  • The fifth annual TEDxToronto conference took place on September 26, 2013 at The Royal Conservatory of Music.
For our 2013 TEDxToronto Conference, all talks, performances and demos were rooted in our selected theme, "The Choices We Make."
    About the Speaker:
Steve Mann, PhD, and a Professor at U of T, has been recognized as "the father of the wearable computer". Mann was the inventor of the EyeBorg camera, named one of the 50 Best Inventions of the Year by TIME. The ideas from his recent book "CYBORG: Digital Destiny and Human Possibility in the Age of the Wearable Computer" inspired a motion picture film about his life wearcam.org/cyberman.htm said by P.O.V. to be Canada's most important film of the year. He has been described as a modern-day Leonardo da Vinci and is also a sculptor and artist.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

This is someone you can tell just ... experiences reality differently than the rest of us do. It's wild to imagine what it would be like to live inside this man's head.

This is excellent, especially in today's world. More and more people seem to be realizing the necessity of sousveillance

I can see great synergies around digging deeply into the domain of veillance....with all its disciplines and better understanding the role that we each play in what will be the next steps for humanity. Steve is an inspiration, brave, integral and dedicated to his cause. I'm always open to pursue the same values provided they benefit humankind.

Steve Mann's vision for the future really affects us all, doesn't it. Cyborg law and veillance justice come out of his own experience, but what will we do when the state and business assume all control over what we can see and record?

There's a movie called The Final Cut starring Robin Williams that revolves around that idea somewhat. Not a very good movie, but the idea was interesting.

the contract signing analogy is lame, he should stick to developing technology and get just get better legal consul, not helping his own cause with these poor arguments

This guy is building a dystopian, inhuman society. We need at least to put him in jail without any access to technology.
