    !!! If there's one sailboat in the ocean I would never think would face such a situation, this boat was Aquarius. Well, life surprises us! Nice to you're both fine, already found help on the way and it seems will do it fine to a port. Please, after you arrive and are well explain to us what happened, what you believe was the cause of the failure, ok? Didi you had the rigging checked after Socotra?
    Wish you calm seas, a steady favorable current and all my best positive thoughts! Hope to hear good news from you soon! Be patient, I'm sure you'll do it!

    I woke up to see this video and cannot believe the unfortunate bad luck to lose one mast let alone two masts. 😮 However, the strength of Amels deck, the very long range of its motor and fuel tank mixed with your intelligences will save you both. I am so glad you were prepared with the internet, radio and your skillset to find help resources in the vast ocean. I wish you both the best of luck. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

    What an incredibly brave and positive video! Ken - you have done amazing work getting your electronics running and making the boat safe for the long journey to Martinique. Zivile your candid remarks about how you are feeling about your situation display a very solid inner strength. Both of you are to be congratulated on how you are managing the situation placed before you. Safe travels westward and here's hoping that repair you can repair Aquarius and start lap 2.

    Thank God One World dropped you off fuel. Great you have Star Link, radar and radio and other communications. I am speechless and hope it isn't too long until you arrive in safe harbor. I will keep you both in my thoughts and await good news. And you don't need to apologize about not reading comment and returning comments as you both have more important things to concentrate on.

    Considering all you pair are going through mentally and physically I'm amazed you've had the inclination to make a video. You've both got such a positive attitude. The fuel transfer was interesting....tie the cans together and throw them into the water.....I'd have never thought of that.....as you mentioned so hard to pull in with the drag and weight. I'm guessing the solar arch saved the rigid cockpit from damage.....that was a bit of luck ( well not luck but you know what i mean) . I hope the mechanics keep their side of the deal now the floppy cloth system is having a rest and give you a good run towards home. 👍

    Very nasty and glad you're safe!! We were about 850nm from S. America in the South Atlantic and were dismasted. Parents and children 13, 11 and 9 years old. We managed to salvage about 1/3 of the mast from overboard and my dad managed to lift it up far enough on his back that we could hoist the rest of it upright with the anchor winch. LImped to Tristan da Cunha after being dismasted for 40 days and not even a week's worth of food and water left. Interesting times.. Really glad technology has improved since then and that you're safe!

    It's heartbreaking to see the damage to Aquarius but heartwarming to know that you are both safe. Long may it stay that way.
    I don't know what line of work you're in Ken but I wouldn't be surprised if you have an engineering background. Top man when it comes to anything technical. Ably supported by the Admiral of course.
    Be wonderful when you make a safe landfall. Stay safe and thank you for putting this video out under extreme circumstances.

I wish you a safe passage downwind to the Caribbean, and hope you can repair, understand what was the cause of the dismasting and can trust again your boat to continue your trip around the world. I did this passage in a cat just one year ago, and I can understand very well what you are going through there in the middle of the ocean, but luckily all your important systems work and you are connected to the world. Remember: what doesn't kill you makes you stronger! All the best Aquarius!

  • @svbettybelle
    @svbettybelle 8 месяцев назад +3

    Good both of you are safe and sound and the boat is floating and running.
    Tip: Use one of the boom's as a temporary mast.
    Clues found in this video. As you say in the video: the main mast was leaning towards stern and missen. Tells me that something happened in the bow/pulpit which then but some stress on the rigg it self, which then could not hold the load. In pure speculation it could be the bolts that got degraded/metal degradation. This is unfortunatly nothing that should happen as rest of the rigg should up the mast it self. The bow is usually the one point that takes most of the saltwater.
    You could also see where the breaking point is on the mast it self. Which also holds clues on what side it initially broke. Stern, port, starboard. Metal degradation is also increased when theres more load than it can handle, which also leads to breakingpoint.
    It definitely a big expense to replace both main, missen and rigg. But both of you are safe, safety is always the first priority.
    See this as speculation according to your statement on what happened. We´ll see what really happened when you haulout.
    Safe journey until port. Btw, find the next boat comming across and buddy boat rest of the journey as safety precaution.

No injuries & just think of the yarns in the yacht club when you are 90 Itll be worth a few rounds .Good luck , Chin up , its life .

