I had the privilege of running into Star on a Midwestern tour in my first year in drum corps as I was in a small corps from Missouri. During that time one of the championships was in Dekalb, Il. We performed and afterwards took seats in the stands. After Star's performance the drum major sat next to me with all of her regalia. I was sooo giddy!!!!! I was a fan for life!!!! Even though I was a horn captain, soloist and 1st soprano in my own hornline I was like a 2 year old babe watching and following Star and witnessing their professionalism. Back then few corps beat Star so I was certainly looking up to their organization. Brilliant corps and performance. I love them. ⭐
When I heard and saw this show on Friday night, I turned to my best friend and Said "I think I've just seen the best drum corps show I've ever seen". At that time I had been going to shows for over 30 years.
Wow! Thanks for that. I'm actually regaining an appreciate for my own show. It was SO different from other Drum Corp shows, and I was so immersed in it - that it was hard for me to be a "fan." Over the years, I actually enjoyed watching Cadets '90 show more than Star.
I remember standing on the track at DCI South in 90 and being shaken to my core by immensity of the sound coming from that horn line. I was cheering, literally yelling at the top of my lungs, and unable to hear myself. To this day, decades later, still one of the loudest things I've ever heard. It was simply gargantuan and wonderfully beautiful. In my 50+ years of life adventures, I've never experienced anything else like it before or since.
"Minor problems not worth talking about." Perfectly said! Man, this show just never gets old - I pick up something I missed every time. This was one of those shows back in the day where I looked forward to seeing it every time, unlike most shows (especially these days) where it's like, okay, once is enough. Thanks so much for putting this together!
08:34 The Zingali comment about staging so the voices cut and balance properly is a comment you won't hear on modern drum corps tape. Simple reasons. 1) drill isn't written this way anymore. Staging and field placement meant something very different then compared to now. 2) There is no longer a reward for it because it's not emphasized on the sheets this way.
more specifically, live eq, equalization, is applied electronically to the whole brass section, not just soloists. the issue of the voices being clear, coming through, balance etc, is now being fixed live by someone on a laptop, not just the skill of the brass player anymore.
Thank you so much for posting. We hear drum tapes all the time and I've actually asked for the brass tapes of this show in the comments on other videos. I saw you guys in Houston that year. My first show and exposure to DCI. My band director kept saying each performance will be the best thing you've ever seen. And they kept getting better and better and then Star came out and I was gobsmacked. This show changed my life and is the reason I matched drum corps...and is the reason I chose Star. I just feel like I watched a video of a long list friend when they were so young and promising. Tears. The nostalgia. Thanks to everybody who was a part of this show.
I was lucky enough to go to dci 90 in Buffalo and see this. It was a brilliant finals weekend. I played this piece by Walton already from youth orchestra and it was a nightmare...testimony to Star...amazing and sadly missed..one of a kind...RIP Bill Cook
This was perfectly compiled. I've always loved this show -- I think even more than the '91 championship. This should've won. Thank you so much for sharing this video! Andy Lalor Black Knights 1988-1990 (snare) Mirage 1993 (Drum Major)
@@renorailfanning5465 Oh, don't get me wrong, I loved the '91 show as well, but '90 was absolutely amazing. Perhaps they could've pulled off back-to-back Championships. '90 was so much better than the Cadets and (dare I say it?) the Cavaliers.
@@andylalor225 Thanks for saying so. I've heard others say if we had one more week we would have won. Even though I marched this show, I absolutely LOVE Cadets from '90. They were just so visually clean. I can't argue with their win. Also, while this may not be fully understood by a lot of people - Star really came together perfectly on finals night. I've watched our Friday night show and it was fairly flat. We literally played out of our minds the night of finals and fed off the crowd. It was the perfect storm for us.
A L, it's interesting U say that. I matched Star. I got a SCV buddy that swears there's a bunch of Corps/Shows that actually should've Won the year B4 they Won. I heard Dan Potter on a '91 Star 'Run it Back', & This Star staff mentioned they couldn't have Won in '91 without the Star Corps And Show of 1990
I can’t tell you how much I enjoyed this! When I saw Deron and Star perform this at DCI Mid America in Bloomington, I knew right then and there that I was going to march drum corps. By far my all-time favorite show.
I thank you so very much for uploading this. Hearing the reactions from the brass judges is so incredibly gratifying. Musically, this show was incredibly difficult, and when the drill is thrown in there, doubly so. I enjoyed the heck outta this. And this is coming from a former snare drummer.
Star pushed what was possible with a hornline, just like Crown did in the modern era. Not to discredit the other great corps or their writers but sometimes that 10% more that staff demand from the kids shows on the field like this. I just wonder if we've crossed a bridge today, cause it's getting to the point it's almost unrecognizable. I'll choose classic DCI over the new stuff every time.
There was real resistance to the "idea" of Star at that time. I heard it in the stands, and you can hear it in the judges at some points. They were too good, though. No way you could put them anything less than 1st in Brass. Such a sad ending--for what could have become of DCI. It's the same problem they are having today.
I think Matt Harloff marched soprano for this show, if so, another example of where he gets it from in relation to Crowns dominance in brass! Even if he didn’t marched that year, he did so in 1991-92 and DM in 1993.
Yes. Matt Harloff (not Harlow) marched this year along with his brother Ben. Ben was really young (I think 14) this year. Amazing to perform this kind of stuff at that age.
High brass QF: Cadets/BD. Semis: Cadets. Finals: Star. Here’s why the current rule sucks. Only the finals #s count in finals - should be the same for captions.
I’ve listened to the 3 Brass judges’ tapes several times. This IS the entirety of the judges comments. I also marched mellophone in STAR 1989 & 1990. 😊
Truly a phenomenal brass performance. But the rest of the corps wasn't as good, particularly in GE Visual (fifth) and Total Visual (tied for fourth). The brass is the only reason Star took third that year.
Even the brass judges were commenting on the brilliance of the visual forms. Zingali’s drill was brilliant and so well suited to the musical impacts. Cadets had a great visual show that year also but I know a few people in the audience that night who really understood what they were witnessing. Brilliant performance all the way through!
Maybe so on the CG side of things but I always felt the drill was spectacular and fun to watch. No whether or not it was written to top off the sheets, I'll leave to smarter people..but you it's hard to say anybody else, save Cadets, approached their demand
@ I get that, but what makes this show legendary among most drum corps fans is the stunning execution a d performance of this very difficult horn book. It takes an average show to other worldly heights.
This show is “judgeable” so speak. How they judge this garbage today, I’ve no idea. I can imagine the judge’s tape now, “lots and lots and lots of notes and then run all over the place like chickens with your heads cut off, and then a really loud, amplified note, but y’all did it better than the last band. This sucks and I really just wanna go drown my sorrows in a nice bottle of single malt.”

You mean 1990 or Star 1990? Both are accurate to your claim!

Must have been a lot of work putting all these tapes together with the video. Very cool!
This show is definitely in my top five of all time, possibly my top three. And it’s in large part thanks to the unbelievable brass line.

Really pushing what a hornline could do in the 90s. The musical and visual demand is so damn high.
Star Should Had NEVER Left being a Drum Corps !
Go Kenosha Kingsmen
This is my favorite DCI show. Top 2 anyway. I was a kid in the stands that night, and this show was incredible.
Great splicing job! I’m a horn geek and love this!
Funny how you can hear a slip/ flaw and it doesn’t take away from the show.
I marched in another corps 90-95 and can say this might be my favorite Star show ever. It’s up there with 93. Love this show!
