I spotted you having the same issue in this video, so at least I'm not the only one. Lots of bugs for them to work out, but overall it seems like a step in the right direction.

Great video thanks. What does the Base 3 app do for me running my five legacy engines that the Bluetooth app doesn’t? It seems a few more dialogues and water sounds would be available for my five legacy engines and I could build a train if I ever bought a sound dinner car, vision stock car, or caboose but that is about it. Not sure that is worth $420 to me. I have only MTH accessories and switches.
Cool! I just got mine in the mail yesterday! I pre-ordered it years ago and I assumed they cancelled it some time ago after the promised release date came and went a long time ago. I hope they design and release a new controller for it next -- maybe a new modernized version of the Cab2 remote! And I wonder who has more than 99 locomotives... And how can Lionel copyright a color?!?!
I have an Orbi mesh network and it doesn’t have a labeled WPS, but it does have a sync button that I found severs as that function when setting up my Base 3.
Another thought… Base 3.1 should include an Ethernet cable connector. No worries connecting to your household WiFi and no worries sharing radio frequency workload with family WiFi downloading, streaming, etc, but still full network connectivity. 😜
Nicely done. Thank you! One Question: what do us Mac owners do, with regards to the currently Windows-ONLY Utility app? BTW, with all the radios in the Base3, stacking anything on top, is likely bad practice.
Thanks for the awesome video Sean! I’m relatively new to the hobby and have just been buying engines here and there without paying much attention as to the control system they were built for. Long story short, I have a 2004 TMCC engine that I’ve been operating with a simple transformer (Lionel CW-80 80-Watt Transformer). Now that I have the Base 3 and plan to use the Cab 3 app, I’m wondering about two things: (1) now that I’m connecting the Base 3 to the track, do I no longer need the old transformer power the track? (2) am I programming the 2004 TMCC engine using the Base 3/Cab 3 only - I think that’s what I got from the video
No, All Lionel command systems just send signals and have nothing to do with track power, so you still need track power. It should be a constant 18v (doesn't have to be exact but right around 18v). So, you still need a transformer. Yes, you can simply program in your engine with the CAB3 app.
Hey Sean, great video as usual. Thanks for taking the time to explain in detail. I do have 1 question, when using multiple remotes like 2 cab 2 (901-903) or a cab1L and a cab 2, should they be on different channels on the cab 3 or set them all to the same channel? Looking forward to the next segment.
As always, thank you for the break-down instructions,.......but It might be cheaper and less stressful for me to take out the ego-electronics, and replace with the user friendly dcc modules,.... just my opinion 🤔
Sean - I believe one of the benefits of the new base 3 if you are a Cab 1 user, and didn't splash out $$$ for a Cab 2, is that Base 3 in combination with the Cab 3 App, will open up all the full capabilities of legacy engines (like Acela and the Big Boy) through the Aux keys, that Cab 1 users couldn't access before. Do you agree?
I'm new to any Legacy i just had a old transformer as a kid so please do a video with the cab 1L remote with the base 3 cause I think the remote will be alot easier 4 me to operate ive been buying new engines but just laying track have no remotes yet never had a engine that made noises lol just getting back into the hobby so please do sum videos with the new CAB 1 L remote for us older guys that don't want the confusing app we rather use the simpler remote so pretty please do a video with the remote 4 us older generation
Chain up modules. Do you mean Daisy Chain the LCS modules? If so, each module has 2 PDI ports on them. You simply connect them together with PDI cables using the ports. Incoming cable goes to one port and outgoing cable to the other until you have them all strung together. Does not matter which port on the module you use as is in or out. then finally one cable plugs into back of Base 3 into 1 of the 3 PDI ports.
@@seanstraindepot Thank you! I wish that they had a physical manual. I was able to figure out most of what my base 1L can do by looking at the physical manual.
