  • We are getting deep into the touchy feely weeds of hand tool woodworking with this one. In general I find hand tools are extremely sensory in nature and the tactile feedback the tools give me are essential to my work. In this excerpt from a Hand Tool School lesson I talk about how the shape and location of the shaving in the hand plane mouth can tell you the topography of a board as well as how your last pass went. Its a solid reason to keep the mouth clear of shavings and one of those little techniques that will help you square an edge without ever reaching for a square.

Most newcomers to hand planes think that all those corrective moves are baked into the plane just being pushed straight. Little do they realize that THEY need to initiate the correction! 😂

I have figured this out by trial and error...... I really could have used this about 2 years ago when I started in on using hand tools. As for the shavings, the shaving nerds go nuts when I am on my lathes.....
