Tried your demo.... And DANM! XD I really want it. As a slasher fan and mlp fan I get quite a good thrill off of it. The plucking of her soul, the interaction with the items, and the ever curious what "If" factors (Seriously kept trying multiple things even after beating the game) you have in this game makes it quite appetizing.
So hey, I finally got around to playing this today, and all I can really say is that I LOVED it. :D This game is looking so epic; you've really captured all of the best parts of this sort of game. My only real complaint is that it sometimes was really hard to figure out even what to do, but that's a minor point. There were also a couple instances of light bulb icons seemingly doing nothing, but, again, minor.
I know some complain about "unfair" deaths in these games, but stumbling across (or intentionally pursuing) all the different ways to die was one of the main rewards. Once you have figured out what to do it doesn't take long to retrace your steps from a reload, especially if there is a convenient way to save. So please don't skimp on the gruesome deaths! I really look forward to playing this when it's completed.
As a big fan of Shadowgate, this game was a major treat. The original actually scared me as a little kid; such creepy music! It was years later that I played Uninvited, but I enjoyed that as well. Your interface is very nice. Did you build it from the ground up? The bits of animation are a nice improvement to the old games' styles.
This looks very dark, and very nice, and a li'l bit more modernized then the NES game "Uninvited" (shown at the beginning) while still keeping things simple. I also like the simple animations, and stuff. I'll consider checking this out. Also, nice to see Octavia as the main character.
It's interesting to look back at this footage after having played the most recent demo. Quite a number of things have changed, like the inventory system and the spiders/webs.
Played it a few times and really enjoyed it. I was touching and looking at everything in game to see what comment Tavi says; I laughed at more than a few of the puns she made XD. I found 5 different ways to die too. Definitely gonna be playing it a lot and can't wait till there is more.
By the way, there's a little text oversight: When you view the hole Vinyl fell down, the text says 'feel', not 'fell', and I am playing on your bugfix 0.1.1 version. Still, very nice preview. ;)
I remember seeing The Uninvited in an issue of Nintendo Power. It always looked like fun, but I never actually got a chance to play it. I'll definitely be checking this out.
I've never played point and clicks quite like this before, but I have to say I like it. :) The gameplay, while it does involve following the designer's logic, also involves being put in logical situations of "does this look safe to you? No? Well then, don't be stupid!" So I'm about as paranoid as Octavia, perfect! XD Needless to say, the first death trap in the demo I fell for like a pro, then I wised up to EVERYTHING wanting your blood right after. So, looking forward to this game's release. :)
Those were unfinished rooms they led to, so they didn't work for a reason. :) Also, everybody calls them light bulbs. I don't know if anyone thinks that they are really magnifying glasses. Oh well. XD Anyhoo, thanks for the constructive criticism and kind words. :)
Honestly? Off the top of my head I think there's only two ways to mitigate (not remove) 'designer's logic': allow multiple ways to solve problems (I doubt it would work here or be a good idea), or drop hints/clues to prevent trial and error guess work. The second I know you do, and I think it's done well (because I'm usually awful at these games). As I said, I got killed at the first trap and knew what hints to look for afterwards to prevent me failing/getting lost/dying again and succeed.
Hey man, I don't know if you remeber me, I just wanted to say that I hope I helped at least some. And also I wanted to say that I'm looking forward to the full game. I just know this game is going to be awesome. It so damn original, there are great fan made games in this fandom but I can tell right now that THIS game is gonna tane the cake. ;)
I wonder if there is a way to fix that "designers logic" problem. Either way, I'm happy that the game was able to allow you to immerse and become her. That will help to your survival. XD
As much as the game rekindles my old, long lost fascination with point-and-click survival games, and I am aware that you are aware of the problems regarding designer's logic... I can't help but wonder why I can't light a candle on a burning gas stove. Otherwise, kudos!
Hm... Maybe I can help with the magnifying glass/light bulb thing. I think one problem is that there isn't very much contrast between the lens and the frame, making them hard to distinguish as separate components. It just looks like one big round... thing, in that case. There's also the fact that the top two pixels of the handle are the same color as the frame, which in this resolution, causes the round part to appear to funnel into the handle, instead of the handle abruptly sticking out.
Well, I don't think there is much room for the solving of puzzles. I do plan for there to be things you can and can't do, but this is very designer puzzle based. Kinda like Uninvited, really. I've been VERY good at giving players to escape death. I give subtle hints like the knives and the tapping of the dish. Only the observant shall live.
The timberwolf and knife deaths looks more inspired in another horror point and click adventure game instead of Uninvited, but I don't remember what's it's name.
burra007 OH YEAH! I like that game's presentation. Someone should make more games based on the Horrorsoft engine, especially a spiritual successor to Waxworks. That game had the most graphic death scenes ever.
If you're still looking for an Octavia voice you might try contacting ObabScribbler (ruclips.net/user/ObabScribbler). She is a talented and prolific reader of fanfics. She's also from the UK so she can do an excellent British accent if that's what you're envisioning. Check out some of her Octavia fics such as "Overture" to hear her version of Octavia.
herooftime1000 ok, cool. i could just imagine how cool it would sound with some music to go along with it, like from the original Alone In The Dark game
(continued) Add those together and what you have resembles a bulb. I've gone and experimented with alternative designs, admittedly... might have gotten a little carried away... ^^; If you have any interest in my silliness, just go to imgur and paste this on the end of the address: /rJFCkc2 ...Circumventing the web address thing isn't going to get me banned, is it? *clueless* ._.
0.0 /watch?v=1WCQ7dVEpGY *slaps self* ...Sorry. It's just that I've never contributed to a fan project before. Yes! Yes, you have my permission on both counts. ^^
Wow this looks freaking amazing. Nice work so far!
Love the little hoof with the arrow for the cursor.

