I think they were looking at each other out of sheer curiosity. Until this scene, Ford never got to see what Godzilla truly is like while Godzilla never got to see what a human truly is like.
The way Ford looks at him is like he's just in awe of this creature. A moment where the fighting stops just for a second to show there's a little soul behind those eyes, which have great detail put on them as well. Of course, Godzilla's thinking to himself while looking at Ford "Weren't you in Kick-Ass?"
***** Let's not forget that on top of that, in this continuity, Godzilla's at least 60 years old; he's an old fella. He's in no way a gimpy old codger, but he ain't no young buck, either.
Remember earlier in the film when Serizawa tells Ford about Godzilla? Ford refers to him as a monster, implying that he sees him as no different to the one that killed both of his parents. I imagine he's having second thoughts in this scene
@@lonewolfgamingplus379 And Godzilla looks at him and he's like, "Oh hi. I don't normally look at humans because they just keep trying to kill me. But I see your hurt and worn out like me, trying to save your species, I've always been with you since I first showed up. Don't worry, I'll get up soon."
Around that moment when Godzilla and Ford looked at each other,it almost felt like that they were feeling each others pain and that time was running out for both of them.
RyanGuardianRanger if you think about it, they both have one thing in common. Their families were killed by the same species they are fighting. Say what you want about the human characters or Ford. But I always thought that Ford is a more interesting character than any other human character, other than Serizawa (original 54), in the films. Maybe he doesn't do much but he and Godzilla are one of the same in a weird way.
Him and also Joe Brody. Sad he was killed off earlier, I would have love to see a scene with him and serizawa having a discussion about their obsession with "their" monsters.
In a melancholic way, this feels touching in a way. Godzilla is always viewed as indestructible, unmatched, unrivalled- but when he's laying on the floor tired and half-beaten we almost see a gentle, benevolent side to him. I can't find the exact words to express my overall thoughts, but I say this is the most human Godzilla we've encountered that hasn't bordered on the lines of pure anthropomorphism, showing us a side to the king of the monsters that even a king has times of feeling small.
Yes, very good moment in the film, showing that while Godzilla does not care for humans as in a loving way, he does acknowledge their presence on his territory and bears no ill feelings towards them.
Considering Godzilla was nuked several times without repercussions, I would say he is above and beyond human's capacity for caring ...as odd as that may sound. At least for Ford, he did notice a kind of "saved you big guy" thing going on between the look in his eyes.
oh the nukes were weak and at best they probably blinded godzilla... similar to how a camera flash blinds us. I am sure he knew they were trying something to hurt him but saw humans as scared little things.
When Godzilla & Brody look at each other at 1:30, they are both thinking this about the other: "Wow......maybe you really aren't a Monster after all...."
i love how beat up he gets, just because hes the king of the monsters doesn't mean hes going in there and wipes the floor with them, he actually got his ass beat at one point,so its nice to see here and at the very end, how human he looks, just stumbling, staying up trying not to faint, definitely adds some soul to this titanic creation
It really feels like that's the first time Godzilla takes a moment to like...consider the humans, think about them, how if he fails, what could happen to them. Before he just kinda ignored the humans, but maybe he grows some affection towards them.
I personally think that in this scene, the reason Godzilla gives Brody that look is because he realized he was the one that destroyed the Muto's nest and gave Godzilla the advantage to fight back. Right before hes engulfed in the dust cloud, we see Godzilla stop bearing his teeth and it almost looks like he gives Brody a small nod aknowledging him, probably thinking "You were the one that did that, thank you." Very moving scene between our two main protagonists.
Yeah Godzilla does have a brain and eyes, people forget that he actually does go out of his way not to harm humans but does know that if he didn't try to kill the MUTOS, humans and everything could be killed. Everyone came to the same conclusion after seeing this and the director was smart using this... Too bad we don't get more close ups with Godzilla the same we do with Kong.

King of the Monsters, Guardian of Earth, Godzilla is one of our best anti-heroes. Anything that fights him isn't even in a fight, they are in a time trial to see how long until Godzilla kills his enemies. Inevitable death is certain.
