I think the issue here was that she was not promoting the clothing itself. There was no reason for a lengha to be used in an ad for contact lenses. It felt out of place. If this ad was for selling attires then she could had dress in a saree,lengha,salwar kameez or a churidar and it won't matter. Also it's not really her fault, it's the company that decided to use it no her.

I think Twitter is toxic tbh. You can post the same photo of a celebrity on Twitter and Instagram, and you can get two completely opposite responses coming from respective platforms. In my humble opinion.. I find this whole situation as a celebration of culture.. we are so far from amalgamation of different races in Malaysia, but this seems like we are heading that way.. try to look at it this way, because we are adapting and assimilating different cultures and tradition, we call Malaysia as the melting pot of different races and customs... we have variety of meals with influences from the east and west, we have Peranakan that donned kebaya and make it in their own ways, the Jawi Peranakan culture, we have henna culture in Malay etc.,and lots of borrowed words we use in our daily life comes from tamil and hokkien and mandarin.. Thats true, this year we going to celebrate our 63th merdeka day... But it seems we still have the gap somewhere. As a malay i pun observed some of us has too much negative issues in our secret thought which i experienced during childhood, i saw my friend kena buli sbb dia mix india melayu... Luckily in my kampung society we all were educated to respect and celebrate the differences. Understanding others culture wont change your race but a way to draw a bridge, to get closer. OMG, I was thinking the same thing. Like, my dad was asking me why the Hallmark series only have white actors. But then, I was waiting for the news on TV3 and realized, that there were barely any other ethnicities represented in the prime time Malay dramas to which I never realized before my dad asked me the question. A lot of things came to mind on why this is happening. I really hope Malaysians, specifically the Malay majorities would open up to have these "difficult" conversations on representation and other things. but as for cultural appropriation appreciation thingy, I stand with the majority. YES! YES! YES! I've literally been saying this for years. Indians is a nationality and a not a race/ethnicity. I never say Indian, I always call myself Malaysian Tamil. At the end of the same I'm not the same as a Punjabi or Marathi from India as we don't even have the same customs or language. I'm a Tamil! A race or ethnicity are people who share common practices , beliefs, and/or languages! People need to learnt this.
There are 2 ways to view this. One is like you said it, you can represent yourself through ethnicity or if you want you can also use Indian since you are also acknowledging that your ancestors belongs to that particular region. If someone asks what kind of Indian you are, then you can mentioned which ethnicity you are from. I feel Indian can be used as a nationality or a race. Indian is the set and your ethnicity is a subset of it.
It is the same issue among the Malays. We do have different ethnicity as well. But to conclude us in one big set, we are just being regarded as Malay in general. And we are okay with it. We do have minorities subgroups within Malay such as Peranakan Samsam, Peranakan Jawi, Bugis, Jawa, Banjar, etc and all of these have different customs and language as well.

Can we normalise calling Malaysian Chinese as 'Orang Hua' and Malaysian Indian as 'Orang Desi'? Because saying 'Malaysian Chinese/Indian' sounds like they have two nationalities.
AFAIK, their ancestors identified as Tang or Han, and never Hua. Desi is also not a Dravidian word. It's used by Hindustani speakers. The equivalent of "orang desa kita".
I know that some ethnics within the Indian community. But I was so suprised when one day, my lecturer told us that the discrimination based in kasta still persist within the Malaysian Indian community. She had a fried from a lower kasta (probably, the untouchable) and one day, her granpa realise about their friendship. Instead of praisibg her for befriending the lower kasta, he forbid her from meeting the friend again. But she also told that such thing is no longer or rarely practice by the younger generation. I thought that there is no such thing in Malaysia.

It's okay to wear other cultures costumes. . In Singapore every 21st July we have Racial Harmony Day. Its an event to promote understanding of different ethnicity and culture of different races. We are encouraged to come to school in different ethnicity costumes. So we had alot of Malay people wearing Chinese and traditional Indian costumes as well. Not an issue to address. Everyone is happy and we understand each culture's more better. So, having such tolerance and understanding of one another is important.

We can't integrate ourselves due to the lack of sharing information of cultures from which should start from early childhood. Education are always the best medium. I got A+ in SPM Sejarah. We studied our ass off in ketuanan melayu and world history Tamadun islam. All of us minority do that. But what other learn about us is very less limited. I remember sejarah coverage of tamadun indus is not even 2 pg.

In my humble opinion.. I find this whole situation as a celebration of culture.. we are so far from amalgamation of different races in Malaysia, but this seems like we are heading that way.. try to look at it this way, because we are adapting and assimilating different cultures and tradition, we call Malaysia as the melting pot of different races and customs... we have variety of meals with influences from the east and west, we have Peranakan that donned kebaya and make it in their own ways, the Jawi Peranakan culture, we have henna culture in Malay etc.,and lots of borrowed words we use in our daily life comes from tamil and hokkien and mandarin.. I really find this beautiful.. cause this is part that made Malaysia, Malaysia..

As a malay i pun observed some of us has too much negative issues in our secret thought which i experienced during childhood, i saw my friend kena buli sbb dia mix india melayu... Luckily in my kampung society we all were educated to respect and celebrate the differences. Understanding others culture wont change your race but a way to draw a bridge, to get closer. OMG, I was thinking the same thing. Like, my dad was asking me why the Hallmark series only have white actors. But then, I was waiting for the news on TV3 and realized, that there were barely any other ethnicities represented in the prime time Malay dramas to which I never realized before my dad asked me the question. A lot of things came to mind on why this is happening. I really hope Malaysians, specifically the Malay majorities would open up to have these "difficult" conversations on representation and other things.

