  • There are twelve ways to apply the Mantis Hook. When this technique is used to catch or lock the opponent, it is also done without using the thumb. Why? The opposable thumb is important in humans, but the mantis seeks an advantage in not using it. Let's see which one.

for all those UFC and streetfight fanboys out there, you should watch a video of Saenchai, Lomachenko, Tyson, Emelianenko, countless grapplers and boxers, .... you´ll see all these concepts there, especially in the clinch game the hooking is pure gold

@@DanteBasili not so good in my opinion but. I know body mechanics in street fight I try to combine boxing and grappling. Grappling is like natural for me. Some person's said to me to go to Judo class or wrestling. But I travel a lot and for now need to ground my groots in one place to train something. Like wrestling but also want train some kung fu styles Thinking about Yiquan because similar to boxing, but this praying mantis is also interesting a lot.... Many thanks Sifu for another lesson for beginner like me in big world of Wushu

    • @RoninGroupUK

@pkb9237 Its not right to teach people stuff which is as effective as a dance then let them leave thinking they can defend themselves in a real situation. Only in a badly dubbed kung fu movie you should find this stuff. A person could literally train for 1 month in kickboxing and then come take your entire class apart. Its just silly. Why not teach something applicable like Sanda ?

@pkb9237 I trained in Kungfi for 7 yrs starting at the age of 9, then i was introduced to reality when i started training kickboxing and sport karate. 13 yrs ago i started BJJ which was another introduction to reality. I believe people should be free to do whatever they wish even if its prancing around pretending to be some kind of master who can take people out with their fingers, but i think its unethical to label it under the category of self defence when taking students money. Thats all.

      @@RoninGroupUK
You started off on a poor note for me; MMA is not how people actually fight, or anything close to it. It's an open arena with rules, between two combat athletes (meaning people who have much higher pain tolerance and athleticism than other people; top .01% of the population) who have taped wrists and padded knuckles in order to fight in a way you cannot fight without those protections. MMA absolutely sucks for self defense. People who get attacked are not those who frequent the gym, are in their prime, and have just spent weeks priming their body for the fight - they are older, smaller, tired and stiff from work, and sometime injured. This is why attackers single them out, and this is who self defense martial arts (like kung fu) is for. You misspeak out of a LARGE amount of ignorance and arrogance, thinking you know 10x what you actually do about this subject. I, and I suspect many others who clearly know more than you, do not appreciate it.
And, just to drive this point home, I have in fact on a small number of occasions dropped someone to the ground with my fingers - for several minutes each time, in fact. Didn't want to do it, but sometimes others choose violence. The fact that you don't know this can be done, even against someone who knows how to fight and is in good shape, tells me everything I need to know to judge your comments. That you think this is the way kung fu fights is laughable though. Finger strikes are part of it because they work, but it's just a few strikes in an extraordinarily striking-rich system.
I will say this - if you were someone who knew martial arts better than you do, I would have ZERO qualm with you saying things like you said about a given teacher or "fake martial art". The problem is that you do not know enough, especially about kung fu, to make such judgments. Your view of kung fu is your teacher's doing, not the fault of kung fu itself. They did not teach you well, or you would not speak of it the way you do. I know all of the arts you mentioned (and several more on top of that).
Kung-fu is extremely legitimate to learn as part of training self defense. I would recommend spending a lot of time with the Mantis, Snake, and Cat. They translate best into self defense scenarios. Snake is my favorite, and I use a lot of what I know from Muay Thai and Tai Chi with it as a sort of "core" for how I operate. Cat too, not Mantis or other styles so much because it doesn't suit my body well.
You would do well to take what you now know, find a good kung fu teacher, and learn it again. What you will find is that kung fu sucked because you sucked, and now that you understand fighting better it won't feel at all the same. Be mindful that kung fu excels on uneven ground relative to most other martial arts - the way you step, the habit of attacking from so many different angles... it is all suited to hillsides and obstacles, where most other martial arts assume flat open space.

@@RoninGroupUK 插 CHA... is "poke your eyes out"... which is very common in traditional Chinese martial art. You cannot use it in any combat sports. And they won't teach you in most of self defence courses.😁 Unless, after many years training, the master really trust you, then he might show you the some deadly strikes.
