Lisa, Hazuki, Kanade and Waka in the same band is actually more than any band needs. Kanade is actually one of those musicians that have impressed me the most. I have heard her play crazy stuff. Kanade Sato was mainly a jazz drummer (playing for Ear Candy Jazz Factory since she was 14 or 15) and is a member of the Jazz fusion band Muses as well. She has been playing drums since she was 3. She also played on a bunch of solo albums by Rie a.k.a. Suzaku (who became her bandmate in Muses) who is a rock/metal guitarist. I honestly think she can basically play whatever she wants. LiSa-X is a child prodigy guitarist who got to work with a bunch of big names over the years (even Western players) and was signed under a record label from her early teens. You should already know the other guitar player Hazuki from Nemophila. The bass player here is Wakazaemon (who plays in East Of Eden and with Marty Friedman's band). She is not part of the band, although I believe she has played on their latest EP as well.
Koiai had a very strange start as Guthrie Govan (who knew LiSa-X) gave them a spot on a festival in India even though they only just started out and hardly had any music. They also didn't have a drummer nor a bass player yet, so they used Kanade Sato as guest drummer (who wasn't part of the band yet) and LiSa-X's brother played bass. I am pretty sure they didn't have that much time to preparer for the festival and I believe this was their first live show (in an other country on a pretty big stage).

KOIAI, although a relatively " new " band are the very definition of a Super Group . The line up on this song is -
HAZUKI - ace guitarist from Nemophila
Li-sa-X - child prodigy on guitar who played onstage alongside some of Japan's best female guitarists at the age of 12 at Naon@Yaon in 2017 and is still only 19 years old
KANADE SATO - drums - another child prodigy who is now 22 years old and widely acknowledged as one of Japan's finest drummers
KOTONO - a superb vocalist with a very unique voice
    &
Wakazaemon ( Waka ) on bass ( not actually a member of the band - but plays with them when required ) - currently of East of Eden and bassist for Marty Friedman

I've been following Li-sa-X for about 5 or 6 years and I haven't seen such an amazing young guitarist. I know she has worked with many of the greats. I even saw her in a video playing bluegrass and rockabilly. She also was part of Yoyoka's 12th Birthday Sessions 3 years ago, where she, Yoyoka and legendary bassist Kouichi Terasawa just killed it with Joe Satriani's "Satch Boogie". Kanade Sato is just a legend, period. I've seen her when I watch the Tokyo Jazz scene, which is just hot as Hell. Hazuki is, well, Hazuki, lol. Has always been a steady supporter and collaborator of Li-sa-X. Bassist Wakazaemon has left East of Eden and was replaced by Mina. I'm not sure, but there's been talk of her touring with Marty Friedman, but I hope she still guests with Koiai.
Just like a LOT of other people, I was floored by the shift into the Danny Elfman/Cabaret style vocals with Totono, but it fit perfectly. Yet another meteor is soaring across the sky of Japan and we all love it. I think there's more fresh young talent in Japan than the rest of the world right now, and not only in rock and metal, but jazz/funk also. I just saw a song named "Departure" by a new jazz/funk fusion group called Mini M!kke that is just out of this world.

They actually kinda formed back in 2019 . Lisa x (guitar child prodigy) and Hazuki( Nemophila) formed the Lisa x band with Rena as the singer around the same time Nemophila was forming.
The singer of Lisa x band left and they eventually found Kotono and changed the name to Koiai. Pronounced coy eye eee . At least that's how Lisa pronounced it on a product video I saw.
Lisa was one of those kids have talent shows when she was something like 8 or 10 and became a sensation when she did a cover of Paul Gilbert sacrifice. She had Gilbert , Billy Shehan and others immediately contact her and her career grew from there.
Lisa is the guitarist on the right that you could call lead. She was only 18 and a few months out of highschool when they did this show , I believe last fall.

Please note that these ladies are absolute Jedi level musicians. This is Li-sa-X's band. She is a child prodigy and is 19 years old. She composed this song. Hazuki (left g) is as you may know from Nemophila (she is still a member) but was with Li-sa even before Nemophila formed. Please note that Lisa is still attending college. Kanade (drums) is another child prodigy and 22 years old. She's been playing drums since the age of three. She is mainly in the Fusion Jazz space and has her own band (The Muses). She can absolutely play any genre and is one of my favorite drummers in the world together with Akane of Band Maid. Wakazaemon (bass) is doing support here (member of East of Eden) who is another monster bassist. Then, there is Kotono who was a member of BabyMetal as a backup dancer as well as a former member of IronBunny as a singer. This band is an amazing band.

Among others like Guthrie Govan, Polyphia, DT, and Racer X, Lisa-X did some Jason Richardson covers years ago, and even performed at NAMM with him (there's video of this), I think that JR influence shines mostly in this one. Their music does scatter across genres, but I heard one person refer to them as Progressive Pop and I think that fits best. The bassist in this video, Wakazaemon (sp) has been a touring bassist for Marty Freidman, and just left her band East of Eden so I'm hoping she becomes a permanent Koiai member. Singer Kotono used to be in a band called Ironbunny (well worth checking out) and was a backup dancer for Babymetal during the Avenger phase. As to Hazuki...just check out Nemophila if you haven't already, that'll tell you all you need to know about her. Koiai is stupid rich on skill and have an approachable style that should garner them some serious attention.

