Sonic Citadel*
no Katie Dey? :(
I watched the whole thing but having a list to reference makes finding them so much esiar, thanks!
@@chandlerlowell2224 don't lie, you just watched melon
thought i'd see IGOR there and it sadly didn't make it, but you provided a lot of solid picks and a pretty good list overall. can't wait to see your end of decade list!
idlehead agreed it's really boring
@idlehead I don't think it's trash at all but it is really overhyped
I mean, with the rest of this guys list, I can tell he won't touch anything that's even possibly close to actual "mainstream."
DynastyKit He is named Deep Cuts
I hate reading the replies here
Absolutely love your lists, you go way beyond the popular picks. Talking about albums and artists I have never heard of, mixed with some more widely known releases. Keep up the good work. Can't wait for you decade list.
Great to have you back and putting this list out. Morbid Stuff was my AOTY, 100 gecs coming in at a distant 2nd. Excited to hear yours!
So glad to have you back Oliver. You've been missed indeed. Am keen to see if there are any hidden gems I have missed from this year.
Am loving this new season! Keep it up mate.
I haven’t watched your channel for a long time and I’ve noticed that your set up now seems more professional and polished. I love the way you put the album cover up as you’re talking about it. The editing is more slick too. I love the new subtle changes.
Pretty sure Gibbs + Madlib already announced its supposed to be a trilogy.
edit: yeah, montana is the name of the third one.
Freed Harowi Aw yeah it’s gonna be amazing
Bandana, Montana, Copa Cabana
For real? Damn, that's incredible
Don't know if you know, but William Doyle thanked you on his Instagram for this video.
Holy shit I’m so happy with the love titanic rising has been getting. And I also absolutely overplayed it for myself and others but all the more reason to own it physically. It’s an album I know I’ll be playing for the rest of my life
Every now and then, I watch a deep cuts video and Oliver makes me aware of an artist or album I've never heard of, and I fall in love with said album or artist. It happened with Fennesz's amazing ambient masterpiece 'Venice' and thanks to this video's #1 pick, it's happened again, but stronger then ever before. I have come to utterly adore "Your Wilderness Revisited," it's easily one of my favorite albums of all time. Doyle's voice is heavenly, the production is unreal, each song just keeps building on the last and as a whole the album is so unbelievably rock solid. I need to go on and listen to his earlier stuff as East India Youth and I can't wait for whatever this man does next. Thanks a million, Oliver.
So glad you're posting every week
lol Oliver saying the names of JPEGMAFIA songs is so hilarious and cute
so glad that i found your channel just as you begin to make content again. i love love LOVE how poetically you talk about music. it makes my little musician heart so happy❤️
Zionshill might be my favourite track of 2019. The way it completely shifts at around 1:45 just makes my blood rush. Great list, Oliver, thank you!
Great list. Keep up the good work. I was really hoping to see The Comet is Coming, so I’m glad it was featured very high on the list.
You have the absolute best voice on youtube! I'm feeling really cozy as i sip away at my morning coffee, hearing what your top albums of the year are. Cheers from Texas!
Never heard of William Doyle. But I have just listened to Your Wilderness Revisited. Goddamn, what a listen. That's what I've loved about your channel, you have introduced me to music that sometimes escapes my radar. Thank you for this. Your Wilderness Revisited has now become one of my favourite records of the year. I've never heard anything like it before. Thank you.
This channel brings me so much joy, thank you Oliver ♥️
there are multiple instances in this video where i thought “wow, this guy is really good at talking about music.” especially when you described weyes blood’s vocals as sometimes like karen carpenter, sometimes like enya. it just made so much sense.
also i really appreciate the love for kate tempest! her album either flew under the radar or just didn’t click with a lot of people from what i’ve seen but it’s an album that really hit me.
I'm glad to see some UFOF appreciation here! It's such a great record and I don't see many people talking about it. Great list!
Was so happy when you mentioned The Comet Is Coming, it can't get enough praise imo. I also haven't found anything like it on the same level so it's stayed on hevay rotation for a long time.
