    I am a completed "Born Again" Jew. Shortly after giving my life to Christ Satan started his attacks. Having lost money (went from earning enough to pay bills and travel to never knowing if I was going to pay the mortgage), lost the dog I loved (age 10, way too young), and prestige as well, it has only drawn me closer to Him. For God is the true source of Joy, all else is transient.

      Wow. I can relate. Saved in late 2015, from Catholicism as well, during separation then divorce ,lost Oliver, shih tzu pup, house, car everything. However, found Jesus. Now lead a Bible study small group, all by God's grace and plan. Satanic attacks and spiritual warfare pretty quick and consistent since. However, my freedom and joy in Christ is.... indescribable. Jesus, THANK YOU.

    I lost my baby on November 6 this year at only 27 days old. He had trisomy 13 which doctors called "incompatible with life." Doctors told us to abort when we found out at 10 weeks but we carried him to term and he lived glorious 27 days. The journey was so extremely painful but God was present in our suffering and gave us peace. The moments before our son was taken into Jesus' arms was very painful but we sang praises to God with joyful hearts when he joined Jesus. Your song ministered to me during my journey...Thank you!

    "You couldn't escape this joy," he said, describing his mother's joy in the midst of suffering. That's the mystical, transcendent joy of Christianity. It is completely uncircumstantial, and only discoverable at the end of a rainbow of pain.
    The notes below, which don't want to duly ascribe to God his sovereignty over suffering, shows how well-meaning people cannot understand how God turns our "ashes to beauty."
    If God does not control suffering, He controls nothing. Indeed, He does rule over our anguish, not wasting a drop of it, majestically wielding it to bring us to a place of indefatigable joy (Philippians 4:4). The joy she "couldn't escape."

      its funny how protestants say the dont follow a man like catholics but you do you follow Calvin the scary thing is you guys base your theology one person and grow it from there instead of looking at the entire historical church.. for example if I wanted to research about the mayan culture as an example.. would it be fair to base their entire culture off one book without looking at it in its entirety like what they ate, their art, there oral and other written text? it would be ignorant of me to say i understand the entire mayan culture off of one book.. but you protestants do exactly that.. you base your theology off of just the bible alone.. without looking at the entire ancient church and what was agreed upon at all places at all times.. sorry to burst your bubble but there was over 1600 years or so of Christianity before Calvin was even born..

    Thank you for your words today revealing the depth of the inspiration for this song. I recently lost my Mother and my son suddenly without warning. Your words have helped me. The same verse came to me at that time. Your Mother received the word as a deposit in her heart and the word set her free to praise The Lord in her sorrow. The Lord gave her that word in good time to raise up a standard in her heart so that when the sorrow came in to slay her she was not slain. She was able to stand by the Standard of The Word of God in her heart and praise Him with the first deposit of the Lord's peace when her husband passed over. The word that was given to me by the pastor who commemorated my son's death was the same word that the Lord gave me to speak that day at his graveside service. I hope this word brings you comfort as well. “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it produces much grain. heart;" John 12:24 Also this word "The righteous perishes,
    And no man takes it "
    Merciful men are taken away,
    While no one considers
    That the righteous is taken away from evil." ~Isaiah 57:1

    thank you for your story. I am in such pain and scared out of my mind. Lately my faith is being tested and I don;t think I'm passing this now but this song is helping. And I am trying. I am trying to believe that He is real and not just a tale but with each waking minute of my day especially when I sit silently admiring my beautiful daughter all I can think about Is "Why, Why do you give her to me and now you want to take her from me?" I can't stop but think "If you're here to love me and wipe my tears from my sorrow then why?" When I was introduce to this song i was so broken and now after listening to it a million times I can say that I am trying not to be so angry.. Therefor Thank you..

    As a convert to the Catholic church in 2008, I would just encourage you to not believe the lie that Catholics aren't "saved". I've never found so much grace, mercy, forgiveness, and peace as in the Catholic church. Christ is just as much the center of their belief as in any other denomination. (More, in my opinion) Catholics LOVE Christ and have personal relationships with Him.
    To top it off, this song IS the Catholic ideal of embracing suffering AND the answer to Shane-n-shane's "Be Near".

