Im glad I found this. I am planning a trip to Thailand later this year. Now you got me worried about my prescription meds. No controled substances. When you say I must bring the Dr's prescription does the medicine bottle not count? I don't know how many years its been since I have actually seen a prescription. They are always just called in to the pharmacy. Do I need to get paper prescriptions written from my Doctor?
The prescription is technically a requirement but you can always chance it... when it comes to prescriptions that aren't restricted, it normally won't cause any significant problems. It's mostly opioids that can cause issues. That being said, a paper script is normally a requirement for most countries so it can be worth having a copy.
@@thebangkokguide Thanks for the reply. I just looked this up on the Thai consulate site. It said that if not controlled or Opiod, and no more than 30 days worth that I didn't need to go to the red line.
Even if you did get a paper prescription you would need to turn it in at the pharmacy. For all intents and purposes the label on medication vials should serve as the prescription.
That's correct. You can skip the red channel. The script is only if they decide to check your bags. If you happened to get checked, you should be okay with just the bottle. It's not overly strict with standard meds. Cheers!
Question: I have some prescriptions that I intend to carry, no narcotics. You said in the "original packaging (bottles) AND the prescription." So this means that I can't put them in a 2-week pill sorter and pack it?
Technically they are supposed to be in the original packaging with the prescription. Can always chance it as officers aren’t overly strict for most standard medications (and often don’t check). But technically it should be in original packaging.
@@thebangkokguide So just to clarify, original bottles and do I need to get the script too in paper form? I can get it, no problem, but one thing that drives me nuts is not having everything I need for customs. And do I need to declare them on an entry form? I had to when I went to Palau last year, they didn't even want to see the paperwork but I was prepared. I'm not a novice traveler but sometimes the nuances between countries can be problematic.
@ Technically you need the original packaging and script. There is no entry form and no need to declare the meds unless it’s opioid or opioid derivatives (which require the Thai FDA permit). There are no checks unless the customs officer decides to randomly X-ray or search your bags.
@@thebangkokguide Got it. Very helpful and thank you. I subscribed and am going to watch your other videos. My dad was stationed at U-Tapau during the Vietnam war so I'm looking forward to see that area even though it's changed a lot. Thanks again!
hey cal! thx for this video. not sure if you know or not but is ativan allowed with no embassy permission? im getting conflicting informations. maybe you hear anything regarding it? (its precscription from my dr).
Ativan is a benzodiazepine (psychotropic category 2 drug), and you are permitted to bring up to a 30 day supply with you. Bring it in original packaging with your prescription. For a full breakdown you should watch my video about prescription drugs specifically: ruclips.net/video/07iqXANS-UY/видео.htmlsi=9qP3xmPSDsQim_-m
Most States in the US do not have written prescriptions for drugs. All RXs must be sent electronically to the pharmacy. Most doctors I know do not even have a prescription pad. Lol😂
Can you get a copy sent to you if you tell them that you plan to travel? It's fairly standard to bring the prescription with medication to almost any country around the world.
@@thebangkokguide Generally, if the medicine is in the prescription bottle it's accepted in leu of a hard copy prescription. The bottle, in essence, has the prescription written on the bottle's label.
@@aquicktake It should be alright. The guidelines specify a written prescription, so I don’t want to risk causing anyone a problem by telling them that it will definitely work with only the packaging. But it should be fine.
Its not a states thing, its a doctor thing, some doctors send it electronically and some including walk in clinics dont, they might type it out for you...either way, it will always be on the actual medicine itself
I work in medical in the U.S. Yes, doctors can still write you a written Rx. We now use a special Rx watermarked copy paper, print out the Rx. Done. If your doctor office can't do it, ask the pharmacy to see if they can print the electronic one for you.
I remember Thai Airways gave me an apple as I left the plane. Customs confiscated it. They also gave out playing cards with the thai airways logo. Also illegal.
Sounds about right lol. The playing cards one is actually taken very seriously and I should have included it. A few years back the police raided pensioner bridge games in a big show of force.
Actually I should have picked a different image. You can bring in coffee or tea for personal use. Think I'll add a blur to that visual as it is definitely confusing!
Brought a couple of kilos of my ground coffee for years in with no problem. I assume it is about synthesised or concentrated coffeine semi products in Thai law which is quite logical just the way other legal systems in the world regard it. Pharmaceutical coffeine pills for personal use in a sound quantity should not be an issue at all. Especially if a doc's prescription comes along.
You forgot any books that criticize the Royal Family. Books like The King Never Smiles. Don't even think of bringing that book or any controversial political book through Thai customs.
That's a good add. Might be the biggest mistake of all. Working on a video about Thai laws and I'll make sure to add this there, as it's important. Thanks for your input.

