Here’s an interesting fact. Check your car’s wading depth. Sometimes it’s not about where your air intake is, the transmission has breather pipes which will allow water into your diffs if you’re not careful. It might not be immediately obvious that you’ve damaged them either.
Wow, I had no idea. Thank you. I thought I would be totally fine in my Toyota Highlander, b/c my air intake is above the grill, and just below the hoodline, and that's like over 3' off the ground. I had no idea about the transmission. I did blow through about 2' feet of water one time, with no issues other than some sound padding/inslulation come out of my right fender.

Good call. Just checked my Volvo XC60 T8. It states floor level at walking speed. Its not the same as a standard (non hybrid) XC60. Obviously due to the battery pack in the 'tunnel'. I'm never in such a rush that I want to risk a big bill... I will enjoy the longer journey and not end up a RUclips victim.

Lesson no1: Unless you have a 4x4 with a snorkel, as soon as you see a flooded road or a river running through a road turn around and find an alternative route. 😂
Yes, but how many snorkel-equipped 4x4s have extended transmission and axle breathers too?
There will be failures on the way due to emulsified oils.
@@JBinthesticksnot many but then theyre not required..otherwise manufacturers would have said max wading is up to your axle seal or would have fitted extended ones. Just routine maintenance after extended driving through water as per owners manual, which is usually just re grease prop shaft and check your breathers one way valves arent siezed. Fair point though i doubt many people try their brakes after fording let alone the condition of diff oils

The Garages are doing good business. Replacing “ destroyed” engines! This is Not a small problem. Sometimes ( if the engine dies out ) you have to expect a huge bill ! It’s not a quick fix.. Like-a simple clearing out of the water, etc, The engine could be wrecked ! Don’t go through ANY water surface faster than walking pace and Never if it is more than 12 inches deep,
I’ve yet to see a Mercedes sprinter van survive anything more than a puddle 😂
I used to do deliveries in the Purbecks in a Merc Sprinter ... there's a ford near Cerne Abbas. If the marker showed more than one foot deep, I'd turn around.

@@geoffletkemann653 yeah if your seals suck, and depends on the design of the truck. If the rubber is in good shape it should be pretty much water proof.

Yes they have just 80cm a SLOW wading depth🤔once over the bonnet slam panel with the air intake your relying on a thin rubber strip to keep water out..Those that a are fitted with front bars have the lower rubber splitter removed which is there to divert water to the sides so 🌊🛻over the bonnet =over faster
Also the breathers for the axles are inline with the fuel filler neck and engine bay. So if your engine locks, chances are the diffs are fucked as well.

I gotta say i've seen TONS of these vids, and yet just on Monday i ended up in a flood unsigned by the council in the rain at night ..completely out the blue on a road i knew....we came out unscathed but others were unlucky. ..I literally didn't see it until i was in it.

It seems as if its the older vehicles that pass through the floods cope alot better.
Newer ones have the air intake very low down, to maximise fuel economy.

"Dip your headlights" seems to be the order of the day. My '07 micra air intake is just below the front of the bonnet, so fording is out.

I have watched a lot of these now. Lesson 1 - go another way round if you can. You have no idea what is under the water, no matter what kind of car you are driving. Lesson 2 - go slowly but keep the revs high. Lesson 3 - you might destroy your catalytic converter no matter what you do, and no matter what kind of vehicle you have. Is it worth it? Is it just me? Seems like BMW drivers are most inclined to charge into deep water too fast and taxi drivers seem to know what they are doing.
I agree with you, I past my test in 1979, I've drove most things, including coaches, one thing I learnt was never drive through water, if it's diesel that's the end of the dpf, they cost thousands, but as you probably know, driving standards have gone right down, total carelessness, I would go miles before driving through this

Likely been ok, I’ve gone through a lot of deep water recently in a normal car and got through ok as I go slowly and push the wave in front of the car.

That black Mitsubishi sounds like the transfer box is f*cked! Did he try and change drive halfway through? No way it should have started making that grinding noise going through that ford.
Why are BMW uniquely vulnerable to even shallow water? Do they have super low air intakes or electrics?
It’s more to do with the nut that holds the steering wheel.

Out and about today many roads around here are flooded with 50cm+ of water. Never ceases to amaze me the number of people driving expensive Mercedes and BMWs into floodwater often at speed. And then having driven them in and aqualocked it, they abandon their car in the middle of the road so no-one else can get past either. Perhaps if insurance companies didn't pay out claims for people who drive past Road Closed signs it might focus minds.

Air intake is high up & has a water catcher to protect it for short periods - but it was still lucky.
Has a Void space in the intake tube to catch a small amount of water but only for a short amount time being a idiot

i cant believe how some people attempt to drive though flood water, firstly you can see the depth then lets just bloody floor it.
That first location puzzles me. There is a road bridge (built to replace the ford?) but no one uses it. Presumably it is closed to traffic now, as it can't cope with the weight/amount/size of modern traffic but is listed so can't be removed or replaced?
Looks like a footbridge to me, seems far too narrow for even older and lighter cars.