    Though You Slay Me is a song I can relate to on many levels and I'll tell you reading this comment why I can relate in many ways
    This past year on March 10th I was in my worship team class at school,everything was going fine however I started feeling dizzy,breathless and not like myself see I'm normally very cheerful,energized just full of positivity however that feeling hit me I wasn't sure what was going on I felt all shaky since I was singing I had a feeling in my gut to stop before I got worse so I trusted my gut and stopped however since I was all shaky and overwhelmed I felt very bad but I couldn't muster up courage to say to my teacher that I wasn't feeling well now before you say "why did you have to muster up courage?" Let me tell you why: it's because I have ASD or Autism Spectrum Disorder so I'm not too good with eye contact or anything like that ok back to the story,By the time class was over I felt so crushed,my heart ached,I cried and I couldn't raise my head to talk to my friends however in p.e. I remember telling my teacher I wasn't doing so well so I just sat down on the floor crying then I felt a tapping on my shoulder I looked up and I see my friend Frank asking me if I was ok and I wasn't ok so I say "no" and so he and I talked about what could be going on and Frank said "is it okay if I pray for you?" I said "yes" so Frank wrapped his arm around my shoulder and prayed which I appreciated but the feeling struck every day from March 10-March 31 but I felt better all because of one thing and that was prayer
    Though You Slay Me is a very relatable song to me ❤🧡💛💚💙💜💖

He was concieved by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, buried, and dead. He descended into Hell and on the third day He rose again. Well, I'll agree that we shouldn't fight each other, but there are obvious flaws with the catholic church, and protestant churches too! Its corrupt men leading non corrupted, innocent people to a place of hurt, or a state of unbelief, from which they can't come back from, or outright telling them "your sins won't be judge if you don't repent"
      Not saying all Catholics, or all protestants, but it is in both, the reason people are so hard on the catholic church is becuase they have so much sway, and say in the christian world, and they should be pillars of righteousness, and have no corruption. Yet, all churches, usually end up with it, due to power hungry, greedy men.

    I'm with you on the sorrow of parents and loved ones passing from your life. I lost my mom also, and I love the beauty of this song, but I have issues with the doctrinal aspect of the song. The phrases "God gives and God takes away" and "Though you slay me, yet I will trust you" were both spoken by Job, who didn't know the Lord or His character until the end of the book, when God showed up and corrected him. Under the New Covenant we're now under, God doesn't "slay" us, or "take" from us. Jesus makes it clear that it's the devil that comes to kill, steal and destroy, but Jesus came to give us LIFE, and life more abundantly. The idea that God takes from us, or puts us through hard times to test us, isn't in the bible. Trials will come, and God will use them, but it's never Him that puts us through the fire. God wants us to be full of life, joy, peace, and abundance. Be assured that, if there is death or destruction somewhere, it has the fingerprints of the enemy on it. Never God's. Jesus is about good things, not bad things.

      Yes, those scriptures talk about the correction and chastening of the Lord. But NONE of them mean that God is going to kill your loved one, or personally have things taken from your life. The primary way God corrects us is through instruction (Proverbs 4:1, Job 33:16).

    The big controversy for me here is that the song implies God causes all of these things rather than allows them to happen. That is a big distinction.
    Here is the chorus:
    "Though You slay me
    Yet I will praise You
    Though You take from me
    I will bless Your name
    Though You ruin me
    Still I will worship
    Sing a song to the one who's all I need"
    It's the YOU slay, YOU take, YOU ruin, that bothers me. It's very accusatory towards God as the one who causes all of these things rather than Him "allowing" them to happen. God does not cause the evil and pain in this world. That is a result of the curve of sin upon the world. He does allow suffering for the greater good of us and His bigger plan, but He is not the cause of it.

The lyrics and song title of this song can be actually be found in Job 13:15 "Though he slay me, yet I will trust in Him..." which was my devotion for today. I was just wondering if you guys are aware of this verse when you made the song and title? I just found it really amazing that the title of the song exactly matches Jobs words in worship to God in his situation.

    beautiful song, i'm sorry for his loss. although a "calvinist", john piper is an enigma in the sense that although he subscribes to the false teaching of predestination, he has gotten it right on his view of jesus' second coming after the tribulation (post trib), which the bible clearly states will happen (matthew 24:29)

    I can't believe some of these comments from Christians? why must we cut on one another's faith? I don't remember reading anywhere in the Bible where God or Jesus said one faith is greater or better then another.....open your eyes he came into the world to save it not condemn it, judge not less ye be judged. only 1 God and 1 son and neither one of them are posting on the internet. I hope God keeps you all safe and you all have a blessed day..

      He came to save his elect not all.
      There is no God but me,
      There is no way to God except through christ.
      The path is narrow and few enter
      And endlessly throughout scripture you can find this message.
      I might be inclined to ask you what Bible exactly are you reading that you can miss the very essence of the biblical message? Salvation is found through faith in Jesus Christ Alone. I mean that's pretty straight forward.