@@johnturcsik2906 HAHA, I totally agree. I love detailed manuals. Always been a big fan of them, but people today have so little patience, manufacturers are like, "why waste time and money when people don't read it".
@@seanstraindepot I rather read the big manual lol. I have multiple manuals, but I found one that’s talking about mashups and different manual for a different item but explains mashup more in details
@@seanstraindepot well if you think about it gets the last laugh because people are frustrated because they can’t figure out how certain things work on the base3.
Sean, you do such a great job on your videos on how everything works! Lionel should hire you to do instructional videos. Great job my friend 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 I’m still not sure if I’m buying Cab 3. I still like using my Cab 2 System
No, it is separate and the only remote New that Lionel sells is the Blue CAB1-L. The legacy (gray) remote I showed has to be purchased on the secondary market if you want one of those types.
Hey Sean, the pairing of the LionChief was pretty straightforward but I’ve been unable to connect a LionChief + 2.0. I don’t have previous legacy systems. Do you know what the process is to connect a LC + 2.0 engine to the Base3?
Based on what Sean covered, it doesn't sound like the function of the Sensor Track really changes with Base-3. The Sensor Track became the easiest (or at least most convenient) way to program an engines' detailed information somewhat quickly when Lionel stopped supplying Orange modules with new engines. All of that info could have been (and presumably still can be) entered manually via either CAB-2/CAB-1L or the app (though it is much slower to enter everything manually). If you meant to transfer the info from an old Legacy Base, that was the part he was covering with the Black module that will (hopefully) become easier to do bulk transfers of multiple engines once the Base-3 Utility program is available sometime in September.
What he said, lol. So yes, sensor track works same with Base3 and make it easy. But you can manually do it too. I go over it in Part 2 of the video series.
Sean, I have two independent loops. The base 3 only will work on one loop. I believe I connected it to black terminal on the output of my MTH TIU on both loops via fixed 1 and 2 outputs. Any ideas for what is wrong?
@@seanstraindepotshould I connect to the black side of the power distribution panel instead of the black output terminal on the TIU? They are both grounded I would think
@@pingkirsch1380 The DCS system is bi-directional, so it uses both rails (one signal in each direction), whereas Legacy is not and uses outer rail in one direction. I would try and connect your legacy signal directly to the distribution block outer rail, not anywhere on the TIU. It's not about ground it's about a clean signal. The base3 output needs to be connected to both loops, or the second loop won't have any signal. If the 2 loops have separate power supplies be careful, they are in phase.
I use the new mesh systems, which are pretty much the new standard instead of a single router. Mine happens to be TPLink's, but I have had NexGear's Orbi system too. Regardless of system you should be able to get it to connect to your router. Did you try to follow the manual setup instead of the automated WPS setup? Control.Lionel.com has instructions now.
No, you cannot control MTH engines with Lionel's system, never could. You can only control Lionel engines with MTH's system by using the SER Module. Same as before.
Hello Sean. Is it possible to purchase one of those four position LionChief remote holders? I will gladly pay for all your expenses. It will work perfectly on my layout. Thanks. TJH
I tried to trigger the n&w class a safety valves by holding down auxiliary 3 but that triggered the action record. How do I trigger the safety valves instead?
-Hi Sean, I have a S gauge legacy rail sounds U33C diesel locomotive engine that I’m not really sure how to register/program to the base 3. If I set the engine to program and set it on the tracks, the lights come on and the engine sounds start on their own. I am using the lionChief track power that plugs directly from track to wall outlet from a LionChief set. Do I need a an actual Lionel transformer like the GW-180 to use the legacy rail sounds U33C diesel locomotive with the base 3? Thanks