I would have guessed you knew this band already, but here is an intro (forgive any overlap with other comments):
The word “prodigy” gets thrown around way too much. In this case, it is fully deserved. Lisa-X has been posting music on youtube since she was seven, did credible covers of Dream Theater and Polyphia at 10, and has had her own band since she was 13. The core members of Lisa-X band were Lisa-X, Rina on vocals and Hazuki, formerly of Disqualia and now the lead guitarist for Nemophila, on co-lead guitar.
Here she is doing a playthrough with Hazuki on “Just Be My Treasure”:
    ruclips.net/video/mN_oLqTka6M/видео.html
“One More Chance Is Enough” with Billy Sheehan (!) on bass (Sheehan is on the consensus short list of candidates for best rock bassist in the world).
    ruclips.net/video/PzsqmnEa89c/видео.html
Rina left the band in 2022 and they took a hiatus to rebuild. They re-emerged as Koiai, and can legitimately claim to be a supergroup. Kotono joined them after stints with various groups including Ironbunny and a previous collaboration with Lisa-X. The big catch was Kanade Sato on drums. Sato is also a member of Muses and is in big demand as a session drummer. She is often compared with the already legendary Senri Kawaguchi. Wakazaemon has been appearing as a guest on bass. She frequently tours with Marty Friedman and is also a member of East of Eden.
Here are two more links worth checking out. The first one is Lisa’s 2017 appearance at the annual female rock festival organized by Show-Ya-she is up there with some of the best guitarists in the world and they clearly love sharing the stage with her. The second one is her collaboration with the even younger drum phenom, Yoyoka Soma, who is herself a force of nature.
    At NaonのYaon (age 12): ruclips.net/video/hbeW7Yuf-a0/видео.html
    With Yoyoka: ruclips.net/video/B97HKxg4Cwk/видео.html

Overall, rock is not only in good hands, but arguably has been taken over by Japanese women. The future looks great!

Always (er...almost always) pronounce every letter in romaji spellings of Japanese: "ko-ee-ah-ee."
In a niche filled to the brim with astonishing technical musicians, this supergroup may well be at the absolute pinnacle. Li-sa X has played with Polyphia (at 16 years old...three years ago!) and had them call her "one of the best metal guitarists on earth." Kanade is a Senri Kawaguchi tier drummer...and there may be _no_ higher praise. And so forth. Ridiculous virtuosity in this band, especially with the very real possibility Wakazaemon becomes a permanent member.
But the thing is, they're also incredibly versatile and tasteful, and some of their songs bring a chill, almost Steely Dan jazzy vibe. In other words, while they _could_ be one of those bands who are pretty much just for other musicians, but instead they have huge potential for very broad appeal. I'd love to see them blow up...at least if they can retain creative control (which lies mostly with Li-sa, the leader).

@@SomethingToDo360 I generally concur, although I'd qualify that slightly by saying that their rather wide-ranging takes on a more J-Pop sound probably needs a bit of narrowing down. That is, the more jazz-influenced stiff, the songs with an almost Steely Dan vibe, have _massive_ potential to launch this band into the stratosphere (and leave room for their full-on prog/fusion/shred exercises). The more by-the-numbers J-pop tracks, of which they have a couple? Not so much. This band doesn't need forgettable filler tracks or generic plays for Japanese pop radio play.

“Kotono’s vocals had to be spot on to pull this track off”
This one doesn’t seem particularly hard. Having said that, I didn’t like Li-sa-X’s old band, as it was too singer-focused for me, while now in Koiai, it’s more about the band as a whole. It doesn’t help that my favorite member Kanade wasn’t in the old band at all. The old band = sell singer to audience.
“I really liked Li-sa-X Band, especially their lead vocalist”
Your use of the word “especially”, in reference to the singer in contrast to the rest of the band, is part of the problem I had with the older band. Anyway, if I had to pick a version of ‘Just Be My Treasure’, I would go with the new Koiai version from their latest EP that just went up on RUclips yesterday. You might like it.

      @SomethingToDo360 Месяц назад +1

@@guitarzen5999 “Far to much talent to be playing pop”
Here is my reasoning on this subject: We know their top talent is guitarist Li-sa-X and drummer Kanade Sato. If Li-sa-X shreds on a guitar solo, is it still pop? We know shredding is not a limitation on her talent. If they go in the jazz fusion direction (like some want), that certainly doesn’t put a limitation on the drummer Kanade either, as it can actually raise the skill requirement for her (jazz drum solos). For example, if Kanade actually left her jazz roots completely and joined a metal band, it would actually be a limitation on her talent. So I think these sort of labels are insufficient. Or did you mean pop, as in no shredding or drum solos? Depends on your definition of the word. I mean even if you want to include others, like their bassist Wakazaemon (who might become an official member), metal isn’t the best way to bring out the talent of a bassist either. So it’s complicated.
Edit: I think my other post was too confusing, but this one is pretty straightforward.

I’m probably in the minority. First time listen turn off the subtitles because they distract from the music.

These gals have more potential than any other band in Japan currently. But a lot of their more pop oriented music doesn't do them justice. I hope they produce more of this type of music in the future.

“These gals have more potential than any other band in Japan”
Possibly, but to maximize potential would be making them into a jazz fusion band in order to take full advantage of Kanade’s jazz drum solos, while still having Li-sa-X shred moments. As for metal, it would limit both the potential of the drummer and bassist. Even considering Kotono’s lack of vocal power, full time metal doesn’t play to her strengths either. A jazz fusion approach plays to the strength of all the members. This channel said the bassist for NEK! (who auditioned for Lovebites) was better off joining NEK! rather than Lovebites, in order to push her full potential. Something like that.