    • @Btgclothing
      @Btgclothing 5 лет назад

      And please don't mis use scripture if you are going to try and quote it.
      Judge not is referring do not judge unrighteously between one another meaning brothers and sisters in Christ. This had nothing to do with non believers.
      And this also doesn't mean to not judge at all. I recommend reading all of chapter seven to understand the actual context of the scripture you took out of context.
      We are in fact called to judge one another righteously, to examine and if necessary correct one another in wrong doing and false teaching.
      You can find it all throughout scripture that we are called to judge believers and non believers.
      Judging and passing judgment are two completely different things, judging is correcting passing judgement would be contradicting yourself I.e the speck and the plank that would be your next go to.
      This message speaks of passing unrighteous judgement, meaning.
      If I were a thief and then turn and accuse you of stealing and tell you to turn from your ways.
      That would be unrighteous judgement meaning.
      I would need to turn from my way (plank) before I can call you out on your bad deeds (speck)
      Nowhere in scripture while following context will you find it say not to judge,
      We are called to judge and judge righteously.

      I really hope you can understand what I am telling you and take it with the goodness of your being. I know you meant well but you are professing a false teaching that is way out of context.
      You referred to judge not which comes from matt 7:1 but in order to understand the context you must read the whole chapter.
      You cannot pick and choose a single verse to make your own message. You need to take the whole passage that makes that verse what it is intended for.
      Just like when you learn how to read, if you don't know a word, we are taught to read around it that way we learn to understand it, so it is the same with scripture.
      We must read around the verse, every verse so that we may understand its message. Basically don't read one verse and tell yourself it's complete by itself.

      Hi Ben, the thing is that if you read the Bible you will find that with Job specifically talking, God gave permission to the devil so he could take everything away from Job. At the end none is more sovereign that God, and he is aware of everything, the scripture says that even if a sparrow falls he is aware of it. Hope it helps, blessings.

    I do get the point of the song but this vid is still hard to watch. I so often, and this time too, get the feeling that many Christians believe that if we just beg God to do things, what ever happens is his will. That's not the case. If it was so, why do we have promises in the bible about for example healing, and why does it say in 1 Tim that God wants everyone to be saved? How can we read what it says right there, and yet we believe that what ever happens, it's God's will? People die unsaved, does that mean that God didn't want for them to be saved? Absolutely not. "Though you slay me I will still praise you" -- "if you, God, choose to ruin me and my life that's no biggie, I will still praise you". Why do we give God credit for doing stuff that might as well be the works of the enemy?

    • @whitneya7578
      @whitneya7578 6 лет назад

      Totally agree! The thief comes to steal, kill, and destroy but Jesus came that we may have life more abundantly. John 10:10. An abundant life is not a life full of sufferings, sorrows, and sickness. Yes bad things happen because we live in a fallen world and we end up in bad situations because of our poor choices. However, God is good. His true nature is pure goodness. What kind of God would put sickness on someone to “teach them a lesson” or to “glorify him”? No wonder unbelievers don’t want to serve God. If God slays us, takes from us, and ruins us who would want to spend an eternity with Him?
      I had to force myself to listen to the entire song. Completely and utterly unbiblical.

    • @Btgclothing
      @Btgclothing 5 лет назад

      Why is it you believe that you can limit Gods ultimate will? Is it because you believe you have free will? And even if free will was even a thing why would you ever hold yourself or anyone so high as to say Gods will cannot interfere with yours?
      By this you are lower God and exalting yourself.
      Free will isn't in the Bible.

    • @Btgclothing
      @Btgclothing 5 лет назад

      And who are we to say that our judgement or reasoning are above God's?
      Who are you to limit God and what he can do.
      He is God, he cannot do evil for that would be a contradiction with who he is and that cannot be.
      The doctrine of election However is real. in response to you saying that people die unsaved and that's not in his will.
      Free will is not in scripture, you will find it nowhere.
      You will However find it time and time again that God chooses his people, God intervenes and changes people to follow him. You will find it blatantly say in scripture
      None come to the father unless they are drawn by the father. Which means God choses who will follow him.
      We are drawn by the father, we are not drawn to the father by our own admission.
      You will also find that it says very clearly.
      He who has begun a good work in you will bring it to completion, meaning he drew you in, he is the reason for your faith and growth in him and that ultimately, he will bring you to saving grace through faith alone.
      This also means that the only assurance that anyone can have that they are truly saved is that their search for absolute truth in Christ never fade away. If you walk away from the faith it simply means we can have absolute assurance that you were never saved in the first place. Because he will see to it personally that you will be saved and nothing can disrupt that.
      Which all sums up to big bad will of man has no authority or power over God.

