- Grateful Dead perform an amazing Dark Star into China Doll.
This whole show was played through the mighty Wall of Sound and can be streamed here [upgrade by Charlie Miller] : www.archive.org/details/gd1974...

I first heard this on 5/14/22 driving along a foggy highway as Weather Report Suite played. It oozed into Dark Star and I looked around laughing as it deconstructed into some unintelligible madness. But I wondered if for some people this brought up some heavy stuff. China Doll isn't particularly the most uplifting of tunes, but I didn't cry the two times I listened to this. My eyes welled up at first, but I blinked away the pooling tears and I just listened and let it be. The second time I listened I was in my bed with headphones, rainshowers soaking the night. I remember I put off listening to it again and dove into 9/21/72 Dark Star first, thinking these were a bit of a downer in the morning. But LET ME TELL YOU. Wow, this was like a continuous mind-orgasm. Pretty special. All sorts of fun psychological and physical levels of delight. Wish you were here!
I have loved both of these recordings so much , it touches my heart strings ! ❤️🐰🐇🌹✨💀☠️💕💞⚡️⭐️☄️🌟🌙🪭🥰
Was goin on 10 years old this day. Could feel The Wall of Sound beckoning me…..finally walked into my 1st show 8 years later & was a changed man, for the better….The Band like a chameleon, constantly changing, adapting….2 of my favorite songs…Jerry’s voice so soothing here
Dave's pick 9 love this one thanks 😊❤
As a minor fanatic of Dark Stars, I'll second what Doug said a while back. Most of them are pretty damn good, but this one is just off the chain! Epic '74 jazz-inflected spaciness with a great deal of subtle but brilliant interplay between the band members- a standout interpretation. And of course the show as a whole is a great one from a great era.
And hats off to Charlie Miller for his work on the recording!
Hello everyone, I can't believe my ears, what an incredible piece of music this is. Is there anything out their today that can even come close to this? I don't think so. Thank you grateful dead for this, it does my soul good. I will always be a fan till I breath my last, deadhead to the end.
I’m with u on that Deadhead until I’m dead ! ❤️🐇🐰🌹✨💀☠️💕🪭
I have to say this is up there on my top 5 favorites.Dark stars 2 24 74 winterland Is my favorite!!!!
Tears r coming now for me ! 💧💦🫧🌊rushing in !
I've never really thought of Phil as being underrated. Most bass players know what he was and is. To me, it's always been Bobby who was underrated. No one -- and I mean no one -- plays guitar like him. A true true original. But clearly Phil was as important as any of them in making the Dead sound.
Never thought of Phil as underrated, but nobody in rock music played bass like him either. He played (and plays) so loose within the songs. He's early, he's late, he plays jazz, he plays straight. You have to listen to huge sections of what he's playing in a song to really understand it, and by then he's on to the next long, intricate thought.
So true!
His cord changes are unique to say the least
Wolf brother dark star explains it All
@@dumbstupid5065 just my opinion but the closest person, of all widely known bassists, would be Jack Casady in his own style but I get the closest sense from his playing. No one comes close to Phil, even in his years of mass drinking and coke use and losing the "faith" a bit. I've had to cancel more Dead and company shows and return or pass on tix and I really do like O'Teil and what he brings but I will always miss the Jerry and Phil strength and the bond they had throughout the different keyboard players. I can see that Bobby has strengthened his playing into something much more capable than just background "color" but what I loved about Bobby was he could and would play chords and trippy things NO OTHER "RYTHM guitarist " would even think of. Jerry, Phil, keys would swirl my brain and Phil's bass was great when in that sweet spot and keys and drumming made things better but it was Bobby who made my skull feel like silly putty. Of course added ingredients in my mind but only Bobby would trigger them in ways that found me sitting as to not get tipped over. Lol. Damn, I miss those days and nights.
U have ur third eye going to work on this ! So incredible ! ❤️🐇🐰🌹🌟☄️⭐️⚡️🌙✨💀☠️🪭💕🗡️🩸😍🥰😘

Sweetness
By 74 I had left Springfield and was living in Cooke. We drove 8 hours to Missoula. I had last seen the Dead at Skinners Butte in 69 and left all that shit far behind. Why I doubled back is my problem. The crowd was mostly looped out goners high on testosterone bad acid worse Montana puthey and the same old walleyed owsley sound. Duck Soup was the high light. Self absorption and ca caa ca co caine.... daus..
26:41 China Doll begins
Everything is nothing but nothing is everything so what’s up or down ? Sideways , inside out , back to back ! Ying Yang
19:50 Jerry doing his Jimi Hendrix impersonation, I can just see him playing the guitar with his teeth
