I will be buying this set, I've not come across any other box sets so lovingly ad thoughtfully curated as these and it's an absolute pleasure to sit down with the books and go through the discs track by track as I read. John may be gone now, but through these sets it's clear that Yoko remains his good and decent wife ever onwards.
I've always enjoyed this album for what reason ever. There are albums which I would rate much higher but I hardly play them. I can listen to mind games almost anytime.
I feel the same way. I can’t really get through plastic Ono band. I’ve tried so many times over the years, but I just can’t.
@@jupitermadcatplastic Ono Band is next level though
@@hw343434 What do you mean by next level? POB no doubt reflects what John was trying to say at that time but musically he failed to deliver, IMHO. As @jupitermadcat seems to imply, POB is a slog of an album and I too just can't sit down and listen to it all the way through. It is too depressing and even annoying. I listen to music to be uplifted and entertained, not hit over the head with someone else's anguish. POB is just not a fun listen and if I have to work to reach some sort of "next level" to appreciate it, then POB, as music, has lost me already. For sheer listening pleasure, Mind Games beats Plastic Ono Band every day and twice on Sunday. And with the mix cleaned up in the new release, it becomes even more my favorite Lennon solo effort by far.
That is pretty cool, a boxset with some thought put into it.
I think Lennon cutting off from England and old friends starved his creativity after Plastic Ono band and Imagine.
I think that Lennon left England for a number of reasons 1st , constant hassle from the law and media 2nd , tax 3rd , the other Beatles ( he’d had enough) ✌️❤️
I read somewhere once, I think it was his sister, John was planning on returning to UK (perhaps only for a visit) because a part of him really missed it 😢
@@growlerthe2nd712 To become a recluse watching TV n a New York apartment.
Plastic Ono Band and Imagine were the only two Lennon solo records that received much praise and attention back in the 90s. It is a bit surprising that his entire solo catalogue is now being given the same reverence.
@@growlerthe2nd712 Wasn't it because that's where Yoko wanted to be? Maybe I've misremembered that though.
I like your intelligent honesty ! It’s a magical box set for sure, clever little nuances, Sean obviously has put a great deal of thought into it, which i feel makes this a beautiful treasure ? I must admit Mind Games was the first album i ever bought, perhaps i am nostalgically subjective, but i honestly thought it was always underrated ? It’s original mix was bit Specter esque which muddied the sound production ? From what i have heard so far I really think Sean has got a brilliant new mix which if john had been more self confident at the time would show case these songs better ? John for some reason seems to have become very insecure in 1973 ? I think Sean though has found Johns mojo here on this mix ? Lovely review thank you 🙏
I must admit I'm surprised by how many people are currently acting like this is a masterpiece. Across the last 30 plus years of being a Beatles/Lennon fan, I've rarely heard anyone rave about this record or even mention it all that much. Strange how people get so carried away by anything new and shiny...
Walls And Bridges is what I think was his best solo work from top to bottom.
@@TheDivineFeminine16 Agreed... Walls And Bridges 💜
(and the fun gatefold album cover)
@@TheDivineFeminine16 "Walls And Bridges" will make for a much better box set.
I don't think any of the songs on "Mind Games" are necessarily bad, there's just a lot of only okay or so-so ones.
Walls and Bridges has some truly brilliant moments...
I just opened my 2- cd version, and was baffled by the '90' readout on my player. I let most of the tracks after 12 play in silence,!didn't make it to the end though...
Thank you for sharing!
🙏❤🌹 John 🌹❤🙏
Since 1963 I've been an obsseed, massive beatles fan.. Of lennon too.... They have been a huge part of my life. But if something isn't very good I say so and imo Mind Games is very poor indeed. Maybe because it is so they have to include all this frivolous bullshit. I'll stream the music, or small bits of it. The rest of that meaningless crap they can keep.
It is $167 in the US - kind of high. Maybe I'd spend that much for Plastic Ono Band or Imagine, but I don't think I like this one enough for that price.
$106 at import cds
Hidden content that you need UV light for. Very cool. Of course this is coming from a guy that turns on his lava lamp when I crank up my music system. Love having content you have to buy and research to appreciate. You have to work for it. The 60s and 70’s live. Peace, love and music.
I wonder what the deluxe Two Virgins will look like.
You'll be able to see John and Yoko with their clothes on if you shine a UV light on it.
@@QuesoWatt🤢 No thanks. What true nightmares are made of !...
Are you going to review wings one hand clapping?
Yes I just ordered the box set just a couple days ago. I wanted to ask you do you know once you order the box set Amazon they don't take the money out of your account until the item is sent is that correct? I'm asking you or anybody in the comments. Thank you for the video.
They take the money once the product is sent.
@@scapinapolotska1215Ok thanks.
@@scapinapolotska1215 Ok thank you.
What follows is an invidious comparison, but I'm going to make it anyway:
The thought that has gone in to producing this "gift that keeps on giving" puts the bare bones production values applied to the packaging of Paul's recent "One Hand Clapping" album (the music's generally great BTW) to shame. Like you, I'm not a fan of Mind Games but I take my hat off to the Lennon estate for the way they so generously cram their products full to the brim.
