Don't diesel cars last longer, wear out parts less, and get a little more mileage than gas cars

The cars with small diesel 4 cly engines, usually get 30% more mpg and torque than gas engines.
In europe we even have 3 cyl diesels, and damn do these get great gas mileages
"turbo" diesel... a big difference against a normal corolla 1.8, that is why I prefer small petrol turbo engine... mmm nah that is a lie I prefer a OM606 diesel or any N/A engine with a more big displacement

Diesel engines in cars today with the DEF in their SCR systems pollute less than gasoline engines.
Innfact, if you drive a New diesel car in a pulloted City your car Will suck in more particalls then what the car lets out.
There is a big difference in big truck engines and passenger car engines. Trucks have way more strict emission standard even if both are called euro 6. This is true for truck engines, dont belive its true for passenger cars.
Got a 335d with the exact same engine and I get 37mpg interstate 30mpg city. Live in Tennessee so I don't worry about stupid emissions anyhow.
@Burni lasy that is som expensive filter you have. My filter cost under 60$ for air, Oil and fuel filter. And the engine can handle the particalls, they can run a Long time with an egr valve
@Burni lasy well yes that is expensive, but i Just cut it off and replaced it with 3" pipes. And off course kept the original for emission tests

@@damson777 exactly he bases his whole video on one car when he doesn’t know e39 diesels are the best
Awesome I wish I had your vehicle.
Loved the video great discussion 👍🏻 Some things you might want to consider
1. Per gallon diesel produces more energy than gas
2. Diesel combustion is more efficient adding to higher fuel efficiency and lower CO2
3. diesel fuel is denser than petrol and contains about 15% more energy by volume (roughly 36.9 MJ/litre compared to 33.7 MJ/litre)
4. Accounting for the difference in energy density, the overall efficiency of the diesel engine is still some 20% greater than the petrol engine, despite the diesel engine also being heavier.
5. A fuel consumption of 1 litre per 100km corresponds to approximately 26.5g CO2/km for diesel and 23g CO2/km for petrol, depending on the exact composition of the fuel.
To say Petrol pollutes less is an over simplification. When you Americans drive your big F truck around with large displacement V8’s you are throwing the baby out with the bath water.🤦🏼
@@bielmelichartes2167 My Diesel runs on sunflower oil and used cooking oil. Cant get get any greener than that!
saying diesel pollutes less just because it gives off less co2 is an extreme oversimplification as well because it gives off larger amounts of other air pollutants. this shows just how deep the conversation goes and how there's so many moving parts to a conversation about emissions. definitely not something that can be argued in the format of youtube comments.
@zacharypalmer2247 let not forget how toxic lithium pools and gas are to the environment.

I'm a BMW trained mechanic. I work on BMW vehicles everyday, and I can say with certainty that BMW vehicles are the best engineered cars on the road. I see them with over 2 or 3 hundred thousand miles everyday. I have seen many of Scottie's videos talking about how BMW's are junk and it's just not true. I run into what amount to many back yard mechanics like Scotty that act like they know what they are talking about, as far as this issue is concerned and I'm referring to Scottie's overall negative attitude towards BMW and I can say from real life experience he doesn't.
Agreed, I have an E60 520d with 185k, only a few bits have gone in 13 nearly 14 years but not expensive items. The drive and the cruising ability is excellent, I've had the money to buy any next one tucked away for 2 years, it still won't die :)

GM’s infamous Olds diesel, I think, is what killed diesels in America and eventually the entire Oldsmobile division.
I miss Oldsmobile
Jim Allen - I’d take Oldsmobile or Pontiac back over Buick any day. To hell with China. Obviously they don’t know what a good car is, and most good cars don’t go by the name of “Buick”.
That argument's hilarious because since the 80's Oldsmobile, Pontiac, Chevy, and Buick have ALL been the same exact cars just with different body styling. Only difference was the Buicks and Oldsmobiles typically had nicer interiors.