Question: I have my base 2 run through a Lionel TPC300 using the big data plug and cord that plugs into the back of the base 2. This way I can set the TPC to command and run all my TMCC and Legacy engines, or change it to conventional and run all my older conventional engines, all on the same track with my Cab2 (just not at the same time). The Base 3 has no data plug. Do you know of any way to use the Base 3 to run conventional engines?
Hi Sean, I have the cab 3 app but not the base 3 and I heard I need a computer, I do t have a computer, if I get the base 3 could I set up the base 3 without a computer?
Hi Sean, when using the cab 3 app with a Legacy Engine, what lights should flash? Mine is flashing red and green, and the engine will not move. Any help is appreciated.
Green is for Wi-Fi activity from your device to the Base3. So, every tap would send a command, and it will blink Green. Red would only be for Lionchief RF activity. I think you have your engine programmed wrong. Possibly you have the RF switch in wrong position when you programmed it? A Legacy engine will not respond if programmed as an RF engine. control.lionel.com/docs/base3-indication-lights/
@@seanstraindepot the buttons on the right are set at AP, Bluetooth Run, and RF Run. I think I either have to reboot the Base3, if possible, or call Lionel support at this point. Thanks for responding!
@@Glenn_Mead Its not the switch position I was after, but did you program in your Legacy engine as an RF engine, because that won't work. If you download the Base3 system Utility, you can connect to the base and see exactly how you have the engine programmed. Or just try and reprogram the engine. My guess is it is not programmed correctly if it does not move or respond.
@@seanstraindepot I downloaded the B3SU, and there are no RF nor bt engines. I cleared the 4014, reprogrammed it, and still flashes both green and red lights whenever I send a command.
sean, another issue with these apps. it seams if you are going to be on the lionel access point network to use the lionel cab3 app. then you have to disconnect to the lionel network and connect to the mth access point on the wiu. to be able to run dcs engines through thier app. guess if you had two phones or tablets they would each be connect to thier respective control unit. this makes using one remote to control all your engines non relevant again. that seems at least to me the only down side to these apps.
If you don't use access point and use your home network for both, then you can use one device (although its 2 apps). But if using access point then you are correct.
The process is the same as it was with the TMCC base, or Base1-L. Put engine switch in program mode, press eng, type in number, press set button. That process has not changed.
@@daivdwalker2374I feel this comment deeply. I just order the base 3. Hopefully it’ll be here this Friday. I’m hoping I can set a tmcc engine on the track and it will just show up in the app
Good presentation. One other thing to lok at is the TR function on this app. I and others can not get the app to control the power output on a ZW-L. Probably same problem with ZW-C. Another thing for you to show is how to easily (if it is easy) switch from one loco to another. Personally I'm very disappointed with this unit and the app. The CAB2 remote is a far superior control to operate trains than the CAB3 app in my opinion. If you make a fat finger mistake bad things can happen.
I’m trying to use system and it says no base unit available make sure the Cab3 has permission to connect to local Internet. No offense, but I got mad and when I was trying to fix the issue, I ended up breaking the stupid antenna I emailed Lionel and told them that their system is not compatible with my Internet and I have to go downtown to my storage facility and get the one remote that it will connect to which is my cab-1L remote
Thats too bad. The Antenna is only used if you are using one of the handheld remotes. So, you can still use the Cab3 app. There are 2 ways to connect to your wi-fi (Access Point, Home Network). Try Access point first. Flip the switch on the front to AP, then open your phones wi-fi settings and select the wi-fi network with Base 3 in the name to connect to it.
@@seanstraindepot OK cool thank you for telling me how to connect it on the app. That too I was trying to figure it out but the instructions are not really clear on the Quickstart guide

