I always liked the song, but once you hear the words properly - it's a masterpiece! And in the chorus, I always thought she was singing "Oh Lord", Babooshka". And then recently to realize the lyric is actually "All yours, Babooshka" - i.e. that's how she signed the letters. Wow! The whole thing is genius! Kate Bush is a genius!
“If he’d follow for her incognito”… You’d have to be called & certified DEAD not to fall for our Dear Miss Kate…just saying LOL! One of those rare times where physical beauty meets towering, generational talent! 👊🥂
About twenty years ago, I was browsing a CD shop with a few friends and one of them pointed out the greatest hits of Kate Bush. I asked him why I would be interested. "Well, didn't you say you downloaded that Babooshka videoclip from her?" "Hey, hot redhead in a chainmail bikini! Why wouldn't I download it?"
I hadn't heard this song in years. Great reaction Harri! A little trivia: "babooshka" or "бабушка" in Russian means either "elderly woman" or "grandmother", depending on context in a Russian sentence.
you are a lucky man,you have got the chance to listen to the music instead of just consuming music. In her youth Kate Bush was supported by David Gilmour from Pink Floyd and Peter Gabriel from Genesis. That´s the maximum support a talent can get.
I'm late on this but the concept of the story is very old, probably it's most well known version is the Marriage of Figaro by Mozart. It's also sung from a male perspective in the pop song of the 70's "The Pina Colada Song".
Our Miss Kate said in an interview was just giving into her needless insecurities, and even when fantasizing the wife’s husband’s imagination is STILL only filled with thoughts of her when she was still happy & outgoing!
I warmly recommend two women who are also special and original singers - Lene Lovich and Nina Hagen. Both ladies were active in the same period as Kate Bush, in the transition between the 70s and 80s.
Great choices ! .. Both were eccentric in a good way .. Loved Lene in particular, and have just about all her recordings .. Played her Stateless album to death when I got it .. And still have my Nina Hagen " African Reggae" single .. Cheers, Wayne
The way I read the lyrics is that it has an ironic and happy ending. She goes incognito and tries to "test" him by being seductive. He recognizes her and plays along as if she was role-playing: [verse 2] And when he laid eyes on her He got the feeling they had met before Uncanny how she Reminds him of his little lady Capacity to give him all he needs Just like his wife before she freezed on him Just like his wife when she was beautiful He shouted out: "I'm all yours ... All yours ... [chorus]
I have a different take. She thinks he's falling for a different woman, not realizing he's falling for what she used to be. She then blows up, glass is breaking, the marriage is over. And its entirely her fault.
A staggering talent who has not been recognised by the government. All these actors who don't even do their own stuff given "honours". Should be at least a Dame if not first in line to the throne !!
You really should check out Carolina Eyck's cover of this song. She plays a very special and almost magical instrument that is very rarely performed with. She is a Master in every term of the word with it, and I believe may very well be the only one in the world who could be called that. I am sure it will leave you speechless and gob smacked.
The cello in the video is meant to represent the huband while Kate is representing the wife in a very geometric/aggressive way. The song is about the paranoïd state into which a wife put herself into regarding the faithfulness/unfaithfulness of her husband. Everything happens in her head and not in reality. She thinks her husband is unfaithful but realises he is not while she is trying to trap him to prove he is by sending him letters and by meeting him incognito. In Kate's own words : "And the whole idea of the song is really the futility and the stupidness of humans, and how, by our own thinking and swimming round in our own ideas, we come up with completely paranoid facts. So, in her situation, she was in fact suspicious of a man who was doing nothing wrong - he loved her very much indeed - and through her own sort of suspicions and evil thoughts she's really ruined the relationship."
Yes, Kate is gorgeous and dressed very seductively, but she always had CLASS. There is a big difference between sensuality and sexuality and Kate personified the former. Just look at her video of "The Sensual World" - Kate is barefoot but dressed nearly head to toe and exudes 10 times the sensuality of most of today's female twerking, near naked "singers." And the only clothes Kate took off in that video was her hat!!!
What's ironic is the man in the song falls for Babooshka BECAUSE she reminds him of his wife, how she used to be. I've loved her music since she appeared on SNL although I never cared for her mime-dancing, it always seemed silly to me. "Hounds of Love" is her finest hour I think. Side 2 is a music suite called 'The Ninth Wave', very progressive.
This song may be influenced by an English folk song called Sovay, regardless it's such a sad beautiful song. Kate presents the lyrics more like a fable, it's emotionally complex and a warning at the same time. Kate is such an incredible artist. There are only two artists that have me completely undone & ensorcelled -- Kate Bush & Prince (born a month apart).
‘She couldn’t have made a worse mistake’ So the wife also wasn’t in the right from Kate’s pov. As far as the revealing outfit, I think it was for a good reason as she was supposed to represent the husband’s fantasy of the Babushka character. I can’t think of another instance of her wearing this kind of outfit actually, so she only does it when it fits the story. She definitely had a fantastic figure though!
Kate Bush was a fully trained dancer who studied with David Bowie’s dance teacher Lindsey Kemp but she was also a master of karate too. And you’re right - her videos were never played on the BBC or MTV at the time because they found them too risqué so they’d get her to do these stupid toned-down videos (they did it with “Running Up That Hill” too, they couldn’t handle how overtly sexual her performances were). And yet as a person she was so polite and restrained like the girl next door. I love how she starts off looking like a sexed-up Italian widow in that tight black catsuit and widow’s veil spinning the double-bass like a toy and the next thing she looks like a sexed-up Joan Of Arc slashing her sword around and showing off her gorgeous athletic figure. Madonna would never admit it but she got a lot of her visual ideas from English singers like Kate Bush and Siouxsie Sioux who used dance and virtuoso musicianship to get their songs across. It seems so obvious now but back then 40 years ago (40 years ago -- arrrrgh I’m old!) this was like a revolution.
Ultimately it's a story about a man being tested.... but at every stage only guilty of recognizing the love of his own wife as she 'used' to be, as Kate sings at the start ''she couldn't have made a worse mistake', because she was tormenting her husband with the excitement that 'she' herself had once given him freely and lovingly when younger, as kate puts it '' before the tears',' ''before she froze on him''. In the end, he was only guilty of falling in love with his 'own' wife again !, this is not a betrayal or cheating as he was only attracted to this woman because of his own wife's love. Kate is clearly saying if she could have shown this love to entrap him, maybe she should have put that energy and love into keeping her husband happy, rather than freezing him out and ruining their marriage because of some twisted view of him, a resentment, jealousy and thoughts of betrayal over many years that were in the end totally false. She had wasted all those years withholding her attention and love from a man, who only ever loved and adored her. Kate's insight into an elderly relationship from a man's perspective and her understanding of it's dynamics and her sympathy at such an early age is remarkable and rare, of course she is hugely talented as a singer and dancer, but her writing is simply astounding.

