Tim Metz really enjoyed the video of the jazz stuff very helpful to know, but I'm well informed about this concept as I've been teaching since I was 16 yrs old, but real handy to show student's.
Dude, I fell asleep with my computer next to me, woke up and still half asleep I saw this and said: DAMN! "Didn't know Marty plays the drums too" hahah True story.
what i love is that Tim presenting the idea of accents as cadence absolutely is the door to walk through to get to phrase orientated heaven freeing us from the bonds of lick orienated hell..........mess with the voicings and orchestrations in the bar to get infinite variations. and tunes..great job Tim! ...and thanks : )
Hello Mr Tim. I come back to your videos often for inspiration. Jazz drumming is not only the tools of technique, swing and feel, but inspiration. Get the tools together and explore what inspires your creativity. It could be anything; art, landscapes, family, religion, literature, and always music. Listen to every kind of music. This simple clip is as inspiring today as it was six years ago and will be thirty years into future. Timeless. Keep pushing Tim, you have a great vibe. Inspire !
Thank you so much! It is comments like these that keep me going. Make sure you're checking out the new videos. I'm planning on a lot more content soon!
Thanks! The one on my right is a 22" Artisan Light ride, and the one on the left is a custom made Sabian Artisan 22" super light over hammered. Glad you like them!
I do a bunch of rhythms using accented doubles but I've never heard that rhythm you play. Thanks for showing me…..now I have one more cool lick. You da man!!!!
This might be the best instructional lesson for guys who are already good players on youtube. Ive met Tim while being on the road and he's one of my favorite players out there. I learn so much from him and this is far my fav instructional next to the Jeff Pocaro instructional
I can't play the drums myself, but for some reason I like watching videos of drummers. If I had a third hand like yours, I would have taken up drumming without hesitation.
This is the only video I have found on youtube after much searching, to give me an idea how to apply rudiments that I have learned to the drum kit, great video
Hey Tim thank you for this video I've been in the jazz band at my high school and I played a solo for the first time in jazz band and I made people's mouths drop to the floor. This video has inspired me to career in jazz drumming. Keep drumming yourself.-Chandler
Hey Chandler, hows jazz band going? I'm super stoked this video helped you. Also, I'm finally putting up new videos, hope you check them out! Sorry it took so long to get back to you on this. I was on a bit of a youtube break.
Don't leave a lot of comments but I just had to say that this was fantastic. I subscribed, even though I don't play drums. Trying to understand different drumming patterns so I can learn to drum parts in Ableton for my own music.
I'd love to be able to play like this, thank you. Is there anything more satisfying in the world than playing something perfect on the drums?? Brilliant stuff
The thing I really like about your playing Tim is how you working your wrists and fingers to create the stick speed and reduce the physical effort in your performance great drumming ! there are a lot of bashers about that think drumming is about how hard and how loud great video
Tim, rudiments played with accents moving round the kit are a great tool for any drummer, I was brought up on Buddy Rich so I can apply my drum skills to Jazz Rock Funk Latin etc speed when needed is built up through practice, you play with no effort which to me is a mark of a great drummer
Really cool. Looks 10x harder than it is. Will be helpful for those nights when you're trading fours a lot and feel the need to do something blazingly fast to impress but not exhaust yourself in the process.
thanks so much for the lesson - Got a lot out of this and feel more knowledgable about what is going when I am singing. . especially appreciate the practice sheet.
Trey Stine I'm always in awe after watching the old school cats like Buddy Rich or Tony Williams. Jazz drumming teaches grooves, fitnesse , dynamics , coordination etc. It's much harder than say ...double bass and blastbeats , but persistence is key !
Nice style, I guess it is a jazz thing to use the bounce and buzz on the snare like that. I have become strict on myself to use the middle and ring fingers in a full controlled bounce, but I don't think I could do what you are doing here. I will remember this if I am ever ready to play jazz. Nice work my friend
I’ve always been fascinated with drum roll soloing, but never saw it dissected so nicely. Thanks for the lesson. I'm recently retired and picking up drums where I left off 35 years ago. My old fart neighbors are not so fascinated however.
I'm so used to playing barefoot that i almost can't do certain pedal techniques while wearing shoes... Just so much more comfortable for me, but while performing its not always possible
Great video, since I am trying to understand how to develop some good jazz solos starting from simple ideas. And there is a lot of different ways to combine accents!
Hey, Tim! Nice chops man. Can you please breakdown left and right hand jazz hits. Like the ghost notes you hit while your playing the ride cymbal. please???
Thanks! Well, they are being mic'ed. There are two Cheap Audio technic a AT2021's for overheads and an Audix D6 for the BD. Most of the sound though is from the drums themselves. There is nothing better than a Gretsch USA! The only tips for making it less choppy is to practice with a metronome and make sure you're getting the right triplet sticking. It can be a little daunting trying to play it slow at first, but if you let your mind go and just think about the accents, you will get it!
Great playing man. Love that ride too. If you flip your left and right in the mix, it will actually match what we are seeing. I'm hearing your ride on the left channel and hats on the right. No big deal though.
Thanks! This is a pretty old video for me now. I think at the time I read some articles about mixing from an audience perspective, I just can't do it anymore. Check out the new ones and see if the mix is any better. Thanks again!
Wow really great video, ive always found it hard to get into jazz and the phrasing but this video explains it really well and your drums sound really nice!
Check out Soloing with Rolls II!