YES! YES! YES! I've literally been saying this for years. Indians is a nationality and a not a race/ethnicity. I never say Indian, I always call myself Malaysian Tamil. At the end of the same I'm not the same as a Punjabi or Marathi from India as we don't even have the same customs or language. I'm a Tamil! A race or ethnicity are people who share common practices , beliefs, and/or languages! People need to learnt this.
There are 2 ways to view this. One is like you said it, you can represent yourself through ethnicity or if you want you can also use Indian since you are also acknowledging that your ancestors belongs to that particular region. If someone asks what kind of Indian you are, then you can mentioned which ethnicity you are from. I feel Indian can be used as a nationality or a race. Indian is the set and your ethnicity is a subset of it.
It is the same issue among the Malays. We do have different ethnicity as well. But to conclude us in one big set, we are just being regarded as Malay in general. And we are okay with it. We do have minorities subgroups within Malay such as Peranakan Samsam, Peranakan Jawi, Bugis, Jawa, Banjar, etc and all of these have different customs and language as well.

2. There is also the race aspect of it. Where having ancestors from the region and being the original descendants of the region is also an identity called Indian.
3. There is also the genetic similarity angle, where people within certain regions have similar genetic traits like certain mitochondrial haplogroups more closely related to each other compared to the ones that are further away. And yes you are right on the earth race thing as well.
4. We are all part of the human race. It's just that within the human race there are variations and some are more closely related to each other genetically compared to others.
5. And these are the larger groups for example Marathi,Tamil and so on are part of the Indian race. While Indian is also a subset of the Asian race, which in turn is a subset of the human race containing Whites,Blacks and the rest.
6. I'm not saying you are wrong, i'm saying that there is another way to view this which is why both ways are acceptable.

Can we normalise calling Malaysian Chinese as 'Orang Hua' and Malaysian Indian as 'Orang Desi'? Because saying 'Malaysian Chinese/Indian' sounds like they have two nationalities.
AFAIK, their ancestors identified as Tang or Han, and never Hua. Desi is also not a Dravidian word. It's used by Hindustani speakers. The equivalent of "orang desa kita".
Accurately it should be reffered as orang Han and Orang Tamil, Malayali, Telugu, Punjabi etc.

But I was so suprised when one day, my lecturer told us that the discrimination based in kasta still persist within the Malaysian Indian community.
She had a fried from a lower kasta (probably, the untouchable) and one day, her granpa realise about their friendship. Instead of praisibg her for befriending the lower kasta, he forbid her from meeting the friend again.
But she also told that such thing is no longer or rarely practice by the younger generation.
I thought that there is no such thing in Malaysia.

It's okay to wear other cultures costumes. . In Singapore every 21st July we have Racial Harmony Day. Its an event to promote understanding of different ethnicity and culture of different races. We are encouraged to come to school in different ethnicity costumes. So we had alot of Malay people wearing Chinese and traditional Indian costumes as well. Not an issue to address. Everyone is happy and we understand each culture's more better. So, having such tolerance and understanding of one another is important.

I have mix Indian blood from my paternal Nenek side who I have my great great grandfather he is name Gulam Maideen come from India, I do have elephant decorations and wear Indian clothes in appropriate times as cultural event only. So am I culturally appropriating

As a Singapore Malay person here when I have already indian mix from my paternal grandmother who have maternal grandfather Gulam Maidin come from India (Madras) explained by my dad and Nenek. Am I cultural appropriating about researching back her indian roots, wear a gold border Vesthi only appropriate to Indian festival events, wearing my white plain cotton Lungi at home, have my four legged Indian ethnic elephant decoration as my shelf collections as I love elephants as with this indian mix blood it’s too part of my diverse roots and even decorate my room with Diwali deco during Deepavali times. I want to have my wife to be Indian Muslim.
But I don’t wear Bindi Puttu because it’s for Hindus, I don’t public wear a turban because it’s only for Indian grooms, special events and Sikhs, Toe rings is for marriage people, I cannot be speaking to every Indian person Tamil language right because I’m am not full Indian but mix, I cannot be keeping Hindu god photos as It’s only for Hindus.
Now I am willing to research more about my paternal grandmothers indian roots. Is that wrong appropriation
Not all non Indians get understanding and exposure to Indian culture by Bollywood, some like myself after discovering that we or I have indian mix ancestry from one of our grandparents then we unlock go on researching and ask learning into Indian culture.

Rather that what school you go, what you learn matter. I went to kebangsaan school my whole life and i know a lot about malay culture and islam. I even memorized doa makan and doa pagi because i heard it to often but my friend don't even know why i celebrate deepavali.
I got A+ in SPM Sejarah. We studied our ass off in ketuanan melayu and world history Tamadun islam. All of us minority do that. But what other learn about us is very less limited. I remember sejarah coverage of tamadun indus is not even 2 pg.

International n private schools are common worldwide..so no issue there.. even national syllybus are offered in private school..

OMG seriously ? I just know about it by watch this video cus I dont open twitter that often. I think this issues is insignificant anymore but we already merdeka for 63 years .... All tho i already graduet from high school but back in the days I was in high school, we us student will wear traditional outfits from other races traditional outfit for our special occasion (Non religion occasion) like hari merdeka, hari kebangsaan n more . I was malay so i already wear kadazan outfit, bidayuh outfit, & melanau outfit. I only wear baju melayu for religon occasion like ceramah n want so ever.
Should not being an issue.. It just costume.
