I know you cannot make a vlog everyday, but I look for them everyday. Your youtube channel is my favorite thing to watch..there is nothing better than your vlog on youtube, tv, or netflix in my opinion. I just love your channel- so thank you for all the work that goes into making these vlogs. Many blessings to you and your beautiful family. (PS I loved the music at the beginning of the video as well)

Super excited that you are planning to get a heifer. I would personally love to donate towards the new cow. Another suggestion after you purchase your future milk cow is, if its not breed yet, you could use stud muffins ( Justin Rhodes bull ) for breeding. I know Justin and Rebecca wouldn't mind having another cow with the bull.looking forward to it.

Thanks for showing the tobacco field. I grew up on a tobacco farm in Person County, NC . Then you're right it was the central crop back in the 60's when I was a teen. Never chewed it right out of the field, but yep after it had been cured. I can close my eyes and smell that unique aroma of a barn just opened up after its curing time to air so the leaves would moisten so they could be handled. Back then miles of those could be seen. Thanks for sharing that.

Tobacco used to be a big cash crop in the CT river valley here in Massachusetts..I actually worked in a tobacco field one summer while in high school. We would work tieing up the plants as they grew , then the would be chopped down and hung in the layered rafters of the tobacco barns to dry before being shipped off ..tobacco is gone and after the fields rested for many years they have become productive veggie producers..so much nicer..thx for sharing your experience as well...blessings to you all...

Sometimes we need to be thankful for that one who survived. Ahhhh, if one step behind, is one too many, then hubby & I are in trouble. Just keep on keeping on & do the best you can. You are behind because of a baby, we are behind because of surgery. You do what you can & that is good.

Thanks for sharing the ups and downs of farming. The dead duckling is kind of tragic when you consider it was baby, no threat really. I do admire how green it is there. Thanks for showing us the tobacco. I found an old cigarette of my dad's. No one was home so I lit it off the gas stove, stepped out of the kitchen door and took a puff. Of course I got sick, think I turned green. That was the first and last.

They're still growing tobacco. There are fields of it just down the street from our daughter's house in Willow Springs, NC. I was really surprised to see so much of it. The same field was planted with soy beans when I was there at Christmas and sweet potatoes before that. I loved being able to pick up sweet potatoes after the initial pick was done. Your yard and garden are so beautiful. I miss NC so much. I'm sitting in the house because it's 106° here in CA today and it will be hot and dry for the next few days.

Are you accepting donations for the new cow's purchase? I think the idea of getting a heifer is great. A bottle fed calf will be very gentle. If bred, pick a smaller variety so there will be no problems in her first birth. Year's ago it was not uncommon to breed Hereford heifers to Angus bulls.Look forward to your progress!

Be sure to check out the hooves when you go look at a cow. The hoof wall should NOT be rolled under the hoof. Between the hooves should be semi clean, they should not be thrushy or really bad smelling. A cow can go lame just as well as a horse. There shouldn't be any sores. A happy healthy cow makes good milk. If you can find a farrier that trims cows, it might be worth finding out if the farrier can eather go with you or meet you there.

I'm glad Tobacco is so scarce now. Its nice to actually see and hear how little of it is left compared to the years before. Having a grandparent pass from complications, due to its use, has made me not the fondest of the crop (understatement). And sadly I know I am not alone on these feelings. Wasn't expecting to see this in your video, I am pleasantly surprised and happy with this video (and here I thought I'd be horribly upset with the ducklings passing on and such).

While tobacco consumption IS down in the US since the 80's (maybe 60's) part of the reason for less being grown here is because of the shift away from domestic tobacco to cheaper imported tobacco especially from brazil.

I agree with everything you said in your comment, katnip2u! I love Art and Bri's videos!!! The way they make the videos is so masterful, beautiful and inspirational. And it's not just about capturing the moment, which they do so very well, but mixing it up, long shots with close-ups, interspersed with other situational shots and moments, making it into a story, creating suspense, ETC. Truly a piece of "Art" and Bri and the FAMILY! So lovely on so many levels. My soul gets elevated and my heart sings every time I watch their videos. I'm so so grateful that they let us participate in their life's adventures, challenges, ups and downs, and everything else, WOW!!!

