Jerry and Justin are just the scapegoats in waiting. When ticket sales fall off, Justin then Jerry will be on the chopping block and ownership will announce that they are going in a "new direction."
Off-season in a nutshell: Ownership won’t expand the budget so front office can’t spend on good free agents. The teams that are accepting prospect packages don’t have any major leaguers of note on their team that the front office wants. The teams that DO have those players don’t won’t prospects, they want your pitchers but Jerry/Justin want a HAUL in return so deals aren’t getting made. So….nothing gets done.
I mean, they're doing exactly what they want them to do. However, as long as Jerry and Justin continue to sign off on the current strategy publicly, they're as culpable as anyone in my eyes. At this point, we need a GM who is going to fight for the resources they need. I couldn't care less about what they feel privately. If they think this is acceptable(as they've suggested publicly), they need to hit the road with John Stanton and co. It won't happen. But it should.
I think Colby was misunderstanding the question when he said “Are they not pitching in T-Mobile Park this year?” The real question is are our starting pitchers that untouchable? Especially some of the guys that we have nearly zero chance of resigning as far as we know. I’ve been thinking what that can write for the past year or two. Not only the stats show a bit of that but also from a few advance stats posted by reporters that I forgot how it’s calculated but it show that they are on the lucky side of the chart
On the NTC, I also think one of the biggest reason is to solely have control of them being sent to a bad team / bad ballpark fit. Nobody would want to be sent to T-Mobile as a hitter if you’re a year or two away from free agency.
Im guessing its about optics. Even if ownership knows behind closed doors they aren't doing their part, they're going to play it as if the front office should be capable of more than what they've accomplished with the resources they have been given. this way they can shift blame elsewhere.
I’ve been complaining all offseason about ownership not spending money and blaming John Stanton. After some research, it turns out Stanton is the “representative” of the ownership group and reports to a board. There is no way to know for sure, but it is speculated that Chris Larson actually has the “power of the purse” with this ownership group. Larson and Stanton are presumed to be the 2 largest stakeholders in this ownership group, I am not sure of ownership percentages.
I wonder if any owners of the 20 other teams with a bigger budget would offer jerry a job? Because they know they can save money with Jerry and can pool a playoff team.
I think that, if Dipoto was actually given the spending money we've heard of (~$16-20 mil), and they go into the season without improving the roster, he should be fired. Note the conditions. I'm not saying it would be all his fault, but he would have failed miserably. It was not impossible to make some things happen with 16 million, a good farm system, and 5 front line starting pitchers. I'm also not saying it's 100% certain he even had $16 million in payroll available. Who really knows? His orders may have been to do all he could to reduce payroll.
Thing is this isn't even an ownership group that cares about public opinion so it might literally take a 80 or 90 loss season for Dipoto to actually get fired. Just a weird situation overall.
Does every member of the M's ownership group have to agree when it comes to spending more? Wondering if it's the entire ownership group that decides the budget?
Check out the Marine Layer podcast interview with David Samson. He talks about this. Usually it's the guy with the highest ownership percentage who makes the decision
The front office can't do what ownership won't let them. Ownership is the problem and nothing will change for the good as long as this group owns the team. I've given up on the Mariners. I have followed them since their first season, but if ownership refuses to care, then I'll spend my time and money elsewhere.
I would be okay if the Mariners took a flier on Spencer Torkelson if it was a deal that didn’t cost much… I think a change of scenery could prove to be beneficial for the guy.
Ahoy guys!!! Colby was towering over Ty with the camera angle 😂 hope you guys have a great day! 😁💛💙

Change? I don't understand the title. The Front Office is doing exactly what Ownership wants, not spend any money.

will the Mariners follow other teams with value menus? $5 beers, hot dogs, popcorn, nachos etc.
Agree with you.. follow the money

John Stanton offseason we can’t get anything outside the dollar menu 🤦♂️🤬😡

I bet dipoto is nervous to trade Castillo. If Casas and Yoshida flopped with us he would be much more likely to get fired
Can you explain what arbitration is in baseball ?

Cuz they have Rivas..
glad to say.....I couldn't care less. While still a Mariner fan.......I have lost most interest.
On Drury. In ‘23, Jurickson Profar was possibly the worst player in baseball.
LOL… You never played baseball, did you?
