Very interesting video, luv when you transition to the past. I remeber the waltzer that was owned by Stanly John Cubbins, From 1983 i traveled with that very waltzer for about 3 years mainly around the fylde area after it was removed form the winter gardens and spent some years on bonny street where the market is now. Fun and much better days then. Thank you for the fabulous trip down what i can only discribe as wonder years of my youth. GREAT BIG THANK YOU.
This series just keeps me more surprised each time you produce another episode, Darren. How much has changed from the big wheel being there to the fairground, and how it's ended up today. Stunning! Many thanks, again.
I had completely forgotten about the funfair in the Olypia building but I can now remember it being very quiet and even wondered as a child how it could compete with the Pleasure Beach just down the road. Remember, this was when you could stroll through the Pleasure Beach and just pay for individual rides. Great series of videos.
You really need a "road map" to navigate that basement, as it's a maze of nooks and crannies. Darren, what you're doing for Winter Gardens is similar to what Martin Zero did for the River Medlock. Thanks to AdventureMe for another fine watch. "Rollercoaster?"
My uncle lived in Blackpool for many years and for a time worked as an electrical engineer for the fair in the Olympia Hall. He told me about those tunnels and said he once got lost down there trying to find a certain appliance room. With no radio's or mobile phones he apparently wondered around for about an hour getting increasingly disorientated before eventually finding his way back out. 😆
Wot superb videos....this one really took me back....the balcony with rides.....in the round corner of Coronation street/Adelaide Street...a woman sold scarves and lace etc...she did that into the 1980's well into old-age...Thanks for Winter Gardens series !!!!!
I remember going to an Ideal Homes style exhibition in the Olympia in the 1960s. It is where I saw my first colour TV. In the 1970s I attended the Hairdresser's Fair that was opened by Anne Kirkbride who played Deirdre Barlow in Coronation St and Ken Farrington who played Billy Walker. In 2014 the Olympia was home to the amazing Illuminasia Exhibition. I would love to see that return with a different theme.
Spine tingling as my childhood memories of the W/Gs came flooding back, what a stunningly beautiful building. Thank you so much for uploading these magnificent videos 👌👌👌
Growing up going to Blackpool on holiday from the 1970s you are showing me things about the Winter gardens I never knew. I can't wait to see the rest of this series thank you very much 👍👍
Excelent. My Mum worked there up to the mid 90s and used to tell me about the abandoned theatre and old arcade machines and hidden corridors. NIce to see this. Thanks.
Some lovely history and great info. I love seeing the old pictures overlayed to see how it originally looked thanks again Darren and look forward to the next video.
This place will always be Professor Peabody's to me, absolutely loved it every time my parents brought me to Blackpool for our annual family holiday. Ran myself ragged for hours, I think the only time I stopped was when the magic show was on or I was forced to sit down and have a drink! 😂
Must admit hope they have a great fire detection system. With those nook’s and crannies who knows what many smoulder or spread unseen before being found out
Fascinating video thank you, spent many happy hours in the Olympia in the ‘60’s. Also saw Donald Campbell’s Bluebird on the balcony. They used to have all sorts of exhibitions in there, and down the Adelaide street side there used to be lots of pinball machines.
Thanks Darren it was just as I remember it from the photos you posted in the video. It even had a sign for the trampolines on the balcony in one of them. Looking forward to the next instalment. Cheers👍
This is a great video Darren, brings back so many memories for me, was talking about it a few weeks ago with my second cousin, who is in South Africa, we used to go as 7 & 8 year olds on our own, we were safe in the 60s, used the coronation st n adalaid St dome entrance, can see it in my minds eye all the rides were infront of you as u went in and at the far right there was the ghost train, also went in with my eldest ,when she was a kid when it was peebodys to spend a good hour or so,can't wait for the next instalment.
Only ever been to Blackpool once in my life! Seems I missed out ! That building is like a rabbit warren ! Some beautiful features on the walls. Such a shame most of the original features are hid. Such an interesting place.
Thank you that was incredibly interesting so much space in the building that’s not used and I think I liked the main room with all the windows visible than just a black room as it is now
Loved this video as a child I spent a lot of my time when on holiday in Blackpool in the winter gardens . And the Olympia in the 70s with all its rides and attractions was my favourite place off all . I particularly Remember a track ride up stairs in the Olympia that I loved and I’ve always wanted to see pictures of how it used to be and what it’s like today . Brings back fantastic memories of holidays in Blackpool. Thanks a lot
Hi Darren, great tour again. I have to admit I didn't know a lot about the WG's as we mostly stayed in St.Anne's on holidays. Then usually to BPbeach and the prom/piers. Living in Batley it was equidistant to Bridlington etc and Lancs coast, east cost usually won as there was the Pennines to navigate (no M62 in those days 🙄) well enough with the nostalgia 😎 Cheers DougT in Mancs
Why couldn't they leave the building as it was? It was stunning. Then again they have demolished quite a few beautiful buildings. Another excellent video, I was glued to it, can't wait for the next instalment 🙂❤
Thank you for showing olympia fairground.been wanting to see for ages. Great memories. One day can you show gardens outside pleasure beach . Cafe teapot not the one on the beach but near the white rock gardens now think car park and crazy golf. Many thanks
Been loving your Winter Gardens videos. As a kid in the late 70’s to mid 80’s my family would usually have a weeks holiday in Blackpool and we spent a lot of time in WG. Professor Peabody’s brought back some memories and my dad would always drag us to whatever show was on at night (usually something like Little & Large or Cannon & Ball). I do remember one season the arena (or could have been the ballroom) had live entertainment at the evening and we saw Black Lace performing there 😂

Enjoying your great videos. There’s a company in Blackpool which occasionally runs ghost tours of the Winter Gardens. I was due to go on one but was ill & unable to join it. I’m sure it’d be another fascinating insight to the incredible building. I seem to remember being told the cars from the old big wheel, when it was taken down, became bus shelters dotted around Blackpool.

As teenagers wee snook through a door we shouldn't of, We found a massive long tunnel which was pitch black wet and damp, We turned back and ended up inside a small room after some climbing and it had a fully stocked bar but about 3" of dust the drink were all 60/70s drinks. We later found offices and such not touched since surely the war times, They were falling to pieces.. They didn't have a door from what i remember we had to climb something we shouldn't off to get to them.. Still wish to go back and do it again,

I'm sure I remember a car show in Olympia. I've long thought the best thing they could do with Olympia, given how grotty it always was (and I'm not sure painting most of the interior walls black, as in your video really makes it much less grotty) is to knock it down and restore some gardens or other open space there. Curious that they were setting it up for what looked like a conference, when they've just built the new WG conference facilities at the opposite corner of the site.

I remember the building which now houses Sea Life was similar. It had a ghost train and waltzer upstairs, but always really quiet.
I think you have nearly found the famous tunnel which ran all the way to The Tower. That will be amazing to film.

It's all quite fresh now. But it was run down many years back.
