    From my personal experience of boat yard work and maintenance i completely agree with your decisions to leave Ken the space and time to crack on though the massive jobs list. When I'm working on my boat i prefer my wife to be elsewhere as she doesn't have the practical enginnering skill's and as anyone knows working on one small part of the boat requires almost everything to be moved and mostly it'll end up looking like a total bomb site. Right decision IMO. 👌

    Hi guys, thanks for the update. In our eight years of cruising on Sueno Azul (SM#39), we met many cruising couples, and they were always the best of friends because their lifestyle meant they had developed respect for each other and trust in their partner. You came through this harrowing dismantling with flying colours - congratulations! Our cruising days are over now, due to health concerns and our boat is up for sale, but we have fond memories of the fellowship of other cruisers we have met. Best wishes for the future. P.S. I’m surprised that Amel doesn’t have a few Super Maramu masts available - they seem to keep a decent back catalog of other spares.

    Thank you both for fhe update. Good to see you are taking a break after this ordeal.
    And, fully understand you're taking all statements prior to final statement (and payment!) from the insurance, very careful. As an Amel skipper, I'll be happy to learn from this when the time is right!
    Good luck with retrieving the data from the computer.
    Fair winds!

    After being in the merchant marine as an marine diesel engineer I learnt one thing of all the oceans in the world the most frightening one is the Atlantic. It has more mood swings than any Female on earth one moment cool and calm and the next ferocious and demanding and if she is in the mood she will take everything you have with interest. When rounding the Cape of Good Hope with a +500 000 metric ton (boat and cargo) with over 95000 BHP ore carrier it felt sometimes when you hit the large swells at the confluence of the two oceans as if the carrier stopped and then shuddered then continued in its path. towards Japan. that is the might of the Atlantic. I saw during that time large ships with the bows torn off by the swells and waves and large tankers broken in half by the power of that ocean. Kudos to both you and your wife for keeping "calm" in that situation when the masts decided that they are retiring from operation (sue the mast union for allowing this strike without prior notice) and for safely bring the boat and its broken masts back to safety Hope she is repaired soon and you will be able to share your joys with her. The missus needed the break enjoy relax and recover so that you can be strong for him when he needs you again.

      @SailingAquarius  4 месяца назад +2

      After the insurance claim is settled, we plan to share this information in the video. I noticed that you have a few videos uploaded and may have aspirations of making it big on RUclips. However, do you realistically think we can generate even 10% of the funds needed for repairs? We are not like La Vagabonde or Delos and can't even generate enough for the regular monthly expenses of maintaining the boat...

    If there were no visible issues with the shrouds, stays and chainplates, then perhaps something failed with the “In mast furling system” that caused the mast to fail.
    From SV Mothership - Amel Super Maramu RUclips Channel
    “Amel Super Maramu's have many electric winches and furlers and after 20+ years of service, ours needed some serious attention. A nasty crunching sound emanating from the manual/emergency furler in the main mast meant we had to drop anchor on a sail up the east coast of Spain to take a look. After detaching it from the electric furler and foil I dismantled it to find a broken tapered bearing and some sorry looking oil/lip seals.”

    • @SailingAquarius
      @SailingAquarius  4 месяца назад +1

      20+ years of service for sure haven't benefited any boat owner. After the insurance is settled, we will share our findings as well.

WeSail, Parlay Revival, Gone with the Wynns, Sailing Ruby Rose are all in the west pacific near-ish you. That would be super cool too. Spend a month on one of those boats would make the time go by while Aquarius is getting fixed and be lots of fun.

      @@SailingAquarius Fun example, when my engine broke in the Göta Canal here in Sweden, I realized though that I had the wind perfectly, so I could just unfurl the headsail and slowly sail to the next lock. However, when I did that, the lift broke and the sail came crashing down. So while rescuing that and trying to get the main up downwind, an effing elk jumped into the water and started swimming across the canal. It shortly turned back though, probably because of all the screaming on the boat. So something happened and immidiately something else made it worse. I suppose the elk was thrown in there by some kind of universal justice to sort of compensate for all the bad stuff. Either way, me and my daughter got a really crazy memory. :-)

    There are so many small, judgmental people making mean-spirited comments about Zivile that add nothing of value to the conversation - people who probably never crossed an ocean, much less having to deal with a life threatening incident such as a dismasting or spent much time in a boat yard. I suggest all of those people try living on a boat up in air under the hot sun with no rigging to hang an awning on for shade in a dusty boat yard.
    Kudos to Ken and Zivile for handling a terrible situation about as well as anyone could and for keeping us up-to-date.

      @grahamatsea3575 4 месяца назад +1

      Well I disagree. Boat yards can be horrid dusty places and unless you are doing jobs that can occupy both parties actively then it's best to let Ken get on with the project managing of the rebuild. This project isn't like antifouling or upgrading a varnish where both parties can be actively involved....it's an engineering project management job and that's clearly Ken's expertise. My wife isn't engineering minded and to be honest I prefer doing many jobs on my own without the distractions of meals , tidying up, keeping everything in order etc etc ..... I literally can work and sleep in chaos when necessary, something my wife would not enjoy at all.

    Bottom line is, Insurance companies never like paying any claim and will make you prove, wait and prove again before paying. I have no idea at that the replacement cost would even come close to, for a complete mast(s) and rigging. Not to mention all the equipment lost on the mast. Then you factor in the experience of being de-masted, and if you can't figure out why it happened, every time your sailing, that thought is there. Yikes, goodluck...John

      @@SailingAquarius My dear Zivil, you and your cowboy Mr. Ken are nice, we are also united by a kind of socio-cultural symbiosis that other American countries do not have, in fact my greetings have always been affectionate and full of energy. What is the trauma? After 7 years you haven't realized that you are in a hostile environment? In life there is no dream that has an ending that is good or bad, EVERYTHING depends on our attitude towards challenges, happiness does not depend on circumstances, it depends on our attitude towards each difficulty, my previous note was of encouragement, but I say more, you have a wonderful motheralive and you have a very gentle and dedicated partner, you are a woman full of life and dreams, if something ends, something else will always begin. Life is NOT meant to be regretted, but to be lived. Mr. Ken has one oar and you have another, it is time to row and with force, I am surprised every day by the glass world that humanity builds, one blow and everyone attacks in terror.
      We must leave the state of comfort, it is by leaving that state where life has meaning. I'm sorry to tell you now that I'm on Cowboy Ken's side.

We do not ask you to buy mats or masts, only to inform us if you might know of any available. We have insurance for that. And if you had a RUclips channel and/or had any idea how much a mast costs, let alone 2 of them you would know that’s quite an impossible task.
      Now let’s talk about our audacity of “drinking champagne” after we completed the circumnavigation… you know what - nevermind ;)

      Nothing like YT folks asking working stiffs for money so they can vacation while you work for it back home. While in Bali no less. smh.

    When the going gets tough the wife gets going. Leaves the tough stuff to the husband. I thought in this modern world couples should sort the problems out together. Hey ho.

      Over the 7 years of circumnavigating the world there were quite a few scary and tuff situations. Nobody left anyone. Now boat is on a hard - no danger and lots of waiting dealing with various providers and insurance. Living on a hard is tuff check our video “a day in life in a boatyard”. In this modern world couples sort the problems out together between themselves

      @SailingAquarius Somebody who has been watching your channel since you guys bought your floating home. I remember the previous owners showing you how to sail her. When your vessel was in Trinidad. That's who I am...🙃

      After 7 years of living in close quarters and going through traumatic experience needs something different... But I'm sure you and your wife have different mutual agreements in your family and that's ok too - there's something for everyone. Zivile
