took more than a little inspiration from the then recent Jag XK - The early British roadsters had erector set tops - and were just about impossible to get right the first time - and forget about throwing one up if it started to rain. Try a pre-67 Spitfire, god. Probably worse examples, only one I have had to use.
With top down it seemed that the Miata had special powers to make the drivers head appear 5× larger than it really was. An automotive achievement indeed.
I owned a 2001. Oddly, the place where I found the car most lacking was it's handling. The suspension is soft and has a lot of body roll. Felt as tight as a commuter Corolla. I was expecting something with stiffer suspension from all the lore around the car. No complaints elsewhere. Easily fixed with a set of strut/springs or coil overs.
The extra plastic kit parts on the body are horrendous. They also made the bucket seats way too tall for this model year. In 2000 I purchased one similar but a more subtle body kit. It was an LS with leather and Bose audio, same color as this one.
Dammit - wish I had known about this car earlier. I would have DEFINITELY paid more than what it sold for! Oh well, my bad. Another great vid Bill, save the inability to mention your wonderful Canadian neighbors this time (that's me ....lol)

(Don't care for the ND's looks)
I'd like to have an NB again concurrently with the NC, so where and when is the auction?
I love the Miatas. Great review as always
Golf clubs in the trunk of a MX-5?
I have a 2010 Miata, and my wife and I raise hell though twisty Pennsylvania country roads. 👍👍👍👍
Edit: I drove an MG Midget in 1978, while in high school. I’m 6’2”, so picture that. 🤣
Great review of a great car. My wife has a white 2004 LS with parchment interior. It has the accessory hard top and she loves the car. We have a lot of fun with it.
"You'd think one of them just ate a toddler," he softly stated. 👍🥃🥴
1st again! And what a legend of a car. My 2004 MazdaSpeed MX-5 is happy to see the finest RUclipsr do an NB Miata. 👍🥃🥴
Cool and rare.
Is it stock?
@@MegaEdge777 Thanks Pal. I got it in '09, kept it stock for 10 years, then said to hell with it- got all kinds of Flyin' Miata bits. The Little Enchilada pack. It is an absolute hoot! Woosh PFFT! 💨
How's it been going Bill is the weather shìtty enough or not enough.
The great thing about the Miata, no matter the year - its always in style… and damn it I want a ‘Bill’ t-shirt…
Hysterical, my aunt (who Is a hairdresser) is on her third miata.
I got an NC.2 last summer, love it
Once again bill you're on the Mark. I had Hey 1990MX5In 1997With 26,000 original miles I bought it from a dentist. I was a 130 plumber I ain't got a lot of crap For it. It was white With a black Top . Hand creek windows Pop up headlights Cloth interior. It was quick nimble And you can wind it out. But I loved it Thanks for the memories
I'm going on my 3rd year with my NB. Which I thought was the most pristine NB until I saw this video.
(From Canada)
That car puts the Pris in pristine.
Puts the 'me' in Miata!
"You can see their teeth glistening from here..." LMAO
🤣🤣🤣🤣
Back in the 90s, a friend of mine left his 1st gen Miata with me when he and his wife went on vacation. Of course I knew that (and joked to him) that since I'm very very tall, it's physically impossible for me to get behind the wheel much less take it anywhere. I joked that if my house caught fire, I'd have to push the car away.
Im amazed that you didnt mention the s2000 when talking about cars like the miata.
" Garage Queen ". I've never heard that one prior yet it certainly perfectly befits an ill used vehicle. Thanks as always Bill for the reprieve from what is the bat shit crazy state of affairs. Best
I remember watching the bidding wars at the Mazda dealership next door while I was selling Nissans.... :-/
- Still waiting for Peter to get an emu, just to F with you Bill.
- IMOP the 2nd gen styling took more than a little inspiration from the then recent Jag XK
- The early British roadsters had erector set tops - and were just about impossible to get right the first time - and forget about throwing one up if it started to rain. Try a pre-67 Spitfire, god. Probably worse examples, only one I have had to use.
With top down it seemed that the Miata had special powers to make the drivers head appear 5× larger than it really was. An automotive achievement indeed.
Love this review. Thank you for keeping it funny
Bill is my favorite Tuber. Zero F's given and I love it. Keep up the good work mister.
You are so lucky Ron if ur gov and u live in a free state 💪🇱🇷
I owned a 2001.
Bill is the kind of guy who doesn't stop for snowflakes
Doesn’t brake for ❄️
Beautiful review!
Bill get a go pro. I have anxiety about the on handed thing.
I don't know a single hairdresser that would drive a convertible, it would mess up their hair!!!
The extra plastic kit parts on the body are horrendous. They also made the bucket seats way too tall for this model year. In 2000 I purchased one similar but a more subtle body kit. It was an LS with leather and Bose audio, same color as this one.
Great video as always. Greetings from cold Poland/
"Long hard day at the Camp" whoa 😂😂😂
Dammit - wish I had known about this car earlier. I would have DEFINITELY paid more than what it sold for!
Oh well, my bad.
Another great vid Bill, save the inability to mention your wonderful Canadian neighbors this time (that's me ....lol)
"...you'd think that someone on this road liked venison..."
Finally this car was at Southcoast Classic auction and did not sell. Highest bid was 16.500$ 🥴
perfect cars for the 40 to 70 mph drive on the back road .. not going to go 150 mph , just great side road drivers .. I have cars of all kinds , just got a new plaid s .. that's a lot of fun lol :) :)
I drive my 2001 LS daily. 64k miles and i wouldn’t trade it for anything
When it’s low 60’s and you have plenty of cv whiskey, who cares what day it is.
I LOVE my 5K-mile '19 GT-S!
