Bodycam: Man Allegedly Assaults, Spits on Cops During Arrest for Violent Threats

- Bodycam footage shows North Carolina cops arresting Devon Whitmire May 17 on a warrant for communicating violent threats to his family. The Asheville Police Department charged Whitmire with multiple counts of assault as a result of the incident shown on the bodycam. Local residents expressed outrage over the arrest after a bystander’s video showing a short clip of Whitmire being detained circulated on social media. A judge ordered the bodycam footage to be released to the public in response. The Law&Crime Network’s Sierra Gillespie breaks down the controversial arrest.

Not necessarily. The phrasing was poor, yes but he did nothing wrong in regards to notifying the police of his firearm (under normal circumstances and it were somebody else). If a cop asks you where it’s located, they’re asking for their safety so they can respond accordingly if you reach for it *or* if the situation is escalating. “Don’t worry about it” while backing up is escalating the situation. I got into a wreck recently and I always have a firearm in my car. When the tow truck came, I let the cop know so I could get it and secure it. They’re response: “well you better secure it”.

America needs to make a law that you can't approach, within 20 feet or so, of a law enforcement official in the act of detaining/arresting another person. That would quickly put a stop to people interfering with cops doing their jobs.