Hello, I am new to the hobby and the Base3 and I thought maybe I could ask here a question that somebody would be kind to answer: I have a Lionel Legacy engine and it does not want to connect to the Base3 (I am using Cab3 App). I DO NOT have a wired connection though from the Base3 to the transformer /track - is that wire necessary for this to work?
@@seanstraindepot Thank you for your reply! I am still trying to figure out stuff. As I understand I just need to get any electrical wire and connect it to Base3's binding post and to the ground post od my transformer. I'll do that. Again, thank you.

I e mailed Lionel, but they just sent me to the web page and those instructions don't seem to work for me, unless I am doing something wrong. Not sure what to do next. I also was able to connect the Cab 2 remote to the base 3 successfully. my Base 3 shipped with using channel 1 on my Cab 2 was already on channel 1 so that worked out well, it's just the Wi-Fi connection that's giving me trouble and like you said the brake function on the phone app isn't working. I really appreciate you taking the time to respond to my comment.
@@seanstraindepot new update, 7-30-24 9:45pm, Good News, I got it to work, I re-read the instructions again, this time it had me set it up using the Base 3 app on the iPhone, and now it works. I like the Wi-Fi better because I don't have to switch networks on my iPhone each time that I use the app, I can just keep my phone on my home Wi-Fi network. Thanks for your help,
Speaking of switch, I have an idea of a 3 way switch to control the background sounds. 0=off 1=day time sounds 2=night time sounds And what if you get a sound to tell you what sound mode you are on? Like if you shift to day time sounds, you'll be greeted by the sound of a rooster crowing and then the sound kicks on. And when you shift to night time sounds, you'll be greeted by the sound of an owl hoot. What do you think of this?
Maybe after watching your video, I won't throw the new base in the trash. Two hours of Base Three fun...not. Keeps crashing on the Apple Ipad and will not properly load engines especially the Bluetooth Lionchief 2.0's. I've just spend two hours with no success. Poor instructions and no manual from Lionel. Speed bar flickers and get out of control and have to run to the transformer to shut the track down. App crashes constantly and will not stay connected to the wifi. You have to use the local area network only to connect. WIFI does not configure. This is so poorly made and designed with too many bugs. Very disappointed. You cannot safely switch from train to train in time to control them...that is if they connect at all and the app doesn't crash on you. So unreliable. I would not trust my investment running 5 locomotives on three tracks with this thing.
Hi, sorry my schedule is so packed with full time work and everything else I unfortunately can't help individual's setup their systems. But All the Base 3 videos will show almost everything. The initial setup is just connecting 1 wire to the outside rail or U post of your transformer and downloading the app, then setting up Wi-Fi. Go to control.lionel.com and they have it separated out into nice sections (setup, app, wifi, etc.). Or just go ahead and ask questions here and multiple people can help answer them. Thanks!

Are there any good videos that show how to lash up or do you have any for cab3 app and base 3. And how to get the engines in the roster
I showed how to do a lash-up in Part 3 of this video series.
@ thanks
Do you have a part where it shows me how to set up and chain up modules with the base3

You don't get much more with the Base3 (a few things) and if your Legacy system is working fine, I would pass for now.
Copy Sean's complete engine roster to Base 3? We're going to need a bigger flash drive!
Does the remote come with the base 3? Subscribed!

Part 2 video is coming tonight on the Cab3 app, but LC+ 2.0 have BT & Legacy radios so you could use either side of the app.

Lol no.
So a sensor track is needed for the engine to transfer all information to the Base 3 control system ?
@@dave_7235 ty for the additional information very helpful !

Why are you connecting it to the Tiu? Probably interfering the signal with the DCS signal.
What router are you using? I have trouble connecting to my router and looking to upgrade.
If you use a SER2 interface can you pull up a MTH DCS engine using the Lionel system or do you need to have a Mth Wi-Fi box for the TIU
No, you cannot control MTH engines with Lionel's system, never could. You can only control Lionel engines with MTH's system by using the SER Module. Same as before.
@@seanstraindepot will Mth z at system allow you to control the base 3 an all it’s features

Hi Sean. Can you tell me where you got ther orange LionChiel remote holder. Thanks
HAHA, I 3D printed them myself.

I tried to trigger the n&w class a safety valves by holding down auxiliary 3 but that triggered the action record. How do I trigger the safety valves instead?
Aux 3 should work if you have the correct engine programmed. It has to know it's the Class A.