You can purchase any non-narcotic drug in a pharmacy with no hassles. Certain drugs, like gabapentin, are not in every pharmacy, but the large pharmacies near hospitals have everything.
I agree. It’s quite a limited duration. As the previous commenter mentioned, you can buy most non narcotic drugs here very easily and often at cheaper prices due to a large generic drug industry. Cheers
All good. Shouldn't have any problems. Can buy over the counter here as well... just walk into any non-chain pharmacy between Asok and Nana on Sukhumvit.
I bought a long wooden souvenir shoe horn to take home, and I had it sticking out of my carry on suitcase when i was checking in for my flight. The agent didn't like it being carried on, and took it away from me. They did put it in a travel tube and i did manage to get it back when I arrived at my home airport, with a bit of hassle. Who knew. ?🤪
They're not strict with vapes it seems. I brought one with me 2 years ago no problems. My friend brought one in as well, vaping everywhere not realising they were illegal til I told him. He was shocked 😂. Stupid law tbh. 250 grams of tobacco is fine as that's what they sell them in multi-packs of at the airport. I'm back in Thailand 21st January. My dad's lived there 20 years so I've been a few times! Your videos are informative. 👍🏻
Thanks for the kind words. I agree on the vapes. It’s a strange law given just how widespread it is here… and I don’t think they stop anyone from bringing a personal use vape either. A lot of customs enforcement is pretty haphazard and vapes is probably top of the list! Thanks for your input.
That's a solid record. I think they tend to focus on larger bags and parcels. I travel light and only ever checked once in 9 years when had more bags with me. Cheers
You should be okay with just the two... just pack them so that they clearly appear as personal goods rather than in any boxes which could have a resale appearance.
Yes, it's okay but make sure it's under 5kg to stay within the personal use limit... actually the image for caffeine should have been caffeine powder or specifically. Interestingly, Tim Horton's has become very popular here! They are everywhere now.

