- George London sings "Abendlich strahlt der Sonne Auge" from
Das Rheingold by Richard Wagner
Waldemar Kmentt (Froh)
Kirsten Flagstad (Fricka)
Wiener Philharmoniker
Georg Solti, conductor
that high f... i wouldn't mind having it in my ear all the time. like a glorious sounding tinnitus.
George London is my idol in Wagner's Tetralogy. The best Wotan of all times. A genius of imense dramatic power and of superb vocal qualities. Splendid!!!
The best Wotan I have heard. Such consistency and rich sweetness of tone, throughout his range. So musical!
London was probably the greatest interpreter of Wagnerian bass/baritone roles, and this recording of the Solti ""Rheingold" effectively showcases London's artistry. The legendary Wagnerian soprano Kirsten Flagstad(as Fricka) is heard briefly here.
Simply magnificent!
He is just a class for him self. wow.
Sheer Magnificence!!! London was spectacular! The only voice I find at all comparable, dead or alive, would be Ferdinand Frantz!
Great voice!!!!
Vielen Dank !
AWESOME upload, thanks so much!!!!!
Wunderbar! FXR
This is the real deal. Wagner was the guardian of the best and purest kind of art expression.
That is the epitomized Wotan- George London. If Solti had started the Ring project earlier to have London all the time. Kmentt also great.
At least we have the Leinsdorf Walkure :)
@BurnsteinandWarenoff Agreed. I carry a torch for Hotter and like him in Lieder in particular. May it be as is said by many who are old enough to have seen him performing live, that his recordings never displayed his overwhelming stage presents and much better live performances...in the Solti his voice was definitely in decline.
You may know that there is a Walküre with London conducted by Leinsdorf.
Why oh why did he not play Wotan in Die Walkure and Siegfried
Not his picture!
Albert Vaguer yes it is.
The first picture is Kmentt who sings Froh
As good as Pape is, he can't compete with London or Hotter, sorry.
Or Stewart, he was a masterful Wotan, deeply human...London and Hotter on the other hand were powerful with great singing body.
F. Zane Hotter had a darker voice, perfect for Wotan in my opinion. But London was also a powerhouse Wotan.
Norman Bailey was pretty good, too!
Listen to René Pape if you want an equal
You've got to be joking.
@@dashriprock8596 Yes, Colin Dowson must have been joking, Pape a light voice...