@Slingblade 61 I agree 🤣
Enrique Ortiz - You have a point, but you’ve also forgotten that there were some Oldsmobile and Pontiac vehicles that GM tried to separate from the herd. Cars like the Aurora and Intrigue were meant to help revive Oldsmobile and they didn’t share as much with other GM products. The Pontiac G8 was nothing like any other GM offering in America at the time. Engines like the Quad 4 and “Shortstar” V6 were originally exclusive to Oldsmobile. All proved to be either underwhelming or too little too late for each division, but what’s more irreplaceable are the pairs’ history and place in American culture. Buicks on the other hand have almost always been seen as grandpa cars and the Chinese market is the only reason they’re still around. I for one could live without Buick.
IDK, We in europe dont have any problems with diesels, and if i remember correctly you had smog, and not us, modern diesels are much better than they used to be, so stop giving false information.
I did a Cummins 4bt swap on my '89 full size bronco. When I had the 351 in it was lucky to reach 9 mpg, but with the 4bt I'm averaging between 21 and 22 mpg.
While diesel may be about 25 cents a gallon more per gallon, over doubling my fuel mileage has more than made up for it. To top it off, with a 33 gallon tank it's nice to have to only fill up every 600 miles or so, or once every 3-4 weeks.

@@carholic-sz3qv Even the modern ones have same amount of KM just look on European selling sites.. i think they may be reliable since they got plenty of KM out of them.
german E series taxicabs are specifically made as commercial vehicles, that level of attention to durability and resistance is not available for american mercs
Yes I'm learning quickly that diesels are expensive to maintain. But 440 hp tows my trailer just fine.
Diesel in Europe is subsidized, diesel is more efficient , great torque, it the emissions that make it unreliable.
My uncle owned a Volkswagen Passat with diesel engine and it got 80 miles a gallon 🤙
I daily drive a junker Jetta from 1986 and can confirm, if you find nice road and keep constant speed in fifth gear it seems like it's going on pure air lol
When they break they also break you financially and mentally.
The Cummins diesels in Ram pickups are pretty awesome.
The older ones
Afaik it's the gold standard diesel workhorse.
@@sweetwilliam49 New ones are good too, I have the 5.0 V8 in my Titan XD, couldn't be happier!
Those are really the only diesels I like to be honest
Too bad it comes wrapped in a Ram.
290hp/600nm while managing 60 miles per gallon on the highway. Can't get that from any gasoline engine.
Leased a 2014 535d a few years back. The best car I've ever had. No issues and 34 mpg combined on a 4,000 lb. car. Often got 40+ mpg on the highway.
Scotty, someone else said this:
If you hate people, drive diesel.
If you hate environment, drive petrol.
That's the dumbest thing i've ever heard
@@virenvs905 you really dont know the facts then?
@@MrSevnie He does. Diesel cars emit more solid particles in the air. You don''t know the facts
@Martin Svensson Define "crap". Diesels put out more fine particulates than gasoline, but those particulates wash out of the air very quickly. Meanwhile, gasoline engines put out MUCH more carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide, which stays in the air for centuries. It is one of the reasons for climate change. Particulates, on the other hand, actually help mitigate any greenhouse effects by creating a light barrier, or albido effect, which keeps heat away from the Earth, but, like I said, it washes out of the atmosphere very quickly. So, what giutarsrockforever is saying, Diesel exhaust isn't bad for the environment (can be good for it), but sucks to breath in; gasoline exhaust dissipates quickly enough when not confined, but really screws over the environment for the long haul.
Good one. And if you hate both, drive a diesel hybrid.
Most cars are “affordable” ish if you do your own work. It’s 2019 so there are many DIY’s online. If you want to play, you have to pay.
Difference is, some cars (like BMW) have much more expensive parts.
80's Boombox Collector To some degree, sure. Pelican Parts and eBay are great places to source your parts. I normally go aftermarket and only OEM on the electrical components. Refurb parts are great as well and more affordable.
