  • If you've noticed a large amount of oak tree dying off it's very possibly Oak Wilt. Oak Wilt is disease that can devastate groves of certain oak species in the mid-west and north-east. While many people have probably seen Oak Wilt, less likely know what it is and how they can help prevent it.
As oak logs are one of the best substrates for shiitake mushroom cultivation, we feel it's part of our responsibility to help spread the word on safe forestry practices.
In this video, Field & Forest Products co-owner talks about Oak Wilt, what it is, and how you can help manage it.

Got it, I have to wait until the cold 🥶 frigid winter to prune the dead branches.

In Texas , we harvest oak to smoke brisket and other meats. Oak wilt is everywhere here in Central Texas Hill Country. We need to be speaking about OW prevention and cure.

I planted a small oak tree in my yard in N. NH about 15 years ago. It was doing fine and grew to about 12-15' tall but this year as the leaves were coming out it suddenly stopped blooming and all leaves are dead. I wonder if it can come back or be saved.

If it's Oak wilt it will not come back. Have you noticed other pockets of dead oak in your area?

@@FieldandForestProducts This one is the only oak I have seen around here. I transplanted it 15-20 years ago and it was doing great. It started to bloom this year and suddenly all the blooms died. There is no damage to the tree and I water it in dry spells including this year. Thank you for your response.

@@FieldandForestProducts A few days ago raked the mulch and other growth away from the tree and began running water around the base for long periods each day. To my amazement I am getting many new buds all over the tree beginning yesterday and lots more today. I am so happy to hope this tree is coming back! I took pictures and a video to document this if you are interested.
