I'm from Austria (Europe) and most people don't seem to care where you walk, probably because we have a lot of dedicated hiking routes. If people have a problem they'll usually put some shields like "private road/property". We often hike on pastures next to cows and nobody cares. Sometimes you have to be careful no to accidentally step on the cows when they're chilling on the grass and there isn't much space lol. I don't know what's wrong with some people in the UK (and US). Of course, you don't randomly walk in someone's fenced backyard right next to their house, but that's not why these farmers are mad.
The only issues we face are that some hikers are stupid, in the sense that they want to take selfies with cows, ride them, put their kids on them, etc. That's why you see more and more shields that prohibit people to hike with their dogs, since cows see them as a danger. Farmers don't want to be held accountable for their cows attacking hikers with dogs.
PS: I have to admit that I tend to hike/walk at places that are public trails, no idea how it's at other places, but at the same time, most of Austria is like a massive hiking route. I know one place where a farmer put shields that state "private property", because too many people's went for a walk on his private land. So it's no like they are pursuing you with their quad or anything...

Equivalent laws to Scotland's SOAC need to be introduced. As for the farmer he has duty of care to the folk on his land and his abusive attitude does him no favours.

It's crazy how people like you are so okay with 92% of land being totally cutoff from traversal (in UK). Obviously, private space is good, and so it makes perfect sense why buildings, like houses, are totally private. However, an open field with absolutely nothing in it? Why can't I walk across it? Because a bad actor might, um, poison the grass? It's nonsensical that such privatization can extend so far. Sure, they can own the land and have exclusive rights to build, graze, grow, etc. on it, but others should be allowed to traverse it as long as they cause no harm or break no other laws.

These laws regarding trespassing shouldn't be there in the first place. In most cases a guy walking through a field in broad daylight has no intentions in stealing animals/damaging property.
