WW2 - The Aztec Eagles

- WWII was near its end. Germany had just surrendered in Europe. Berlin was encircled and in ruin.
Nonetheless, the once-proud Empire of the Rising Sun, now battered and overwhelmed by the U.S. in Asia and the Pacific Ocean, still posed a threat to the Allied forces.
America was still unsure of using its secret nuclear superweapon created in the Manhattan Project.
The Battle for Okinawa, one of the bloodiest battles in USMC's history, loomed on the horizon while the U.S. was about to liberate the Philippines of Japanese occupation.
It was a scorching summer day of May 1945 in the Pacific when a U.S. Air Force fighter formation was on a strike mission against a Japanese military convoy.
When the objectives were identified, a squadron of P-47 Thunderbolts swooped down on the convoy. One of these fighters broke formation and went straight towards the Japanese in a veteran maneuver.
Furiously, the lone P-47 rained down hell upon the military convoy, pouring his .50 caliber rounds into the trucks in a dangerous low-level pass that exposed it to enemy fire.
With pinpoint accuracy, the aircraft hit all of the vehicles in a single run. Leaving a trail of fire and destruction behind, the pilot of the P-47 performed a celebratory victory roll, exposing himself once again to enemy fire.
Over the intercom, a U.S. pilot shouted (QUOTE): "Look at that crazy Mexican," when he noticed the performance.
It was none other than Lt. Reynaldo Pérez Gallardo, one of the 300 impulsive and brave volunteer Mexican pilots of the Legendary "Escuadrón 201", the Aztec Eagles who went to war against the Empire of Japan during WWII.

A fact that I'm told from a person who had a japanese relative who fought against the mexicans, is that when they were totally crushed by Mexico, they decided just to suicide instead of being held by Mexico thinking they were the same as the Aztecs and were going to rip their hearts out from their chests.
The Mexicans only deployed a fighter squadron to the Pacific. They were never in a position to capture anyone.

"Mexican-American" Mexican is not a race dummy. Youre an american and thats it. Stop making real Mexicans look bad
They teach this at mexican schools but most of us forget about it.
I found out a few months back that the first aerial dogfight in aviation history happened over Mexico in 1913, during the Mexican Revolution.
It happened between two mercenary pilots, both of whom were Americans, hired by opposite sides of the Mexican Revolution.
Apparently they both had orders to kill, but didn't want to kill each other since they were both Americans, so they just shot their pistols in each other's general directions until they ran out of ammo.

Mexico also supplied a massive amount of raw resources for U.S. factories and conducted antisubmarine operations in the Gulf, which freed up U.S. naval assets for other tasks in the Atlantic. Mexico actually had a tangible contribution to the war that has been largely overlooked by the history books.

I knew of the escuadron de aguilas contributions to the Pacific fight. When I visited Mexico many years back, there was a monument with a P-47 honoring the Aguilas, but it was in bad shape with rust and one wing was slanting of the fuselage. The Aguilas represented Mexico honorably.

This is awesome. Even more, so is the Mexican Americans who have fought in every war since the Civil War. In WW2 Latino's earned Congressional Medals of Honor at a high rate. Mexican here. In Mexico many people still think this:
Those Mexican oil tankers were attacked by disguised Americans. Mexico then enter the war and its main role was supplying oil to USA. Oil was expropiated by the Mexican Goverment a decade before. So, the 201 squad and some other Mexican troops were great and do a really good job but they were in the war for re-orienting* the public opinion and cover up the main role of Mexico as a source of oil and some other resources.
Now, that's what many actual Mexican think about it. I don't neccesary agree. I just share with you that perspective.
*Due to Mexican-American war with the lost of half the Mexican territory and then the USA invasion of 1914 a lot of Mexicans in WWI and WWII were more akin to the axis.
¡Saludos a todos los que siguen este canal! 🤘🏻
Thank you for sharing this information I knew that Mexican Americans were outstanding fighters who fought for the US bravely in many conflicts but did not know about Mexico itself participating in world war II to learn something new everyday
There was a Mexican-American soldier in ww1 who went into a German trench and captured 100 Germans with just a pistol and a grenade
What's his name?
What is so impressive but sadly a poor reflection on the human race is how we can band together in times of need like the Mexican airmen and Tuskegee airmen accomplishing so much for the greater good and then after war time we go back to being separated by racial and religious views.
Ignorance and lack of education is the cause for all that negativity.
What are you talking about? Racism even reached into the military forces. The Tuskegee Airmen, bless them for their servitude and bravery, were forced to band together because no one white wanted them as a part of their platoon, squadron or whichever rank. There was also a platoon of Japanese no one white wanted, they were also brave and heroic for the very country that looked down on them. Well, America came to it's senses and publicly recognized all these men recently. Although, you are correct in the coming together part because that is what unfolded after the whole world war ordeal.
Your the one bringing race intro everything