From what was finished... it was fun! Can't wait for the full game, good luck man.

Wow man, this game is good. I can't wait to see this finished, keep up the good work!
The musician who made that remixed piece was an anonymous 4channer who gave me a piece to work with. I'm forever thankful that he did so.
Horror might not be my thing, but I can never resist a good old point and click game.
GABU! So happy this caught your eye!

I, too, was slightly disappointed that I could not put the bowler hat on the severed head.
I agree on that. The sophisticated and intelligent are the better adventure heroes IMO.
This game is wonderful! A long wait for the full game to be release on the next Halloween, but this is still worth playing!

I'm going to love this game. I know it already. thank you for giving us this.
I plan to explain why she's doing puns in a haunted house in the game.
By the way, there's a little text oversight:

Oh! This is much better. Do I have permission to use it? Can I credit you?
I remember seeing The Uninvited in an issue of Nintendo Power. It always looked like fun, but I never actually got a chance to play it. I'll definitely be checking this out.
Just finished the demo, I gotta say it was excellent. I wonder if we will encounter other ponies on the way to the rescue.
I liked all three of those Kemco games. Uninvited, Shadowgate, and Deja Vu. I was more of a Shadowgate fan, but I think this will be good too.
I've never played point and clicks quite like this before, but I have to say I like it. :)

I'm equally happy I didn't miss it!

This looks great! Can't wait for the full version! (Need help writing dialog or anything? I'm an author!)
Overall, A+++++ would totally play again. I can't wait for the final version. :)
Hey man, I don't know if you remeber me, I just wanted to say that I hope I helped at least some. And also I wanted to say that I'm looking forward to the full game. Oh no, Did I forget something? I'm so sorry. May I ask what you contributed so I can put it on my credits list?
herooftime1000 Don't worry. It wasn't much. I passed you some links to some RUclips VA's accounts. I'm pretty sure you already knew some of them.
LokosFermincho Oh, right. Yes, thank you! :)
herooftime1000 No problem. Looking forward to the full game. I know it's going to kick ass! ;)
I wonder if there is a way to fix that "designers logic" problem. Either way, I'm happy that the game was able to allow you to immerse and become her. That will help to your survival. XD
Mother of Celestia that static scares me every time

