Great guide!!! For those worried about the deck going to sleep, in desktop mode click on the battery icon then check the box that disables sleep
Thanks homie. Got my 2tb today and plan to do the upgrade later. Was worried about it falling asleep.
Is that in the system settings in desktop mode?
This is what I needed, I really didn't want to do a full clean install on the system.
Thank you for the tutorial, it worked flawlessly! Took about 45 minutes overall to copy 512gb onto a new 2tb drive. I made sure to move the stick every minute or so to not risk the deck falling asleep. Disassembly was a breeze, swapping out the drive was also super easy as well. Heart skipped a beat when it didn’t load right up, but came on about a minute later when I was thinking about taking it apart to see what I did wrong lol. Overall a very informative and step by step tutorial. Don’t forget to set the system password first, there are easy tutorials.
Thanks for the feedback and yes I also had a little panic when it didn't immediately turn back on!
My Steamdeck is arriving anytime now. I have all the tools, 1tb ssd, and enclosure. Can't wait to get started😊
Its an amazing device, I don't use mine nearly as much as I should!
Got an ROG Ally that I prefer over my Steam Deck for most newer games. However, I still prefer my Steam Deck for emulation and less demanding games since it's much easier to get looking nice when docking into my tv.
I upgraded the SSD in the Ally and this guide has me glad that I saved the original SSD so I don't need to spend anything to expand the Steam Deck's. I had the 256GB and the Ally came with a 512. 256GB wasn't cutting it for me 😅
One suggestion when you're taking apart the steam deck try starting from the R1 R2 triggers. I found at least on mine that the right side is looser quicker and is easier to transfer the on snapping for lack of a better phrase. Again this just could be mine but it's something that I've run into that figured I'd share.
Just followed your steps and everything went fine! Thank you!
Did you first format your brand new ssd?
@@AJCoRePlays you don’t need to, it just copies your current one exactly
great video however i keep getting the error after entering my pwd stating
error writing ' /dev/sda' : no space left on device
I dont know what that means because i have a brand new 2tb ssd that it would be copied to from the deck. help please
Thank you! This worked like a charm and was so easy and seamless!
You don't normally clone a mounted filesystem using the dd command. That is probably why some people are ending up with a corrupted image.
I formatted the new SSD on the Steam Deck in gaming mode before cloning. I don't think I was supposed to do that because after putting in the SSD, the Steam Deck said there was no bootable drive. How do I fix this?
Did you fix? How?
A bit late, but you first had to copy the contents of your SSD into the new one. Open your steamdeck up, take out the old SSD, and put the new one in. Put everything back together and then turn it on, done.
Will this work with a dual boot setup? Also, so you need to expand the petitions?
how would i download a cloned ssd i just got a new steam deck and plan on selling the old one, so i dont need to swap out the ssd i just need to clone the old deck and make the new deck download the cloned info i have an old ssd to be a third party to transfer without doing hardware modifications.
hey nice guide. I have a question. I'm planning to use this method to avoid reimaging my steam OS because i'm having serious issues with 3.5 and would like to stay on 3.4. could you confirm whether this method can help me do that? I've read that reimaging the deck forces you to install the latest steam OS. thanks in advance!
It didn't ask me to update, I'm still on an older version
good video, took me less than 30 minutes
This is one thing that your gonna buy, use once, and never use again
i follow the step the code? is it broken i have enough space but why does it say dd: error writing /dev/sda no space left on device.
no mate, the code works perfect for me, check capitals, spaces etc
You need to format the ssd correctly
had same issue
Made one partition on ssd as ext4
Command worked without issues 👌
Haven't tried booting from it yet
@@filipb.8698did it work?
Any help failed to open no medium found
I was able to change my password, thank you
Hey buddy...great tutorial. By chance would you know if that same procedure can be done when a Steam Deck already has Dual boot? A friend of mine is going to give me his steam deck that has windows on it and he told me it has windows 10 on it for dual boot and windows is installed in a separate partition. So my question is I wanted to change the SSD in there to a 2TB, would you know if that same "Cloning" you just did would work? Dual boot with two separate partitions?
I don't know sorry
@@jamigagaming Hey it's cool. No need to apologize. I appreciate you letting me know and doing this video, as I'm about to give it a shot myself. Just not sure whether to install Windows before.... or after cloning. Take care.
@@jt2quick leave a comment on what you do and what's the outcome 👍
@@jamigagaming Will do buddy. all we can do is share and learn. But looks like I'll have to wait a bit. I checked the Steam's website and so far no audio drivers, wifi or bluetooth for the OLED. I'll just play around for now, loading ROMS and see how other outside apps operate on the Steam. Have a good weekend.
Maybe you can try with clonezilla? Did you try & succeed btw?