Dee Nova - Thanks for confirming! I appreciate this family's life and their cool videography, the love, dedication and effort they put into everything they do, just amazing. I hope they know they're loved and cherished by many !! I work in landscaping in Toronto now, also have a great urban "community" garden (on the condo grounds, very lucky the management lets me cultivate some of the ground around our condo building with veggies, herbs, non-typical landscaping flowers like sunflowers, hollyhocks, etc.), just in waiting to purchase my own land and have a home sweet homestead of my own! Much love your way too :)

    • @deenova366
      @deenova366 6 лет назад

katnip2u, that's great that you get to do that around your condo building. Is that normal for people to do community gardening around condo buildings in Toronto? I'm also saving to have my own homestead, hopefully next year! It makes such a difference to one's life to grow your own veggies, have your own eggs, meat, and to raise kids with the awareness of where your food comes from. And so much more! It's educational and spiritual also, at least that's how I see it. Blessings to you in whatever you're up to!!!

Art, if you and Bri put some of those herbs in a paper bag, fold over the top about and inch and put the PAPER bag in your car for a few days, the herbs will dry well and can be saved for winter. Use a snap close pin to close the top. The herbs will not fade and will stay in great condition. I am surprised you were able to still buy a scythe. Forget Tabasco. North Carolina is nearly as pretty as upstate New York. I live in not so pretty Texas. I know Bri is missing Dolly. God bless American. I have had the drake attack my ducklings. I had to learn the hard way. Mama and babies, no drakes.

It will be interesting how the new scythe works. It looks lighter than wood but that may cause it to loose momentum when it strikes weeds (with the same bite as with a wood version). If I used one of those I'd need a Motrin sandwich for lunch.

When we either take up eggs from a hen that's been setting or if we have been incubating, we throw the unhatched eggs to the hogs. By throwing those eggs into the edge of your woods you've invited predators that might then come looking for more into your chicken/duck pens. I don't know much about ducks but if we put biddies into the chicken pen after hatching them in the incubator, we always wait until they're at least a month old. Then, we watch them carefully to make sure the other chickens aren't pecking them. It does take a couple days for them to assimilate into the flock. I know if we allow a hen to set, when she hatches out her brood she tends to keep to herself instead of going straight back to her flock. But gradually, as her biddies get older, she start easing herself and her brood back in. I've never heard of drakes killing the babies before. That makes me curious.

Today July 8 2018 I received a video from someone I watch "A chick named Albert". His channel is about saving and hatching all kinds of birds. You might like to see his latest about hatching some rare ducks. I don't think you can participate in that project but perhaps you can get some tips about hatching baby ducks like Grace wants. He candles eggs with his smart phone light. Just a thought.I really love your channel too.

That's true, If he was bread he would never be able to rise to the occasion. At yeast that's what I think. I wonder what happened with the other broody duck???

I'm so sorry about the other duckling. Same thing just happened to me with a hen and her two chicks. Fine for two days then dead in the pen. I suspect one of the hens got them. They didn't bother other chicks I had in there before. Live and learn. :-( I lost them both. Next time I'll build a pen in a pen like you did.

Bless the little duckling :/ good job you noticed before the other one was attacked, Is Donald a jealous duck? and do they only protect the chickens as they see them not as a threat? Fabulous cucumbers by the way, I have some growing in a washing up bowl out on a table in my garden lol Keep safe all ad until ext time, peace to all :D

Donald is a guard goose. Most likely will never know absolutely what happened to the duckling. They are so fragile when first hatched. Good question

wendy drennan I believe the common practice is to keep chicks/ducklings from the main flock till 8 weeks of age before integrating with adult flocks. Even at 8 weeks fatalities can happen. Most commonly from establishing pecking order.