And i also think it would be a good idea to put a "please be discrete sticker" to the box, in case i get searched and the danger of ruining the surprise ^^ Thanks a lot and have a nice day!
Yeah but it’s actually caffeine powder or pills. In retrospect, the tea image is not ideal! You can bring in coffee or tea in smaller quantities for personal use.
what have the fake bags when buying in thailand and take them with you to your home country to do with the title here: NEVER Bring These Items into THAILAND ?
This video has cause many people on medications anxiety about bringing medications into Thailand. I bet you do this to get views and many comments. you should explain properly at the beginning.
Actually the video is intended to answer any questions about bringing medications that have come up in other videos. I have a whole other video that goes much further into medications, and I think that I'm basically the only channel that has really done all the research to explain the pharmaceutical laws and the nuances around them.
Good video , but what about items made of wood ? Most countries have laws against bringing wooden items due to the possibility of there being invasive bugs inside it . Canada has this regulation as well as Australia , although you can have the wooden items treated with radiation for a fee . Years back I hade a wooden replica of my aunties house ( 91 cm long assembled ), and would like to disassemble it and bring it to Thailand when I finally move there
Thanks for the kind words. I believe that the replica would fall under the antique restriction that needs a ministry of commerce license. Anything that may be considered an antique or artifact falls into restricted categories. Bringing in timber directly would also require a license for the reason you mentioned.
@@thebangkokguide I built the replica in... hmm. I think it was 1990 . Ill send my wife some pics of it so she can show the ministry of commerce . Thank you for all the helpful information .
Second question. You seem to have done your research in this area but here is something i bet you cannot answer . I have a kit car. Its a 7/8 th scale replica of a 1936 Mercedes Benz 500 k Roadster . . I bought it in disassembled kit form from Classic Roadsters in Fargo ND . It came across the boarder as " car parts " but the company also furnished it with a serial number. I built it in 1991 with a 302 ford v8 and gave it to my parents. They drove it from time to time with politicians in parades or taking residents of local senior citizen homes for rides. . A few years back they gifted it back to me . Here's what I want to do. I would like to completely disassemble it and box up all the parts ( with its custom frame ) MINUS the engine , transmission and rear axel , and ship it to Thailand , where I would re assemble it with the engine , trans and rear end from a Mercedes SL series car that I would purchase in Thailand . ( perhaps even cutting and stretching it into a 4 door configuration ). Then we could take my disabled father in law and mum for drives in the countryside . My thai wife already tried once talking with customs with regard to bringing the dissembled parts into Thailand. She will try again if she makes a trip down to Bangkok. as this is better discussed in person . Don't feel bad if you have no answer for this. haha Its not something that's dome everyday I guess. Cheers and Happy new years
Sounds like a great project. I’m not entirely familiar with importing cars, but normally the tariffs are quite high… you’ll want to go through a customs broker for something like that as you risk it getting stuck in customs with demands for absurdly high tariffs. You really need the broker who has connections that will arrange it all. Cheers and good luck with the project!
@@thebangkokguide For sure on that. Since it was not a " production car" it cannot even come into the kingdom as " a car ". The only way is in disassembled " car parts " . I have read cars and motorcycles can be subject to up to 200 % duties. That's very disheartening because I have several vehicles here in Canada that I would like to ship to Thailand . Take for example.. I just bought a 1971 Honda SL 350 in " barn find " condition . If I were to ship it " as is " to Thailand the duty on its present condition ( rough , seized aged ) would be around 600 $ but if i restore it first , here in Canada , its value would increase to around 6500 $ making it subject to much much higher duties .. If I were to be like most retirees , moving there ... going to the bars every night , and living it a tiny house or apartment , life would be simple ... But on many things , I have hit a brick wall . Just not do able in Thailand
@@ethics3Yeah I definitely understand you there. Was back in Canada in August. Really enjoyed working on building and salvaging projects that just aren’t possible here. The car culture is entirely different. I’ve got my creative outlet in RUclips here, but I miss that aspect of life in Canada. I’d like to split my time a little bit more as I think that can offer the best of both worlds.
I found a nice electric wheel chair on shoppee that's around 1000 $ for my father in law... Ill have my wife see if there is a big duty applicable to it should she buy it ( comes from china ). Thanks for the heads up
Do you plan to bring it with you or have it shipped? If it's shipped, you'll likely pay customs duties. Shipping is the main target of customs enforcement. Cheers
@@thebangkokguide She would be ordering it on shoppee , so it would be shipped to her door . As far as me bringing a wheelchair from Canada , that would never happen. Any items / products sold in Canada that are focused towards the elderly / physically challenged are hugely over priced . I was the primary care giver for my mum for 3 years when she was fighting leukemia and then afterword's , for her 2 elderly sisters for 5 years until they , as well , passed away . In that time I was shocked at how the elderly and physically challenged are gouged . A walk in tub might cost over 5000 $ in Canada but the same model sold in Lima Peru was 1300 dollars . Non electric wheelchairs in Canada start at around 350 for the most basic where as in Thailand you can order one for as little as 39 $ .

@@thebangkokguide it should not be valproic acid and even that one should be fine as long as it dosent exceed 30 days. But should i get a prescription with be just to be safe?😊
The Buddha statue requirement is to ensure what you bring out is not 'real' Buddha artifact. So those souvenir statues are fine.
That makes sense. Thanks for your input!
Yes you are right . The authorities are worried you bring out a real antique buddha head.

@Cal, what about tinctures like Moringa/Clove and Oregano/ Ashwaganda, etc.
No restrictions on these products as long as its personal use. Cheers!
hey cal! thx for this video. not sure if you know or not but is ativan allowed with no embassy permission? im getting conflicting informations. maybe you hear anything regarding it? (its precscription from my dr).
Ativan is a benzodiazepine (psychotropic category 2 drug), and you are permitted to bring up to a 30 day supply with you. Bring it in original packaging with your prescription. For a full breakdown you should watch my video about prescription drugs specifically:

@@SS-fi4oo I’m glad it’s helpful. Cheers
Helpful video 😊 thanks for sharing

Great info brother. I frequent Bangkok, sometimes Pattaya. I want to live there because I like the people,
Great place to live! Cheers!
Can I bring excedrin?
Should be alright. Has caffeine but low dose. Doubt you’d encounter any issues.
@@thebangkokguide I remember that case...
Ok, Damn!!! Personal reminder ; “DONT pack the baby elephant” 😅😂
Very important!
caffeine such as bringing coffee or tea is restricted?
Actually I should have picked a different image. You can bring in coffee or tea for personal use. Think I'll add a blur to that visual as it is definitely confusing!
Brought a couple of kilos of my ground coffee for years in with no problem. I assume it is about synthesised or concentrated coffeine semi products in Thai law which is quite logical just the way other legal systems in the world regard it. Pharmaceutical coffeine pills for personal use in a sound quantity should not be an issue at all. Especially if a doc's prescription comes along.
What about a buck knife model 110 folding camping knife in checked in baggage is this OK?
Should be fine in checked bags. Cheers
@ thank you very much. Hope to do some camping in Chiang Mai.
This is good to know. I was bringing coffee because last year I was getting sick of insta coffee.
You can bring coffee for personal use.. it’s actually synthetic caffeine that is restricted!