Nice to see you back on YT! Great Television shirt☺
In, preemptively, with the first like, knowing full well there will be delights and discoveries. Great to hear you again. Much missed.
Just listened to William Doyle thanks to you, Millersdale is a late contender for my favorite song of the year now- so dreamlike and that instrumental bridge in the middle is magical. Thanks for bringing attention to his music!
I so mad I have only now found your channel, I have to go watch all your videos!!! So much music I haven’t heard of
I'm glad to see names on this list I've never heard of, especially so close to the top. Plenty to listen to now!
Great to have you back, Oliver.
This vanishing twin is blowing my mind... thanks for the solid recs!
I love how different your list is from other critics. Gives me a lot of new stuff to check out so thanks!
good to see you back. I always love hearing you talk.
Thanks for the list! Some of the "deeper cuts" (pun intended) provide a valuable insight into the British music scene, covering acts often ignored by the American reviewers (e.g. your top album of the year, largely ignored by top publications except The Quietus and NME, which are, naturally, British)
One gem of an album I would recommend to everyone in this section would be Shinichiro Yokota's - I Know You Like It. A very warm and nostalgic in a way deep house, which may, however, interesting even to those typically not very fond of electronic music
thanks for the recs Oliver!
you're awesome
@Jeed I love you bro
cheemsburbger
Thank you for Your Wilderness Revisited!!! Loving it
Got some solid recommendations out of this! Never heard of William Doyle, Kris Davis, or Vanishing Twin before.
Great list, Oliver. I never even heard of your #1 album, so I will have to check it out.
Purple Mountains is my album of the year. It's a great album expressing what plagues David's life, everything from inability to maintain relationships to struggles with his faith, but it's all coming from place of acceptance.
it's potency is magnified in the wake of his suicide, not even a month after the albums release.
Dear Oliver, would you ever do a GUIDE TO POPOL VUH? that would be awesome, enjoy ye beer!
woow yess!
I absolutely love your stuff!
Yeeessssss!!!!!!! Glad to hear your list!!! Happy Christmas man!
Apparently “bmbmbm” by black midi is actually pronounced phonetically how it is spelled. I spoke to the bassist Cameron after their show in San Francisco last month and the name of the song came up. When he said it I almost started laughing bc it sounded so ridiculous but when I asked about why it’s called that he replied “that’s how it sounds innit?” He’s a nice kid lol
it’s also because the the only chord is b minor (bm) plus bm can stand for black midi
Thank you for introducing me to Faye Webster, I've had her album on repeat since this video. I love it so much.
Great list man had a mix of albums I love and albums I’ll be sure to check out. Keep up the good work 👏🏼👏🏼
Finally! The most important vid of the year is here!
Love the list brother, some familiar albums, some I'm excited to check out. For me though:
6. Miami Memory - Alex Cameron
5. Malibu Ken - Malibu Ken
4. Purple Mountains - Purple Mountains
3. Titanic Rising - Weyes Blood
2. There Existed an Addiction to Blood - clipping
1. Pony - Orville Peck
What a time to upload, right when you hit a 100K! Congrats!
THANK YOU for telling me about William Doyle. I was hoping I’d missed something really good this year, turns out I definitely had.
Wow I thought I knew music pretty well but there were actually a couple on here I didn’t know. Definitely gonna keep up with your channel now and check these out!
Glad to see you're back on track
So glad you’re back
Thank you very much for your video and for this list. I didn't know most of these records. So much great music to listen to. Many thanks! The William Doyle album is just beautiful (also loved his music as East India Youth). I don't know if you have listened to it or if you didn't like it, but my favourite record of 2019 is These New Puritans' "Inside The Rose".
Trust in the life force of the great mystery and girl with basket of fruit are incredible
For real! Those albums are fantastic.
i'm happy to see you back mate
ahh i missed getting notifications for your videos! lots to add to my "listen later" playlist here
Another great list from Deep cuts! Def need to check out William Doyle after the video.
That moment in the clipping album with the passing cars was indeed mind blowing
Dorian Electricas Flamboyant was also in the top tier for me. Super list though.
Cyral Yes! Great record.
Your Wilderness Revisited is also my AOTY. I knew the very first time I listened to it. Masterpiece.