I've watched the video several time and every time I am mesmerized. Almost like there is a hidden witch or warrior in her.
Great choice Harri. Kate is a global treasure. A true creative, innovative artist.
After that it goes seamlessly into "Delius" which is flawless.
Kate Bush is greatest female artist of the last fifty years. She is my favorite after The Beatles.
The Beatles, Kate Bush, ABBA, Elvis...then all the rest!
I remember serving in NI and in my room having a poster of her in this outfit on my wall she was a goddess in my eyes.
Amazing song!
Kate Bush. Genius. That is the statement . End.

Don't forget, she plays the keyboards on most of her songs.
We love Kate. Especially this song. Check out Wuthering Heights, Running up That Hill and cloudbusting
Instead of tricking your man treat him. You dont have to be 20. Play, flirt, that is my advice. What a interesting song Harri!
Great song, the beginning always reminds me of Breathing another great, this is not the video I remember though, nice choice
Great reaction! Apparently she mashed a lot of porcelain to get the proper sound to sample. That's dedication!

@@tjj300 Perhaps. Many good songs are deliberately ambiguous -- gives you something to think about the next time you listen to it.
@@tjj300 tbh the marriage is over if her husband can't recognise her in what assume is a wig and makeup lol

@Davy Blackburn It’s a double bass. A cello is much smaller.
@Davy Blackburn No, I know. I was just confirming that it was a double bass.

Kate is beyond beautiful, she is a goddess.
I changed the words Babooshka to the word stranger

It's fair to entrap your husband/wife if you have good reason, nothing wrong with that!

I think at the end she revealed herself and killed him.