1Man Army Nothing is impossible. The word itself says “I’m Possible”. The thought of “if you can’t maintain it, you can’t afford it” is subjective. For all the German car lovers, paying a mechanic for all your basic maintenance would be astronomical for the average person. For example, an oil change on most Porsche’s are about $495 depending in where you live. Doing it yourself is about $70 with good premium oil and you learn how to do it. I do understand what you’re saying though.
1Man Army That’s right. :-)
@1Man Army or time
Mine had 1 code for DPFE...Got a used one at yard for a few dollars...been fixed over a year.
Something something... "endless money pit!" . But no Toyota drives like a BMW.
Diesels get better MPG when under load than petrol engines, that’s why every commercial engine is diesel
Love the vids learning a lot but, the cost of diesel went up because of the epa that ultra low sulfur stuff they mandate cost more to make and cost a lot more to buy
True. That sulfur helped with lubrication, but it caused a lot of cancer and asthma for young kids.
In cities where there are lots of diesel cars, like Paris, parents are advised to not use low strollers for their babies.
I’m so thankful and grateful to California and the EPA. Saving lives, improving health.
Just imagine if Scotty had Wilson from Home Improvement as a neighbor
....hidey ho there Scotty....I'm so fortunate to live between a mechanic and a guy who thinks he can fix problems in houses....
I love the sound of diesels. Not sure why.
me too
Best car I‘ve owned a E60 BMW 530 Diesel. 600 NM or 442 lbf ft.
34 mpg average . No particlefilter, no troubles.
My E60 530d has 300000km on the clock still happy with it
I'll keep my 1993 Mercedes 300D 2.5 turbo a little longer...lol!
Keep it as long as you can!
Has it been reliable for you?
@@gpboutabag8504 It was until about 9 mo ths ago when I discovered that the ASD differential was eating itself. So then I had it rebuilt a couple months ago and it seems to be eating itself again. My mechanic said to put some miles on it, but I don't know...might have to go back. This is almost completely unheard of in these cars. Also, I found a rust hole near the jacking point that I need to fix. Otherwise, the car has been relatively trouble-free.
Got the bmw x5 e70 3.5d since 2009, it still runs more than well, do your oil change regulary...
And with correctly spec'd oil! People wonder why they have DPF problems when manuals specifically state put of spec oil WILL cause contamination of DPF.
I love diesel, have a diesel car and truck.
I LOVE those old Diesel Mercedes, can convert em to French Frie Mobiles (run on cooking oil instead of gasoline) so easily 🤤👍🏻
Instead of gasoline? It's a diesel engine.
I love my 35d. I get 25 MPG in the city. Thing is a beast of an SUV.
I generally like your videos but having personally owned a X5 35d I feel inclined to share some important information before you scare diesel owners. First, the M57 Diesel engine is one of the most reliable engines BMW produced and it’s been in production a long time. The weakest point is the emission systems which inevitably was addressed. BMW extended the warranty on all emission related parts to 10years/120k miles so unless the vehicle in the video is beyond that criteria, the owner would have the parts replaced absolutely free. I know this for a fact as I owned not only the X5 35d but also currently own a 335d and both had parts replaced. As for mileage my X5 got 25mpg city and 29-30 on highway which is extremely I
Pressure for such a heavy vehicle. My 335d currently gets 29mpg city and up to 40mpg Highway!!!!! My point is that a 35d only getting 18mpg clearly has a problem. My personal opinion is that the diesel BMWs are fantastic. Tons of torque, great gas mileage, much more reliable than the v8 counterpart and typically Diesel engines last longer than gas. All that being said, owning outside of the mentioned warranty period could get expensive and I noticed a trend of part failures being more predominate with vehicles that were driven primarily on city streets vs highway.
@Humveeholic Yes the warranty would've expired already, bc that X5 is a 2009. Hence it's initial in service date was presumably 2008, making the extended warranty good thru 2018. Of course we"re abt to enter 2020. Were it under warranty, the owner would be taking it to a BMW dealer service, as u probably have.