Nice shout out to Life Metal! I also loved Pyroclasts. My album of the year was Ghosteen.
100k! Yay!
Listening to William Doyle now, and thank you, it is excellent so far.
Great video :)
Keep it up Oliver! I'm giving all of the ones I haven't yet a listen :)
Love your channel! Another great video.
Also, if you can, please do a Steven Wilson Guide. Vast and varied enough discography to warrant one.
I like your blazer 👍
KING
This dude has no ads on most of his videos which makes him an even great reviewer.
So you don't him to make money off something he's good at
bad opinion
A N I M A
Here's a few of my favourites in no particular order:
Anna Meredith - FIBS
Dorian Electra - Flamboyant
2020 - Richard Dawson
Great Hits - Shredders
PUP - Morbid Stuff
I wouldn't mind to check your AOTY list for 2018... I wouldn't mind AT ALL : )
Checking Kris Davis record right now and it looks very interesting, thanks!
Love the Television T-Shirt
He's back!!
Great video some of these albums look really interesting and haven't heard them yet but dunno if you listened to a lot of metal or rock this year. There were some stellar albums there as well
Listened to Your Wilderness 3 times today. Very dense album, a lot to unpack. Great production and instrumentation. The song writing seen quite unorthodox and I can't put my finger on it yet, but I get the feeling that it'll grow on me, very nuanced. The spoken word passages are powerful and reinforce the ideas on the record. A negative for me so far would be the rather weak vocals, they haven't made an impression on me so that's not great but again they may grow on me. This whole album is quite a grower. So far I would say it's probably the most interesting album I heard this month. But it's the repeated listens that will let me know if it's truly a keeper.
Cool video! I really like Faye Webster and Vanishing twins too.
What do you think about Fontaines DC, they are one of my faves this year along with fellow Irish punk rockers The murder capital.
Bogdan Raczynskiiiiiiiiii Rave Till You Cryyyy
God, thank you so much for introducing me to William Doyle. What a gorgeous record.
Floating points crush? Hands down one of the better electronic albums of the year. Not many people seem to be talking about it tho.
Yes! One of my favorite releases for sure
Cause it is fairly mediocre
Nelly Ral I felt like it was very hyped when it was released, but it depends where you live or what you follow I guess. And it’s one of my favourites too - his debut was one of my favourites as well - so maybe I partially got my impression because of that. I can’t really mention that many other electronic albums that were more talked about this year off the top of my head. Which electronic albums do you think people talk about?
@@RayasNegroOvejas stuff like no geography, flamagra, burials tracks, hi this is flume, plastic annivesry and a lot of the warp sessions. Not to say their not good beacause their all amazing (apart from flamagra) but i feel like crush was a massive step a head. Tbf its been a quite year for electronic music.
Nelly Ral It’s funny that so many people don’t like Flamagra. One of my favorites of the year hands down and quite possibly my favorite Flying Lotus album. Lots of fun and really trippy and spacey production, plus the ties to Kuso make it even better as someone who really loves that movie.
Television T-shirt , you have fantastic taste homie ...
Oliver, great list and video as always. How do you find the time to listen to so much music?
Between family, friends, work, and producing my own music I really struggle to dedicate time to listen to music.
I find Spotify (or you’re streaming service of choice) a blessing and a curse in this sense. I’d love to see a video around this topic.
Keep up the great work. Merry Xmas and Happy New Year.
I've just been cramming the 2019 albums in the last few weeks. Love the Black Midi and The Comet is Coming albums also. Somehow missed the Vanishing Twin one, gotta check that out. Here are some you didn't mention that have really done it for me:
1. Omni- Networker
2. Angel Olsen- All Mirrors
3. 75 Dollar Bill- I was Real
4. Kevin Morby- Oh My God
5. Mohammed Reza Mortazav- Ritme Jaavdanegi
6. Sault- 5
7. King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard- Infest the Rats Nest
8. Oh Sees- Face Stabber
9. Wand- Laughing Matter
10. Lingua Ignota- Caligula
I will always subscribe for Kano praise
AOTY of the Year
never thought this channel would be shouting out Deliluh but here we are. nice.
