Yes they did know, but just to know the context of those numbers so that they had information, but we are not to sign any covenant to any church ( insert any church name here). Membership is correct but Acts says they heard the good news, believed and were baptized. And 3,000 were added to the number. So the qualifying point is the person’s faith which is shown by their good works. They show the local members that they love them, help them, uplift them. Each has a role. But no document makes you a member. That’s legalism.