Thanks
Did you connect the base3 to the track outer rail? Sounds like it is not getting a legacy signal if it powers right up. Should be silent.
I got it sorted, than you for the help and great videos.
It’s in the Part 4 video. You need to get the SER module.
Shawn, do you know how many engines can be stored into the base 3? I know the base two only supports up to 99 engines.
That is a good question. I did not see that mentioned in the documentation anywhere. Don't know if it's the same or holds more.
How do you trigger classification lights on legacy steamers with the cab 3 app?
You must Use the Aux2 key to get to the lighting menu. Hold the Aux key down for 2 secs. A quick tap won't bring up the menu.
@seanstraindepot thanks
@seanstraindepot Your talking about the cab 3 app? Right? Just making sure.
Hi Sean, I have the cab 3 app but not the base 3 and I heard I need a computer, I do t have a computer, if I get the base 3 could I set up the base 3 without a computer?
Absolutely. A computer is not required. As a matter of fact, you can do all your updates from your phone to the Base now.
@@Glenn_Mead That one is a mystery. What is the engine product number?
sean, another issue with these apps. it seams if you are going to be on the lionel access point network to use the lionel cab3 app. then you have to disconnect to the lionel network and connect to the mth access point on the wiu. to be able to run dcs engines through thier app.
guess if you had two phones or tablets they would each be connect to thier respective control unit. this makes using one remote to control all your engines non relevant again. that seems at least to me the only down side to these apps.
If you don't use access point and use your home network for both, then you can use one device (although its 2 apps). But if using access point then you are correct.
@seanstraindepot thanks sean, thats what I thought. cant wait for part two. you are very good at explaining complex stuff in your videos. thanks.
How do you program engines into the new base 3 with the new CAB 1 L controller
The process is the same as it was with the TMCC base, or Base1-L. Put engine switch in program mode, press eng, type in number, press set button. That process has not changed.
@seanstraindepot I've only owned a transformer so I don't know anything about these
@@daivdwalker2374I feel this comment deeply. I just order the base 3. Hopefully it’ll be here this Friday. I’m hoping I can set a tmcc engine on the track and it will just show up in the app
I am trying to connect my base 3 to my app how do I do this. Also my router doesn’t have WPS button am I out of luck?
No, just follow the instruction on the website (control.lionel.com) under the Wi-Fi setup section for No WPS.
The Hardware is very good. It's just the app needs work.
I’m trying to use system and it says no base unit available make sure the Cab3 has permission to connect to local Internet. No offense, but I got mad and when I was trying to fix the issue, I ended up breaking the stupid antenna
I emailed Lionel and told them that their system is not compatible with my Internet and I have to go downtown to my storage facility and get the one remote that it will connect to which is my cab-1L remote

Yes, you do, or no signal can get to the engine. You have to program the engine too.

You don’t have to have a WPS button, it’s just more convenient. You can do it manually, Lionel has it out on their website Control.lionel.com

How much is this system
About 450.00 depending where you get it.
Sheesh Lionel could have at least put type C usb
Is it just me or do I hear birdies singing in the background??
A little curious though.
Nice layout though.
Thats the layout. It has background sounds when it's powered up, lol. I need to put in a switch to turn that off when doing videos. lol.
Speaking of switch, I have an idea of a 3 way switch to control the background sounds.
0=off
1=day time sounds
2=night time sounds
And what if you get a sound to tell you what sound mode you are on?
Like if you shift to day time sounds, you'll be greeted by the sound of a rooster crowing and then the sound kicks on.
And when you shift to night time sounds, you'll be greeted by the sound of an owl hoot.
What do you think of this?
Sorry but Lionel does not have an updated remote for this system. Big fail.
Maybe in the future. It was hinted at in one of Lionel's videos.
Great video. IMHO the Base 3 seems kind of junkie and not well thought out.
The hardware I think is solid, but the app will need some work.
Fail without a new remote.
Who knows what will happen in future. But it does have a remote available to use now. The CAB1-L which they make to go with it.
Definitely some bugs but I have not experienced that extreme stuff like you have.
Is there anyway you can contact me? I’m new to this thanks JB.