Solid tutorial 🔥
Did everything, even booted up normally but after restarting it, it didnt go oast boot logo. What should i do. Copied an almost filled 512 ssd to my new 2tb ssd
You figure it out?
@@X02Overdoseyea, the way he did it is not the way at all to do it(future corruption possibility). You have to install on a small usb Clonezilla(basically a mini OS), its like 1gb, and then connect your external ssd enclosure with the new tb ssd inside(steamdeck completely off while doing this). Need a dock for this so u can charge and connect usb and enclosure at the same time)Connect it and boot up to bios(hold volume- and power button same time until u hear that beep then let go)
@@X02Overdose i mean Rescuezilla, its the same as Clonezilla but Rescue has the easy user interface which is straightforward. After booting up youll see one of either drives as options, the usb and external ssd. Choose the name of your usb, carefully, that has Rescuezilla installed. It will boot up to the OS and probably the screen orientation will be sideways so use a mouse and after that you'll see the options to clone your internal steam deck ssd to the new one. After that just wait and it should work after you replace the old ssd
Need this to keep my Yuzu.
So if it clones, then it makes a copy of the old drive including partition size! 😊, but then if the new drive is bigger, how do you open up the additional space to be “usable”?
I have the same question, this shouldn't work... Unless SteamOs has some script that runs on boot checking for that and expands the partition
Exactly this. Steamos is smart enough to repartition everything.
Do you need to format new ssd, before all this?
Most come formatted but probably wouldn't be a bad thing
So now if I want to clone my steam deck to the new oled deck, how do I do that? I bought the new le deck and want to just plug in the decks to each other and clone the drive over. Is that possible?
Not recommended
had issues where it wouldnt boot the new clone drive and error code said root account was locked so I tried again after wiping partitions and the drive in kde partition, but when I ran the script again I was told there was no space on the drive seems I had to write sdc instead of sda for some reason in the script
Did it work? Is urs oled tho?
@@LaymanGamin it worked, unfortunately I had to do it twice.. but it's been fine for a month now.
@@LaymanGamin LCD btw
Just got a teamgroup 2tb 2230 nvme ssd for $170.. already have a teamgroup $60 1tb micro sd
1tb prices getting better
@@jamigagaming yessss i did the upgrade yesterday with your video and it worked great. I had to search up how to set a sudo password and then i was good. I’m so happy, I’m at work right now but it’s at home in the dock downloading games !! :) 3tb total storage now ! $400 deck + $230 for 3tb = $630 steam deck with 3tb storage ! Valve’s factory largest is 512gb for $650!
152$ now for 2tb
"until 1tb prices get reasonable." When do you think that will be? should i wait?
Dont know, the prices will come down but when you wait the prices of larger ones might come down so do you wait for that?
The prices for 1tb on Aliexpress are getting decent but I personally don't trust storage devices from them
I just got a 1tb Sabrent Rocket for $65.99
Is this updated? I mean still can be done with the current update and oled?
Don't have an oled to try sorry, maybe someone who has can comment.
U don’t need clonezilla?
worked
My Deck wont turn on now
Did you figure it out?
Hey mate, not sure what im doing wrong, tried this 2 times, and my new ssd doesnt load, just stuck on the logo screen, it only loaded once and hasnt loaded to steam os, have tried 2 times now still no luck
How long you leaving it? Mine did the same I think I turned it off started again and it froze but I left it a few minutes and it started, didn't look like it was loading anything?
I left it for nearly 30 minutes bud no luck lol no idea what's going on, might have to use something like clonezilla and try again
@@jamigagaming finally managed to sort it lol has to format the new drive within Linux on every partition and then tried cloning again and now it works! Thanks for the great guide again bud really helpful
@@nextingzhi
Same problem
Please, help me
Which format you choose to format?
Ntfs, fat, exfat or you set storage empty and don’t format it?
I used lsblk because it wasn't detecting the new SSD as sda but now after I've cloned the drive my steam deck boots into a black screen (context I'm trying to clone it to an OLED steam deck which I'm selling my old one)
Did u ever figure it out ? I too am about to try on oled. But I’m gonna use clonezilla
It's only a great guy because he doesn't show you that desktop mode fails when you do this. It only works one time and then when you shut it down and you restart it it goes to a black screen of death. Nobody will show you this.
??? Mine has never failed??
LMAO, something goes wrong during the process, and your first troubleshooting step is to immediately jump to the conclusion that the creator of the video intentionally and maliciously gave bad info and secretly broke their own steam deck on purpose because... reasons I guess? (And somehow no one else in the comments but you noticed despite thousands of people doing these steps?) 😂😂
If this is how you think when something doesn't go as planned, electronics modding and repair is just not for you bud.
