It’s time! It’s been a while since we’ve been bitten by the van life bug, and after spending the summer exploring Europe in our own home on wheels, it’s now time to test out van life elsewhere… namely Australia! We’ve rented a MONSTER of a motorhome, completely decked out with everything you could want on the road… bathroom, AIRCON (yes, pure luxury in the Australian heat) and enough space to sleep a whole family.
We venture out of Sydney city centre, and manage to manoeuvre our way to a beautiful seaside place called Manly. As we deck out for the next few days by buying all the food and snacks, we lose track of time and almost end up locked outside our campsite. Things quickly unravel as the storm comes in, and we realise some issues with the motorhome… this is an interesting start to van life Australia! 😍 We wouldn’t have it any other way, though!

In my early days in Sydney I bought an 18yo Kombi camper van and went up to Blue Lagoon most weekends. It was a lot different then tho. Just a patch of grass by the beach, no houses, no power or showers and a 'long drop' toilet. Such fun. Endend up spending 2 years travelling around Australia in that van. I was in Sydney for the 2000 Olympics with the ADF and we had to be relieving crews on security detail at all ours in all locations. I'd jump in the passenger seat of a camouflaged rover as a search commander and tell my driver to get us there. We got lost, did illegal U-turns drove in the wrong direction sometimes but hell, we got there on time. Albeit in military vehicles. Well that was just my crew but driving anywhere in Sydney is a challenge when you are not use to it. I backed my driver all the way because it was insane...

  • @Khanvondog
    @Khanvondog 10 месяцев назад +1

OK, I get that you wanted to see Manly, but you totally should have done that as a short ferry or bus excursion, while you were based at Darling Harbour. As you no doubt discovered, the local streets around Manly are fairly tight and congested - not a fun experience in a large camper, and even harder to find a parking space you can fit into.
As others have already commented, you drive on the left, but you also park on the left (facing the same direction as the nearest traffic lane). Obviously, there are different rules for one-way streets and centre-street parking (which you might encounter as you get further away from major cities). Street-side 'angle parking' spaces are usually restricted to vehicles under 6m length. Rear-to-kerb is usual, but there are some exceptions where nose-to-kerb is specified (and signposted).
Yes, 2P means 2 hour parking within the designated times (if signed), with no restriction outside those times.
Mostly it's just common sense, but don't be afraid to ask a local if you're not sure, >95% of Aussies are friendly and happy to help. Enjoy your time here :)

Fantastic episode. A road trip sounds a fun and logical choice for having a look around. Just be careful about how you park. It’s not like the UK rules. I don’t think you can park on the right hand side of the road facing oncoming traffic (like you were going to before you saw the no parking signs in Manly). Park on the left side of the road that faces the direction you drive. Looking forward to your next vlog.😊

Dear Dylan and Adriana, Have fun with your travel van guys. If you're in the Sydney area visit the Blue Mountains, it's not too far away. If you go to Wollongong on the train you can stop by some stations closer to Wollongong and walk down to the nearest beach which are all deserted and just totally beautiful. Always be careful of the sun/heat in Oz in summer time, luckily the Sydney area is not as hot as say Melbourne. It usually never exceeds 35oC or so whereas Melbourne can easily reach 43oC. If you travel some distance northwards then as you get closer to Brisbane you can pop by Byron Bay which is maybe the most popular small town in Australia. It used to be super hippy, in fact that whole area was, e.g. Lismore which is also famous for the hippy lifestyle (I remember really crazy rave parties there), it's also famous for its floods with many houses on stilts. You will then also be close to the Gold Coast which is super touristy with lots of high rises.
In Sydney you should also take a ferry from the Rocks to the other side, e.g. Mosman and the Northern Beaches which looks just like Hawaii. By the way Australia is huge with Sydney to Brisbane is at least 1000 km away, as is Melbourne, a good 11 hr drive. You'll see that the further north you go the more hippy it gets. When in Australia make sure to totally immerse yourself in the super relaxed way that Australians live, the more country you get the more relaxed (think California but even more relaxed and chill). North of Brisbane you can find Airlie beach, a famous tourist destination as well as the Wittsunday Islands which are very beautiful. Also, the further north you go the more humid it gets but the temperature goes down so that whereas it might be 40oC in Melbourne it'll only be about 30oC in the far north. But, it will be 90% humidity and 30oC every day of the year (very close to the equator).
You mentioned Manly beach, you will find that there are many thousands of beaches in Oz but most of them will be deserted which is wonderful. Just watch out for Crocodiles in the north, especially Queensland and the Northern Territory. Also north of Brisbane be careful of swimming in the ocean since they are filled with some nasty jelly fish which can kill you. If you're on the islands off the coast you won't find them there. You will need to swim inside special nets to keep them out.
Enjoy the food in Oz, all fruit and veges will be big and juicy and very natural. Food is very good in Oz. Also try out fish and chips in Oz, but don't get the usual, you can get crumbed and grilled which are very good much healthier than the fried one. Keep in mind that everything is now very expensive in Oz and always put on sunscreen as the sun is very powerful in Oz.
There's no limit to what you can do is Oz, even say work on a outback farm for example. Definitely check out Melbourne, I went to Monash University there, as well as Tasmania, e.g. Launceston and Hobart, sleepy little towns but very charming. See the Gorge in Launceston, visit small farms which have nice restaurants attached to them. Check out some zoos in Oz and see Koalas, crocs, goannas, kangaroos, emus, maybe a Cassowary which live in Queensland (take care can be dangerous), maybe see a platypus which live in streams in Tasmania mostly.
If you have the chance try to live it, really live it by meeting lots of people in real situations not just tourist places. To get a feel for it read the well known book by Bruce Chatwin called "The Songlines", he lived with Aborigines as well as countryside Aussies. An amazing book.
    Have fun !

@@2Passports1Dream There’s a youtuber in Illinois, iWrocker, and he was sent some Bundaberg sodas by a fan. He raved about them, did some research on Bundaberg and shared it on his channel. A few weeks later, he got another parcel from Australia, from Bundaberg, of all places. The soda company had sent him a special edition presentation boxed set of flavours and info about the company, and he was overwhelmed! He’s an honorary Aussie as far as we’re all concerned!

Guys. Great Vlog. That gate thing is soooo Australian. The other day we got in late at Lennox Head and pulled over in the parking area at the gate. The code they texted us didn't work. Managed eventually to get someone on the emergency number to be told that the van needed to be on the pressure plate for the boom to open. I love my country but sometimes my countrymen disappoint me. Glad you could laugh it off, also glad you want to move to my hometown 😊

I am not sure I would be keen to drive on the opposite side of the road that I am use too. FYI there are plenty of spots that you can stop that are free camping as long as you are in a self contained vehicle like you have. Unless it is different in Sydney. I am not sure where people find the spots though.

There are actually quite a few places that you can camp for free in NSW. Some people plan their road trips so that they only ever stop in free sites. A quick search online should give you some options. I believe that there's even a book that lists them, but I can't tell you what it's called. But the online stuff would be a good starting point 🙂

You cannot park along a street on the side of oncoming traffic. You have to park on the side of the street which traffic is passing in the direction you are parked. I know you can in the UK but it's illegal in Australia. When there is line marking forbidding parking on a road, it will be along the side of the road, not between parked cars and passing traffic.
That looks like a big mobile home.
