Listen to "What is love" or "Scatman's World" or "Believe (in life after love)" or "Cotten-Eyed Joe". Dance music in the 90s was generally produced with dry/untouched drum samples from a 909 and (rarely) an 808 or 707, and the synth leads were equally dry/un-processed, not to mention the piano soundfonts were generally from a Yamaha keyboard and the vocals in the majority of 90s dance music were typically untouched as well, aside from some light EQ or compression. The drums in Blue are obviously multi-layered and heavily saturated and compressed, with tons of filtering and EQ to bring out their tone. The synths are clearly slathered in reverb, heavily filtered and EQ'd, as is the Korg piano lead and the backing pad synth. The vocals are over-driven and heavily distorted using a Digitech harmonizer (VERY uncommon for the time, though many songs would later release copying many of these formulas). My point was, nobody else was doing things like this in mainstream dance music in the 90s, which is why the song stands out so much and has such a timeless feel to it. As a mix engineer, it is my opinion that 80s music does NOT sound timeless at all, because it was all produced to sound alike. You can hear the 707 snare sample layered underneath the real drum kit and burried under a gated reverb and INSTANTLY know you're hearing an 80s song because it's a dead giveaway. The hard rock, the metal, all of the dance music and most of the hip-hop all carry this trend through the entire decade, and at least to my ears, immediately acts as a dead giveaway that I'm listening to something produced in the 80s.

Like I said, I am a mixing engineer, and so I am always hyper-aware of how a song I'm listening to was produced and mixed and as far as pop music goes, I can immediately pick out an 80s and 90s tune, even if it's from an artist I'm not familiar with. And that was my reasoning for saying 80s music isn't timeless - the techniques and approaches to recording and production back then are dated, and there are just certain things we don't do that way anymore, which makes it stand out and ties the song to the era it is from. Please don't misunderstand me to think I'm saying that I don't like 80s music or that 80s music has something wrong with it, quite the opposite in fact. There was new technology in mainstream synthesizers that many bands had to experiment with because they were pioneers in their age and few other artists had used those instruments that way before. You can actually feel this childlike wonder seeping into the music, you can feel that pioneering spirit. It's just that to me, this sentiment, from 80s (and 70s, 60s and 50s for that matter) music feels dated because the landscape in music today is just so different. Anyway, that's just my outlook, I'm not trying to convey my viewpoint as a fact, just my own perception.

I was born in 1993. I remember it was the summer of 2000. My aunt was taking my cousins and i to Odyssey Fun World in IL. I was so excited, and then, I remember hearing this song on the radio. It just completely revolutionized my taste in music. I already listened to a lot of "Europop, dance, techno" type stuff without knowing what it was, like I was a fan of Space Jam (theme song and the "Y'all Ready for This") and the Vengaboys "We Like to Party!" And then there were songs that came a bit later, like "ATC - All Around The World" (the la la la la la one). And now, today, I pretty much still listen to the same type of house and dance stuff lol. This era was like no other. Even the Y2K futuristic aesthetic, i see why it's so popular again now!

It just completely revolutionized my taste in music. I already listened to a lot of "Europop, dance, techno" type stuff without knowing what it was, like I was a fan of Space Jam (theme song and the "Y'all Ready for This") and the Vengaboys "We Like to Party!" And then there were songs that came a bit later, like "ATC - All Around The World" (the la la la la la one). And now, today, I pretty much still listen to the same type of house and dance stuff lol.
This era was like no other. Even the Y2K futuristic aesthetic, i see why it's so popular again now!