Did you say caffeine? Is tea allowed?
Tea and coffee for personal use up to 5kg is allowed. Caffeine refers to the supplement or powder form.
Are eye drops allowed into Thailand without the doctor's prescription?

You forgot any books that criticize the Royal Family. Books like The King Never Smiles. Don't even think of bringing that book or any controversial political book through Thai customs.

True. Although brand name products can be more expensive due to higher import tariffs here.

Hi Cal Happy new year I take life long medication and can’t go a day really without it iam thinking off coming too Thailand maybe April time does Thailand operate like uk drug stores there’s no substitute for what iam taken just now the maximum time I could be coming for is two months is there a extension you could get for bringing 60 days medication with me just in case I couldn’t find them when travelling or does it thailand supply and will order it in if they don’t stock what I need even in Kent where iam living I have too order 60 at a time because suppliers run out then I put in a early order too make sure my supply is covered thanks love ur videos they cover all the angels iam looking for cheers
If the medication isn’t an opioid you should generally be fine bringing a 60 day supply as well. Just bring the prescription and original packaging. Enforcement isn’t overly strict for most prescription drugs (most are available over the counter here)… it’s really just for opioids, and even then the FDA online form is very easy to fill out. Happy new year!
@ Yes no opioid and I’ve heard medicine should be easy too get out in Thailand if Had a problem it’s always worth bringing my own just too make sure because wee have problems here in uk getting it thanks for getting back have a great day look forward too watching more off ur lovely videos cheers Cal 👍

Good info! Only 30 days worth of prescription meds could be problematic…..
You can purchase any non-narcotic drug in a pharmacy with no hassles. Certain drugs, like gabapentin, are not in every pharmacy, but the large pharmacies near hospitals have everything.
@ That’s good to know. Thanks!
I agree. It’s quite a limited duration. As the previous commenter mentioned, you can buy most non narcotic drugs here very easily and often at cheaper prices due to a large generic drug industry. Cheers
Can you bring blue chew ED meds..... asking for a friend?
Who knew. ?🤪
I wonder if it was because of the wood or a perception that it’s a weapon. Thanks for sharing!
@thebangkokguide yes, cannabis legal and vapes illegal. Makes perfect sense! 😂
After you live here long enough you just stop bothering to question the logic lol
45 years flying into Thailand in BKK and only once ever had to have my bag x-rayed.
That's a solid record. I think they tend to focus on larger bags and parcels. I travel light and only ever checked once in 9 years when had more bags with me. Cheers

I am moving to Bangkok this month. I have 2 Rolex watches. I plan to bring them there. I wonder if that can be a problem 😳
You should be okay with just the two... just pack them so that they clearly appear as personal goods rather than in any boxes which could have a resale appearance.
Thank you for your answer…
The right pronunciation of the airport is swarnaa- BHUmie. Two separate words
Thanks for the tip! I've mostly heard the pronunciation without the ie at the end, including on the Airport Rail Link.

Cal. Can we Canadians bring tins of Tims coffee in?
Yes, it's okay but make sure it's under 5kg to stay within the personal use limit... actually the image for caffeine should have been caffeine powder or specifically. Interestingly, Tim Horton's has become very popular here! They are everywhere now.
Wow, thailand is much less free than advertised.
It’s pretty similar to most countries around the world in terms of prohibited or restricted goods.
What of alcohol 🍸?
I liter of spirits or wine.

Hi! Thanks a lot for your Information! I was afraid at first to bring my engaging ring that i have just bought for my girlfriend. The Price is about 25'000 BHT.
But you think I should be fine with it, even tough i bring it in the ring-box? Because obviously i plan to propose to her during our travel in thailand. Just walk trough the green channel?
I will take my receipt with me, and a certificate of proof from the jewellry shop, that it is not a fake ring. And i also think it would be a good idea to put a "please be discrete sticker" to the box, in case i get searched and the danger of ruining the surprise ^^

You seem to be making the same videos over and over.
Maybe time to Travel a bit
I haven’t made a video about customs before…. Actually I made it based on comments and questions I received on another popular video. Anyway all good
Good video , but what about items made of wood ?
Don't feel bad if you have no answer for this. haha
Its not something that's dome everyday I guess.