It WAS an album by a cultural icon and the greatest rock artist of all time, now it’s a game and a money grab. Some people have no shame, but they do have tons of money! To quote your husband and your Father, How do you sleep?
Not my favourite Lennon album
But why oh why do we need a torch to find hidden tracks that don’t play on all players. This is mince
Wouldnt have this Expensive load of Smutter for Nothing
Mediocre album rescued by all sorts of fluff to hide its obvious flaws . Sorry was crap then crap now
Come on let's just be honest here. This album is being put out to add even more millions of dollars 💵 to Yoko Onos already massive fortune !! 💰
Haha , you’re so articulate you use the word crap . A bad word then a bad now ..thanks boomer .
But as a McCartney album...it would be near the top
I think I'm going to skip this cash-grab !!!!!
I have the lowly 2CD version on preorder. I keep toying with the idea of cancelling and going for this box set instead, but at the moment, the angel on my left shoulder telling me that I probably won't listen to most of the extras more than once is shouting down the devil on my right shoulder telling me to buy it...
The previous "evolution" mixes I've only listened to once, and I'm a bit like you. I don't care much for elements mixes, but I do like outtakes and raw mixes.
Some interesting but silly Easter eggs that ultimately do nothing to deter from the fact that this is an average at best album that didn’t need an over the top super deluxe edition
It is a fair point, but there's what the album packaging needs and then there's shifting units and I suspect that the clever way they've positioned this is helping to sell shedloads.
It’s an album with great songwriting, some great performances but mired by mixing/production details. Clean those up and the songs shine like they never did on the original mix. That’s what it’s about more than the gimmicks
I'm not a Beatles fan but I watched a documentary about Lennon and it drove me to tears.
the handprints are really more reminiscent of George Harrison’s album “Living In The Material World” which came out at the same time.. which leaves me a bit puzzled why the Lennon estate would choose something more associated with George on this box…🤔
Cool how John and Yoko's birth signs are illuminated on those discs.
Are You For Real
@@alfching2499 Gee, I don't know. Are you?
Have to agree it's not a very good album. 3 maybe 4 tracks are good all the rest is whinging over Yoko, Yuk no thanks
Extra text? Read all about it.
Mediocre album. After Plastic Ono Band and Imagine, John began to falter. The follow up to Mind Games, Walls And Bridges, has more spark, although not comparable with those earliér two. It would nevertheless be interesting to hear some different Mind Games mixes. The production was never the biggest shortcoming - it was a lack of commitment from John, but the aor feel certainly didn't help. Although there was the odd worthwhile song, the album really does come down to the brilliance of the title track.
I don’t know I guess I’m in the minority. This is my favorite John Lennon album, but do I want this box? Will I listen to this box a lot? Probably not I’ll listen to the whole thing once and put it on the shelf with the rest of my box sets that I don’t listen to all the time yeah.
Looks like they are playing Mind Games
The Boxset fantastic with a lot more thought into it than the previous box sets, and Mind Games is my favorite Lennon album. I wish the hidden tracks were easier to access. I’ve an ordinary CD player and so far unable to access any of them and from what I’ve heard I can’t unless I have the display of names which I don’t. But I’m still hoping…
Didn't answer telephone calls , telegrams and letters. and never made phone calls to friends or family, he cut off.
Mind Games is a great title track though!
which are the titles of the hidden tracks ?
Where does it read: "Paul is dead." ?
I buried Paul
Rock and roll p and im the greatest shud be on 2 cd version..crazy if not.....
Mind Games... very clever. Would love something similar with a deluxe Enigma reissue.
I understand that finding the hidden tracks is quite an undertaking and looks like fun, and the book appears to be glorious. I'm writing this 7 days after you posted this video, so I'm sure you've explored the hidden track mysteries. Anyway, a splendid time is guaranteed for all!
Oh dear, the way that book was manhandled made my skin crawl! Otherwise, video as good as always!
I have a Music for Pleasure budget reissue of Mind Games that cost me £4, which is probably the most I'll ever spend on this record. Fair to say I won't be buying this box, which comes across to me as tat for fans with too much disposable cash.
I have its twin - the MfP version of his "Rock 'n' Roll" album (about which I feel the same as you do about "Mind Games"). Apropos of nowt, I think Floyds' "Relics" got an MfP release too.
@Robutube1 You're right, it did! It's always really odd to see those horrible looking red and black MfP labels on an album by a major artist like PF or Lennon.
Any extra tracks from the much overrated average songwriter that is John Lennon I would consider a punishment as opposed to a bonus.
Overrated... that's rich! You win the internet prize today. It's interesting that the great songwriters all over the globe consider Lennon and McCartney the greatest song writers of our time - yet you, who may not be a song writer (if you are, it's note worthy that I've never heard of you) consider him to be average. You can have your tastes, and don't have to like him, however there is no denying Lennon's greatness.
@@dwaynejessome1728 No one is denying his success and reputation. My opinion is that he’s average and I don’t like his music or his voice at all. You crack on pal. And it does not follow that just because lots of artists like him that I should too. Who do you not like?
@@smalltown2223so why are you here then? A bit odd that you’d even bother clicking on this video!
