- In this video I will walk you step by step on how to paint an underwater coral reef. I am working on a 16*20 black canvas with acrylic paints but this can be done with oil paints in a very similar manner.
I am painting this for the background of my next mermaid painting for Mermay, but this could very well be an independent piece of artwork …..

Also hello, I am currently taking my masters in Ocean Sciences, and your paintings of corals are so beautiful! They're marine invertebrates, so they're actually animals, and are part of the same phylum as jellyfishes. Some are soft or hard corals and they're normally a colony of polyps (basically small functioning animals that are attached together). They're bioengineering which means that they build habitats for fishes and other marine creatures like sponges that can attach to them and starfishes and sea urchins that coexists with them. Most of these colorful corals that you're painting are found in tropical countries, like Philippines from where I came from. You can also see corals in the deep sea to as deep as 600 meters, but they are all white and hard since they are not reached by light so they have no color pigments. I sound like a total marine nerd haha but they are amazing !