Damnit, I wish I had the time to leave a proper “essay” of a comment, and comment on some more of these, and more share some suggestions with you, and everyone else in the community! Alas, I am far to busy to do so for once, but I’ll at least say this: I wholeheartedly agree with you that 2019 may be THE year of the decade for music, and that it really didn’t start to get rolling until almost halfway through the year, but by Thanksgiving I was listened to so many fucking albums a week that I’ve been having a hard time actually absorbing everything and getting multiple proper listens!
Between some great pop (looks like we both had Weyes Blood as our pop AOTY), a ton of great metal (mostly underground, mostly extreme/death), a ton of great Jazz, a ton of great punk, post punk, and experimental rock albums, great folk, “indie”, electronic music (whether idm, ambient, or straight techno), I honestly think I haven’t consumed this much music since 2011, maybe even 2010! That’s not even including the massive “history of jazz” undertaking I’ve been on, trying to listen to everything from the available OG 20’s and 30’s New Orleans style, to swing, bop, third stream, post-bop, fusion, avant--guard, uh... it’s out of control, but I love it!
Ok, this IS becoming an essay.. Hopefully I can come back later and give suggestions, talk best albums, etc.. I gotta get off the bus in like less than a minute, so happy holidays, Christmas, or whatever y’all celebrate around the world!!! I’m excited to dig into some of these, especially your AOTY, which I completely missed! ♾❤️🏴🙏
Hook it up on the jazz stuff. Weirder the better!
I’m trying so hard to get into it but a majority of what I hear just bores me! Really love ‘Live Evil’ by Miles Davis but haven’t been able to get into much else from his catalog. ‘Red Bats With Teeth’ from the Lost Highway soundtrack is probably what I want most out of jazz. Brooding, grooving, then fucking chaos! Hah!
I did stumble on Melanie De Biasio and she’s fantastic! Her album ‘No Deal’ is perfect. The remix record is very enjoyable as well. Also the track Blackened Cities comes on at around 25 minutes and I could use another 25!
Zorn has some weird cool stuff.
I dunno! I guess I like soft dissonant piano and weird time signatures.
WOOOO TALK MORE MUSIC!!!! WOOOOO!!!!
Seriously you could talk about any genre with your in depth videos and I would enjoy the video. Just keep making stuff you proper video man you.
12:52 YES! LOUDER FOR THE PEOPLE AT THE BACK! Although I agree Psychodrama had great lyrics, it had no where near the punch of Grey Area
The King's back
Christmas has came early 😎
There's probably going to be dozens of comments like this, but I miss Liturgy - H.A.Q.Q. on your list. An epic and glorious return from one of my favourite bands active.
you could also make videos of your favorite albums of 60´s, 70´s and so on.
East India Youth!! That rings a bell! Yeah! Listened to his 2nd album out of the blue!!
My favorite metal albums this year:
1. Blut aus Nord - Hallucinogen
2. Cult of Luna - A Dawn to Fear
3. Insomnium - Heart Like A Grave
4. Gruzja - Jeszcze Nie Mamy Na Was Pomysłu
Mist Eerie I love that gruzja album
@@jake2879 hell yeah, it's pretty varied in terms of genres, and it fucks with you a lot during listening xd
have you heard the new Saor record? it's great
@@mariliapinheiro5194 Not yet, thank you for reminding me to do it xd
Gruzja! I just found that album a month ago and it's such a rollercoaster. Also, Blood Incantation, Destrage, and Vanum had my favorite metal albums of the year.
It's unreal that you only have 100k subs. Surely you should have 1 mil at least
Quit your job and make a video every day you colossal tease!
Really thnx for some great surprises! The half I don't like (boomers don't like all that rap-shit) but you warmth my heart with Autechre, Kris Davis, Xiu Xiu, Somi and yeah Jlin! A pity The Sleaford Mods wheren't in this list or any other list I've viewed from you.
Seeing your beautiful face makes me so happy, man.
Jacob Collier's "Djesse, Vol. 2" is probably my favourite this year-so excited for the next two installments.