Tim Metz really enjoyed the video of the jazz stuff very helpful to know, but I'm well informed about this concept as I've been teaching since I was 16 yrs old, but real handy to show student's.
Are the rolls "closed" or "open" ? Your execution is flawless!!! Amazing!!
Could you explain the sticking pattern more thoroughly for the triplets? My accents aren't lining up with yours and I'm not sure how to make it work
what I love is that you don't talk to the viewer like they're five like a lot of other teachers
Facts
That Ride is killer, love it.
Thanks for the lesson.
Woah!...It's the Marty Schwartz of drumming!!!!
Dude, I fell asleep with my computer next to me, woke up and still half asleep I saw this and said: DAMN! "Didn't know Marty plays the drums too" hahah True story.
except this guy is way better at drumming than marty schwartz is at guitar.
Teddy Bolanger whaatt?!?! i was thinking the same thing Hahahaha
I thought i am the only one who noticed it
That's what I though at first!! lol
Superb playing. What a wonderful sounding drum-set and cymbal... I'm mesmerized.
you're killer man. wish big band was mainstream. people like you are rare.
what i love is that Tim presenting the idea of accents as cadence absolutely is the door to walk through to get to phrase orientated heaven freeing us from the bonds of lick orienated hell..........mess with the voicings and orchestrations in the bar to get infinite variations. and tunes..great job Tim! ...and thanks : )

I like this Tim guy. He has a good sense of humor. Fine lesson, too.
Man that ride cymbal sounds sweet!!
Thanks! The one on my right is a 22" Artisan Light ride, and the one on the left is a custom made Sabian Artisan 22" super light over hammered. Glad you like them!
They sound fantastic. It is a gorgeous kit.
Looking at this guys comments you could just tell how much he actually cares about the people he's teaching
I do try to answer as many as I can. I love helping other drummers. Cheers!
As a new drummer I enjoyed that.
Thx.
Luv and peace.

You are too kind sir. Thank you and happy new year!
I've rewatched this video a couple times, and after the first 30 seconds i'm always like, "that was insane". Amazing playing
Thank you!
Thank you!

It all sounds good...particularly like the sound of the snare.
Don't leave a lot of comments but I just had to say that this was fantastic. I subscribed, even though I don't play drums. Trying to understand different drumming patterns so I can learn to drum parts in Ableton for my own music.
thank you so much!!, you are not just a outstanding drummer but also an awesome instructor! thank you Tim you are great!!!
I'd love to be able to play like this, thank you. Is there anything more satisfying in the world than playing something perfect on the drums?? Brilliant stuff
It’s good that you introduced yourself AFTER the drum solo, otherwise I would’ve harshly judged you by your fedora. You got mad skills man keep it up!
The thing I really like about your playing Tim is how you working your wrists and fingers to create the stick speed and reduce the physical effort in your performance great drumming ! there are a lot of bashers about that think drumming is about how hard and how loud great video