    • @Btgclothing
      @Btgclothing 5 лет назад

      Sorry not trying to blow it up, I hope what I am saying reaches you and you truly seek the truth. Because I see that you are missing very key point to doctrine that are very vital to salvation and understanding what the Bible actually teaches.
      But that aside I want to comment about the song. They are speaking metaphorically about ruin and slay me, as in long suffering, trials and tribulations, loss of love ones, heartache, etc.
      These men are still alive, I recommend watching their explination on the song so you can understand the song before making any more misguided assumptions like many do. Go to the source.
      But when you understand scripture better a song like this is very clear and is clear what to take literal and metaphorically. (discernment)
      Hope truly all this helps

    • @bramshih

      There seems to be some confusion about Shane's mention that his mother was once Catholic then became a believer.
      To say straightforwardly in clarifying the truth... Biblically, a person cannot be a Catholic and simultaneously believe in Jesus Christ. It's clear that a Christian believes that the Bible is absolute truth, the word of God. Anyone who does not believe such cannot possibly be a Christian. Catholics do not believe what the Bible says.
      There are many people who say they are Christians, and not just Catholics but non-Catholics also, but Jesus said it plainly that you'll know a tree by its fruit.
      Catholics believe Mary to be perfect and born without sin, deifying her and making her a goddess. They idolize angels and saints and pray to them. They exalt the pope to be God, and the pope has a "throne" decorated with two angel statues. Biblically, only God is on the mercy seat, and any idolatry is sin. They think that Jesus is fully God and fully "human" (as in a created being), which is heresy. Jesus is fully God and not "human". The Bible is very clear that the Word became flesh and that Jesus took on the likeness and appearance of man, but He is not a human creation.

      bram shih Your theology is absolutely wrong on the point of the Deity of Christ, and His humanity. Be careful. What you said destroys the affirmed doctrine of the Penal Substitutionary Atonement of Jesus Christ. To deny the humanity of Jesus is heresy in all reality; and without it we DO NOT HAVE ATONEMENT for our sins. I'm not going to type further on this, I just cringed after reading your comment. In love, repent--and also understand, that I am also still learning--but I know with certainty that you have spoken error. The church affirms that Jesus Christ is 100% God, all while simultaneously being 100% human. As a side note, I once heard it preached that Christ is superior to us, speaking of His humanity alone, because He has no sin nature--which makes Him acceptable as our High Priest, and substitute/ propitiation for our sins (study in HEBREWS). It's been said that His human likeness can be thought of as being identical to Adam's, in the garden, before the fall of mankind--Hence, He is the Second, or Last Adam.

    • @bramshih
      @bramshih 9 лет назад +1

      Nigel Clark Well, the fact that you admitted you were still learning brings to question the truthfulness of your claim that you know with certainty that I had spoken error.... But anyway, I do want to thank you to bringing this up because my words may have been unclear and not completely illustrating my point (and hence in error). I do apologize if my words lead to confusion in any way.
      You see, I cringe at the word 'human' because of certain meanings people imply (whether knowingly or not) when they use the word 'human'.
      If your definition of human includes being a created being, then Jesus was NOT human. And saying Jesus was human would be heresy. By saying Jesus is 100% God and 100% human, you also are implying that at some point in time He was created. He was NOT created; He was born (having existed eternally). There is a very serious difference.
      If you define human otherwise, as a being with spirit, soul, and body/flesh, with intellect, emotion, and ability to choose (NOT necessarily created), then I wholeheartedly say that Jesus is 100% God and 100% human.
      As the sinful people that we are, we ALWAYS have misconceptions in our minds when we hear certain words or say certain words. That's why I tried to choose my words very carefully, accurate as I am capable. Of course, the Bible refers to Jesus as a Man, but He's a Man, and not a 'man'. Hopefully, I'm being clear... lol.
      Thank you. I appreciate your comment!

      bram shih This is my humble attempt to defend the "Hypostatic Union." I affirm that Jesus has always existed, as God....Jesus has no beginning, and He has no end. But, we must be careful, because by being sent by the Father, Jesus did enter into His own creation, through His miraculous conception--which is the "Incarnation." God, becoming man--and the only pure human being to ever walk the planet. Jesus, the God-man. These are truths that the early church fathers affirmed in councils long before you and I were born. Thousands of years ago. If anyone denies that Christ is fully God, all while being fully man, that is error. Hopefully, I'm being clear too--if not, please check the link from John Piper's "Desiring God" website for further clarification. Thanks for this dialogue! Let's all aim to grow into a more mature understanding of the Savior!

      Nigel Clark I think you said that clearly, and I completely agree. It was just that I was trying to be careful to NOT say that Jesus is creation in any way. I should edit my original comment to clarify... I didn't say it clearly at first, and that was my spoken error. I appreciate your boldness! This was definitely a nice dialogue.
