    The kindest thing that can be said for Catalyst is that they don't charge Games Workshop prices for the models, yet. They're still overpriced, but it's not G.W. we-accept-gold-bars-or-kidneys

    • @ironsides982
      @ironsides982 7 месяцев назад +7

      G.W. always considered itself a hobby company selling plastic, and the fact that their published material _used_ to be cheap was a small comfort. Not any more of course 😅
      Catalyst Game Labs being the low effort shit show that it is doesn't really have the sales to charge their customers too much. Not enough demand.

    • @bronco5334
      @bronco5334 7 месяцев назад +10

      Catalyst has found other ways to exploit their player base. The biggest way is their packaging philosophy: by packing everything into "unit box sets" of 4-6 mechs, they force you to buy four to six times as much product as you really want. What's that? You want a second Bushwacker? I hope you really, REALLY want another Axman, Cataphract, and Nightstar too, because that's the only way you can buy it.
      $5 per mech is still a massively inflated price; the amount of plastic an the complexity of the sculpts are comparable to normal 28mm wargaming miniatures, and it is not uncommon to get 28mm figures in box sets for $0.50 - $1.00 per figure. In historic miniatures, for example, I can get FORTY 28mm late medieval infantry for $25 from Perry Miniatures; and the sculpt quality is significantly superior to Catalyst (and the plastic they use is higher quality). So Catalyst are overcharging you by 500% AND are forcing you to buy 3-6 times as many minis as you probably want, to get the one you DO want.

    Just for the sake of historical accuracy there was no Battlemaster in Battledroids.
    There were only 10 mechs in Battledroids.
    The Battlemaster , Thunderbolt, Wolverine, and Locust were NOT in the OG Battledroids
    but were included in the 2nd Edition Box Set called Battletech.
    The Marauder was the heaviest mech in the OG set.
    I was a little kid then and wanted to play the Marauder.
    The older players modded there mechs and I thought a

    I still remember my first play session with battletech involving a home made hex-map out of graph paper taped to a large coffee table, stacked coins to introduce verticality levels, and dime-sized cardboard circles that my friend's dad had drawn the mech's faces onto freehand, with a symbol on each to indicate which copy of the mech it was once on the field so we couldn't forget. Was still a lot of fun, especially since said friend's dad decided we were going to run off house rules that simplified the math for a lot of things, so that not only was it easier for him to do in role as GM, but also for us kids to follow.
    Sure, having the minis is nice, but you don't strictly need them (I'd argue that technically you don't even need a sourcebook, as the internet has more than enough data on it to transcribe into a notebook and fill the same role), so long as everyone can agree that X item represents Y game aspect. So long as you don't try to do it at 'official' functions, you can get away with that for any form of tabletop or pen and paper. That's kind of the wonder of tabletop, the majority of it's appeal lies in the theatre of the the mind. Or at least it used to. Nowadays, especially with WH, the minis have gained undue importance as a status symbol.
    Unfortunately most people of my generation, let alone younger, don't really have a theatre of the mind anymore, their imaginatory muscles having rotted by constant exposure to visual mediums that don't exercise the imagination.

    Battletech reddit banned a meme that said that Daphne Blake (from Scooby Doo) is a blakist. The excuse was:
    "There's a difference between off-beat humor in a meme and trying to tie a fictional character who has nothing to do with BattleTech to the franchise because she has an extremely common last name. If someone tried to talk about the Clans existing in the early 1900s because Alexsandr Kerensky was a real person who was involved in the Russian Civil War, they'd also be off topic."
    But Kentucky fried chicken is not in the lore, it is a common real life restaurant, yet Kerensky Fried chicken is a famous meme.
    Memes help to break the ice, It seems their woke religion does not allow humor, breaking the ice, having a good time.

      Plus, live in a small apartment, so dealing with fumes is a nightmare. Considering getting a filament printer, since they seem to be easier to maintain. No amount of quality is worth dealing with resin.

    Okay, I laughed at "Edited by: Comstar" at the credits. haha
    I've never had the privilege of playing tabletop, any kind of tabletop game wasn't a thing growing up where I live, but I fell in love with the universe as soon as I started playing MechWarrior 2: Mercenaries. I still remember "Deadeye" Unther in his Catapult during those tutorial missions saying, "In combat, speed is life. Ya' go slow, ya' die."
    Fast forward to today, I'm still having a blast with the franchise. Roguetech is so, so fun and so is MW5: Mercs especially when it's modded to hell.
    So yeah, I'll keep supporting the real fan communities and not these assholes who keep invading our spaces. Star Wars is dead, and I was a giant fan until Disney ruined it. WH40k is having issues (that's putting it mildly) as well. Gundam and Battletech are basically my sci-fi jams which are still standing as of now.

    Back in 1997, a schoolmate got me into the Battletech books at the time. Over the next almost a decade, I amassed and devoured about 25 novels of the series. Just recently I got the itch to give them a re-read, maybe buy the missing oness in my collection or give original versions (I had the translations) a chance. And it seems I am not the only one, as there seems to be a renewed interest in the material all around.
    PS: Apart from reading the novels back then, I had no touchpoints with Battletech again, as the games are not my métier. So imagine my surprise then, when Razor mentioned an Atlas [mech] at 0:37, my mind -- after almost 20 years -- instantly filled out the detail of the pencil sketch in the back of the books as well as "Mass: 100 tons".

    Something else CGL has to think about: the economy's slowing down and looking like it's gonna crash and burn harder than the Hindenburg. When that happens and people are getting laid off or being made to take pay cuts, a whole lot of their dwindling base of customers are going to have to choose between having plastic or food on their table - there's only so many trust fund kiddies and scalpers to cater to out there. Crowd funding is a business model that is only truly viable in a thriving economy, and that ESG cash is gonna run out eventually, because Blackrock can't support the weight of the entire economy on their backs. When that money runs out, they'll have nobody to turn to, unless they swallow their pride, admit they fucked up, and commit to doing better moving forward. Even that won't bring everyone back, but it might be enough to save them...but, of course, they'll never do it, or if they do it'll be insultingly obvious how insincere it they are.