Great lesson, and that ride is the best sounding ride in the history.
Great lesson. The first time I saw this I could not figure out all the rolls but now I can hear and feel it! Thanks man.
Really cool. Looks 10x harder than it is. Will be helpful for those nights when you're trading fours a lot and feel the need to do something blazingly fast to impress but not exhaust yourself in the process.
You sound great, the drums sound great! Great lesson! I need to shed this. Thanks for posting.
you single made my solos more flavored. It used to be like starwars prequels, now its like the original three!
This video deserves waaayy more likes than it has!
This is great... your videos are really helping me along the way. Appreciated..
So glad to hear! Thanks for watching!
this is one of the most useful tools in any genre for drums
Cool! Nice, easy way to make my trading and soloing sound more full and crowd-pleasing! Thanks for sharing!
nice relaxed touch ...the key is to relax and know in your head what your doing...never get lost in a roll
Great video! Respect for making the sheet music, it really helps a lot!
thanks so much for the lesson - Got a lot out of this and feel more knowledgable about what is going when I am singing. . especially appreciate the practice sheet.
Hi, Tim,
That was 100&1% it`s nice to see real drumming at last and the sandals are OK as well.
Regards, Don.
watching this again because goddamn you just unlocked a whole new realm for me
Awesome!
Marty schwartz is really talented. Never knew he could play drums so well.
You'll never see us in the same room...
Great inspiring video based on the basics. Also great sounding drum kit.
Thanks so much!
love the sound of your snare.
Jonathan Breakwell thanks!
Nice work. Makes me see how triplets vs 8th notes slide in pretty well.
You are a laidback cool cat.
What a gorgeous , gorgeous drum set!
Good job and instruction. Practical stuff for long time drummers who only have basic instruction but want to learn and spice stuff.
That's a nice looking ride cymbal. Great video! Subscribed

Same man, Jazz drumming is another universe for me, im hoping it just comes with age xD
man the fuck up and go play some jazz
miguel meneses yeah i mean once you get down the ride and hi hat pattern, it seems to get easier.
Marky Oosterveen lol basic jazz yeah. But I'm talking about full on technique and rudimental jazz
Trey Stine I'm always in awe after watching the old school cats like Buddy Rich or Tony Williams. Jazz drumming teaches grooves, fitnesse , dynamics , coordination etc. It's much harder than say ...double bass and blastbeats , but persistence is key !
Awesome video Tim! Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. Really trying to level up my jazz drumming and this is perfect. Love from Australia
I always wondered why jazz tom-toms sounded so loose but its like this punchy sounding tom
I didn't understand how you can play with that shoes... but the way you play it's fantastic! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks! I've learned about RUclips and sandals... Check out my new video, a follow up to this one. ruclips.net/video/exLxIzZYxDE/видео.html
That was pure fire 🔥
For real, Keep up the good content
Your feel is very authentic. I love it.
Learned a ton from this. Thanks.
Left side is a 22" Sabian Artisan over hammered prototype, Hihats are 13" Sabain Manhattan. Hope this helps!
Very nice and tight drumming. Going to try this when I find some drums.
That's very cool sounding Solo.. Nice !
I’ve always been fascinated with drum roll soloing, but never saw it dissected so nicely. Thanks for the lesson. I'm recently retired and picking up drums where I left off 35 years ago. My old fart neighbors are not so fascinated however.
Been looking for a lesson on this topic forever. Thanks alot
I love the fact that you play in flip-flops! Great video, definitely gonna use it
are you aloud to play drums in sandals?
I didn't see anything about it in the rule book.
lol
+Zerek I've seen drummers playing bare footed and in ski boots so there's a lot of possibilities.
+tuomollo The drummer for Loggins and Mecina wore construction boots at a concert in Eugene Or '70's
I'm so used to playing barefoot that i almost can't do certain pedal techniques while wearing shoes... Just so much more comfortable for me, but while performing its not always possible
That. That right there is my dreamdrumset from now on... that...damn...sound...too...goooood
So many fun ideas here, great post sir!
Great lesson. Great sounding heads those Aquarian’s !
Beautiful Sabian Cymbals!

Great video, since I am trying to understand how to develop some good jazz solos starting from simple ideas. And there is a lot of different ways to combine accents!

Great playing man. Love that ride too. If you flip your left and right in the mix, it will actually match what we are seeing. I'm hearing your ride on the left channel and hats on the right. No big deal though.

Who dislikes this? I love it dude! Forget about the haters.
What haters?
Sweet lesson!
Thanks!
As always, great work and wonderful instruction! And I love that Great Gretsch round badge sound!
Nicely done lesson. I've never been a drummer, but it was interesting to watch.
Glad you like the video! The breakdown is in the pdf. I didn't play it slower to keep the video as short as I could. Hope this helps!
Your web page doesn't work... Can I get a pdf somehow? I don't get the stickings...(
@@manilichros7595 It works for me. What country are you in?
@@TimMetz Russia 😁
Gretsch's 1955 Cadillac Green lacquer color! Magnificent!
