This is THE best & most direct video I’ve seen on reel to reel calibration. I just bought new calibration tapes & I’ve just started teaching myself restoration on an old Teac A-2300SX. Took if completely apart & cleaned & lubed everything. New belts & pinch roller. I’m at this point now on my restoration & I really appreciate you taking your time to make these videos.
    All the best to you!!

Those 2300 series machines are great. All the work you're putting in restiring the deck will pay huge dividends. Please post videos of the finished product - I'd love to see your handiwork. Thanks for the kind words , James & best of luck with your future restorations. Matt

Bigg Matt Yes, they are! I bought it for €50 & it had been sitting for about 30 years in an old basement. Dusty as can be & the heads looked like they’d never been cleaned. You can imagine what I found inside of it.😣😂 But Man, it’s been a real joy working on it. Years ago I owned a Teac 80-8 in my first studio. I loved it, but it was destroyed in shipping.😞 I replaced it with a Tascam TSR-8 & it’s still great. My home decks are an Akai GX-255, my late Dads Sansui SD-7000 & for recording concerts & Jazz jams an UHER 4200 Report. I never dared to touch the insides of ANY of them until 2 techs messed up the calibration & alignment on the Akai & Sansui. After that I promised myself to learn to repair them. Man, your videos really inspired me today... So just before your reply, I bought a Ferrograph Recorder Test Set RTS 2!!👊🏾😄 I’m on a mission!!😄 Man, you’re my new mentor!!👊🏾😄
I’ll be posting the before & afters & I’ll be bugging you to learn this like the Pro that you are! Thanks again for everything! You’re a Blessing, my Brother!!👊🏾👊🏾

@@SimpsonSound You found a Ferrograph RTS? I love those things. I know there are a gazillion other pieces of test equipment that could do the job, better even, , but that RTS2 is my favorite. I've had all those machines at one point, I still have the GX-255 that I've been toying with for the past year - or ten:-) I'm presently going through my Pioneer units: 4 RT-1011Ls, 5 1020Ls, a 1020H, 2 1050s then I'm gonna focus on the stack of 707s and 909s. I'm finding it more productive to stick with one model is restorations that to bounce back 'n forth between brands. Always good to meet others who have gone bonkers with accumulating R2Rs eq. Brothers indeed, friend. Keep in touch.

Bigg Matt Bigg Matt Yes, I found one today. When I saw that that’s what you were using I started searching for it. I live in Germany now & they have an alternate EBay site. I got it for €120. It was owned by a former tech that retired.
You’re right about sticking to one. It would be easier. I just didn’t want to experiment with the Akai & Sansui. My late Dad bought the Sansui after his 4th tour to Vietnam. As a kid, I was drawn to it & it’s the reason I’m a musician to this day. He gave it to me when I returned from my 1st tour in Iraq in 1991. I gave him a Pioneer 909 in return. I actually still have that back in the States & I’ll restore it when I go back. I bought the Akai for myself when I was in Germany. I’ve owned 2 of them (black & silver). They are amazing machines when set up right. Mine is current making this gushing wind sound (like white noise) after it returned from the tech... I’ve got to get it straight.
Man, it’s great to meet you. It is refreshing to meet another “Real” Brother!!👊🏾👊🏾 Let’s keep in touch!

@@SimpsonSound Germany is my old stompin' ground. I picked up my 1st r2r in Berlin back in '81. I still have it - albeit on life support. I was in Weisbaden in the early 90s. I go back to visit every few years. Keep me posted on the restorations, bro. Peace

I have a Teac A-3440 in near mint condition. The only thing that is not working correctly is the recording mode. When you have an line-in tone signal at 0dB and record this and you play back there is a big difference between the two signals. This is the case on all 4 channels. The differences in signal strength also seems to be the same for all 4 channels. Is there a quick and easy way to bring the two signals back to the same level? Tia.