S.C. Gordon I guess the front bumper is throwing me off because it’s a 2011+ front bumper. This means they would have had to replace the front bumper and fenders to upgrade the look, not very common.
Polluting diesels, pollution involved with making electric vehicles, ok rev up my petrol banger!🤙🛠
It's actually much cheaper and greener to convert a vehicle into an electric one than it is to buy a new one.
@@itspapaj4732 yes I've heard that, though vehicle manufacturers don't want that as there is zero money for them. Maybe the way forward is companies doing conversions?🤙🛠
@@dazmac159 there's tons of companies that offer affordable swaps in the states. Most of the swaps run you around 5-10k and for the most part it's a basic system that anybody can work on. The real issue is getting everybody on board to swap their cars.
4:58 Scotty you really need to clean that wall!!!
I had a nightmare last night: I bought a used high mileage BMW
Ironic isn't it, that such a terrible vehicle can become "high mileage"?
diesels make all the power around 2k rmp while most gasoline go from 4k to 7k rpm, which means less wear on the engine and less fuel consumption
I’d say you’re wrong. Most diesels are more torquey, more robust and far more reliable compared to gasoline engines. And people talking about turbos failing some diesel turbos last like forever. It depends on what you get like always
Also I used to hate diesels until my dad owned one 😂.
I love diesel engines, I do a lot of offroading and they have more torque and work under water
Todd m 🤣
Todd m
So are you
Todd m got triggered
Ima take my diesel and go visit the titanic! Thanks for the great information.
@Todd m you can go water wading in a gas engine, not completely submerge it in water (even with a snorkel and exhaust extension), the ignition will go haywire and the engine will shut off, since diesels do not have an external ignition system, you can completely submerge the engine In water (of course you need a snorkel) and generally they are a lot easier to waterproof, that why it's the engine of choice for the military and construction industry.
I have an X35D, requires an owner to pay attention to things. I use mine for very long highway trips around the USA and Canada. Great for that. I don't think I would be the same SUV for using in the city. If you need to bomb around the countryside on bad roads and in bad weather this is a great SUV though.
Ah, the smell of diesel exhaust in the morning! Better than a good coffee! Love my F-250 diesel!
Hey Scotty I have had diesels for 20 years up to this built in 2005 Never had a single problem with the engines except basic maintenance
Hey Scotty! Love your channel. New subscriber here. You think this poor reliability is aimed at USA? I just came from Europe (Germany, Austria, Italy and Switzerland) and most of the cars I saw on the road were German especially Bimmers and Benzes and many Audis as well from a few years old to 10 years old running smoothly. Obviously 95% of them diesel. I asked a few owners and they say German cars are reliable as heck. You think since the US is a consumer driven economy, they make them unreliable, so they keep upgrading to new models and suckers who bought used ones keep spending on their costly parts?
Hey Scotty:
I want to buy a BMW diesel car.
Scotty:
Gas hog money pit!
4:06 RIP Scotty's braincells.
scotty does not succumb to mortal frailties
Have to have some to start though. 🤔
That motor is one of the most reliable motors every built by the Germans.
Word!!!!!
It lasts easy for a good 8 lakh kilometers
Yes indeed , I have 3 of them and an absolute beast of an engine with twin turbos
Scotty I love you man but you're wrong regarding the fuel consumption. Keep in mind that x5 is more than 2200kg in weight and the equivalent gasoline engine hogs 30% more fuel... Given the price of Diesel is almost the same as gasoline you can do the calculations. Plus diesel engines are not really made to be driven in cities but rather highways where the case of noise turns around because you have 1500-2000 rpm for the diesel vs 2500-3000 for the gasoline engine. Btw I also kinda hate diesels due to high maintainance costs but they're crazy reliable and have much more life than a gasoline engine IF you maintain them properly.
