I'm honestly not sure if Reformed tradition borrowed that from Catholicism or Catholicism borrowed that from Reformed. But it's very similar to what I've heard reformed people preaching in God's active vs passive will or something like that.

I forgot exactly what time during the podcast that would be the quote you gave and which I'm referring to.. So forgive me for not being clear.. But throughout the podcast the distinctions kept being made about suffering in such a way that it was even more revelatory than Archbishop Fulton Sheen talks of which I've heard most of them on RUclips
Fathers, could you please make an episode talking about penance? Why is it that so many saints seemed to extol suffering, even the seeking of suffering? Why would it be valuable to God that we would take up a voluntary suffering, such as a hairshirt or a pebble in the shoe or similar non-damaging yet inconvenient things? It makes perfect sense that we accept and embrace the sufferings Providence puts on our path, but I don't see how seeking discomfort would be spiritually beneficial. It sounds even a bit pagan... as if we are "paying a price" and now we want the receive the goods - a blessing, forgiveness, or whatever it is.