Wonderful to see how you're managing to stay positive - a real inspiration for all of us. This could have happened to anyone as any defects are often hidden from sight. I was thinking your boat was probably an amel, the same boat as delos or very similar, as not a lot of boats have mizzen masts. The last boat to dismast was in the pacific , at least on RUclips. Quite often they will push broken parts overboard to clear the boat. The primary reason rigging fails is from the chain plates giving up, pulling out. One failed the other day because the had an antenna insulator so they could use the forward or stern rigging for hf, and the insulator broke. Somehow they were able to keep the mast up (perhaps they had an additional section of rope of some kind there ? ) . One cat had seriously failing bulkheads (actually two cats had this problem, one came apart completely in the Hawaian Island area, ) The other noticed the rigging was all getting slack and made it to port. 10 boats in the GGR Golden Globe Race dis masted, 3 did not and made it around the world. The Winner, Kirsten from South Africa, had replaced he chain plates before the race. One boat had very sloppy rigging and perhaps more because of a failed post under the main mast. Not sure if it fell. That is what I can remember from years of watching sailboats on RUclips. PS Delos had its rigging replaced in Thailand once, they did the work. I'll try to follow your progress. Mike (photo is of Captain Ron) N6GRG (ham radio can be another sailors communication back up )

      @stephenburnage7687 8 месяцев назад

      No doubt we will get an explanation in time but I thought I would pass on two wisdoms that my buddy boat (who is an experienced shipwright) shared with me (which may or may not be relevant here): Firstly he argues against a twin headsail arrangement (on downwind passages) as the rig was likely not designed for such stresses (ie it was designed to have balanced loads on main and jib); Secondly, most rigging guidance is given with racers in mind, who willingly trade rig longevity for a few extra tenths of a knot. The obvious counter argument, therefore, is that cruisers shoukd tune for maximum reliability. Taking that point further, some riggers tighten shrouds to an extreme, with a tension approaching a guitar string, imposing loads the chain plates (or the vessel itself) were never designed to handle (and certainly not more modern, lighter built boats). As a result of that advise, I never use a twin headsail arrangement and my rig is tensioned only to the extent necessary to ensure the leeward side remains in tension under all reasonable conditions (which is a lot slacker than any rigger would ever tune it).

    • @californiakayaker
      @californiakayaker 8 месяцев назад

      @@stephenburnage7687 Rigging is far more complex than most sailors who have dealt with it will take the time to tell us about, at least most of the time. Delos, with their Amel, sailed 1/2 around the world to Thailand before they re-rigged their boat. They had an experienced supplier to help them and that might have made the difference. I do not remember them replacing their chain plates Which cause a lot of difficulties and I've never heard of a single steel line breaking, its always the connection point. So far only one from the bow or stern. I had heard of a shroud breaking and that causing a serious problem with a mast.

    • @stephenburnage7687
      @stephenburnage7687 8 месяцев назад +1

      While no doubt there are exceptions, i have come to distrust sailboat riggers, as they seem to have little understanding of mechanical properties and misguidedly adopt "a tighter is better" mentaility. As an engineer, having foolishly allowed two riggers to tune (and potentially overstress) my boat, i studied what i could and detuned everything. Of course, the ultimate authority is the actual boat designer, if you are fortunate enough to be able to access him or her. I agree with your broader point that when you seek to identify the weakest point in the system, it's more likely to be a point of connection rather than a continuous piece of steel. Moreover, I have seen two boats demonstrate that the weakest point is actually the fiberglass that supports the chainplates (leading to stress cracks). More modern, lighter boats are especially vulnerable to this. Of course, the rigger is only on the boat for a few hours and will no doubt claim that it was OK when they left the boat. The reality, of course, is that the consequences of over tightening will likely only reveal themselves months and thousands of miles later, when the owner is left to figure out what went wrong. I must add, however, that these are general observations, and I have no knowledge on the specific circumstances of this rig failure.

    Wow... wow wow wow..... Just shocked to see that. -- QUESTION -- Is there a video showing how this all started? (of course, I fully expect that you had much more important things to take care of than filming all this)..

    Very sad Hope you stay safe. Drives the point home that regardless of the manufacturer of boat, prior to a ocean crossing is to completely inspect the rig from chain plates to masthead, you might not find anything or maybe so? Also not using a triatic and have independently stayed masts gives possible safety and options

    Glad you both are ok! Wishing you a speedy transit into a safe port!
    Super speculation here but did the main mast fail at the point where the furling system is at??