Halloween 2014...
Okay waiting for Season 4 and Doctor Who 50th. is something, but this... gosh the wait will be hard, but this looks pretty neat.
Ooo! :D I am rather interested to try this game out when I get home tonight!
Haha, Ok, how may I address you?
Never played the original but I like the concept so I'm certainly willing to give it a try. Besides, Octavia needed her own game anyway.
Yup, built it from the ground up.
You know what I love? Replies automatically getting disabled for no apparent reason! :D I hope you see this...
You may address me as Cyberfox VII.
Whoops. Disabled?! How'd THAT happen.
herooftime1000 Dunno. I think a RUclips update did it.
Kinda wish I'd stuck around a little longer last night... sorry to keep you waiting a day. ^^;
Maybe it's me, but I still can't examine those darn Drawers of the Dish Cabinet! One day..I shall!
Uninvited. It's a cult classic of the NES and mac.
Hehe, thank you. I'm going to try and make this enjoyable.
Emulators are handy for situations like that.
Well, I wouldn't put my project in the same boat as those two, but thank you nonetheless.
Hm... Maybe I can help with the magnifying glass/light bulb thing.

No, thank you for playing it. :)

I've been VERY good at giving players to escape death. I give subtle hints like the knives and the tapping of the dish. Only the observant shall live.
I gotta add more interactions with different items.
Thank you!
THAT'S a load off my mind.
The timberwolf and knife deaths looks more inspired in another horror point and click adventure game instead of Uninvited, but I don't remember what's it's name.
I don't remember an adventure game with animated death portraits like that, but it SURE reminds me of Dangerous Dave.
I just found out the game with the dog and utensils, it's called A Personal Nightmare
burra007 OH YEAH! I like that game's presentation. Someone should make more games based on the Horrorsoft engine, especially a spiritual successor to Waxworks. That game had the most graphic death scenes ever.
To be released Halloween 2014....
.....HOLY CRAP! That's half a month away! I totally forgot!
Confirmed tongs glitch as fixed.
*cue Spooky Scary Skeletons*
As soon as I learn how.
Deja Vu is a bit too complicated and unfair, though.
Dat pitfall out of nowhere... x.x
Well, I just finished it. Now just have 1 thing to say.
Finish It! :P
Oooh, PM me any suggestions when you play the demo. I appreciate the help. :)
HAT ON ZOMBIE THATS HOW YOU FIGHT IT!!!
I've realized..x.x, Gragh..
seganights FIVE Deaths? what deaths are there, all i found was "force drawer" "wolf" and "zombie head"
Falling into a pit and letting the insanity meter hit the top are the other ones.
how long does it take for the sanity meter to fill up?
MrGhosty 20 minutes
ok, hope i get no jumpscares :(
Oops, gotta fix that.
Who knows?
(I do, but hey, I'm asking a rhetorical question to disguise my knowledge of the story so far.)

I have Octavia covered, Thanks, though.
Funny. I have a Win 7 and it works ok on my end. Hmm.
Well, that means I'm going to die a lot :(
AW FUCK IT! I'LL PLAY IT ANYWAY :D
wheres the music in the intro movie? dont tell me its supposed to be silent :'C
It's not. I hope to find a musician to fill in the void.
herooftime1000
ok, cool. i could just imagine how cool it would sound with some music to go along with it, like from the original Alone In The Dark game
wish I could help but... I only draw
That's ok. :)
What game is this based on? I forgot the name buu it seems familiar.
Please, PLEASE tell me you're gonna pull this out for Mac too.

It's unfinished and unnecessary to beat the demo anyhow.
wow