Does anyone know what the song that's playing on the screen when Godzilla and ford looking at each other is from cause it's not on the Alexander display
You know I can agree on that actually, it does look like if he was going to say thanks to ford for destroying the M.U.T.O nest and gave Godzilla the advantage.
I can't believe all the hate this movie has. This was a GREAT monster movie! It was MUCH MORE worthy of Godzilla than the AWFUL 1998 film. Godzilla had about as much screen time in this movie as he did in the original 1954 film, and several more of later films showed the monsters he fought more than him. Where were the haters THEN?! Sure I wish Bryan Cranston had a bigger role, but that far from destroyed the movie. The haters are such WHINERS.
Perhaps, for the first and only time, one creature out of the countless that came and went while Godzilla endured over the ages, will earn its everlasting recognition, if not respect. After all, said creature distracted the MUTOS by blowing up their nest, inadvertently saving Godzilla from being mauled by them and turning the fight back in its favor.
It's like Ford destroyed the nest to save Godzilla from dying, thus when the female MUTO was about to kill Ford, Godzilla stepped in and killed the Muto. Godzilla: now we're even.
Thing is probably in Godzilla 2 Godzilla might be a lot pissed if the army starts shooting him again and Godzilla starts destroying buildings and the army. Or Godzilla 2016 they will probably mention that there is another Godzilla aka the american one and say it isn't friendly and could cause destruction.
Don't judge me but when I watched this scene (without the health bars) coz I had watched the full film, I literally cried my eyes out, because I had thought that Godzilla had gave his life to save the people
Godzilla is maybe a monster in appearance, but inside, he's much more than that. A force of nature and a guardian of the balance of the earth. We can say a god indeed. I think this Godzilla is my favorite. He is shown as a hero, not as a destroyer. Even if he does not care about humans, he is aware of their existence and fights in a way for them, because without him, humanity would be exterminated. It's a rather tragic character when you think about it: lonely, misunderstood, and yet fighting and suffering by saving a people that is not his. A creature far more human than most humans are.
Ford just keeps going after the smoke covers Godzillas face like "If I can't see him, he can't see me." I'd still be freaked the heck out that there is a massive freaking monster like ten metres away...
what gets me every time is how godzilla gives the male muto a look, almost like saying "I didn't want to do this" almost like he feels bad in a sort of way
1:20- I think Gareth Edwards was trying to draw a parallel between this scene and the scene at the beginning when Dr. Brody lost his wife 15 years ago.
Remember Ford helped Godzilla earlier in the movie by distracting one of the MUTOS by burning down their nest giving him a better chance of winning against the other one. So at this point he knew he could trust Ford and that is why 1:20 is so powerful.
way how I saw it... Godzilla here being the equivalent to a 60 year old man still trying to prove he has alot of fight in him but time catching up to him. poke at this if you want, i say it's more poetic.
Godzilla:Ford, you risked your life to destroy the Mutos eggs. Ford:No sacrifice, no victory. Godzilla:Now go, get the missile out of the city as possible.
I haven't seen anyone entertain the idea that maybe this was Ford's mother looking at her son, through Godzilla? Godzilla is often depicted as being made from the souls of people who died due to nuclear radiation or war. Cranston even even says in the movie "your mother is still out there somewhere!". Godzilla just saved Ford's ass and then for some reason, kneels down to look at a single tiny human like... well, a proud mother.
Samoutuomas He didn't kneel down, he was struggling after having that building fall on him but your theory is still persuasive... I never even considered that. I would lean towards that theory more than anything.
The theory is nice but the movie itself states it can't be true. Godzilla is a creature that has been around millenia. Before humanity and atomic weapons etc. They state in the movie that they were fighting godzilla all the way back in the 50 ' s. Long before his mother died. I get the impression they were trying to suggest godzilla is extremely intelligent In a primal sense. It understood ford had helped it but maybe not how exactly.
Ordinary gamer96 The Godzilla bones they found were very old and the one that they awaken is most likely the Godzilla they had tried to nuke dozens of times. Their life expectancy is unknown and if there was a match between Godzilla and Mutos (which is how they found the bones of another dead Godzilla) then they would have known about it back in the 60s. Those bones had been there quite a long time and the eggs only finally woke up. The Godzilla we saw in the movie in every scene is the only living one in recorded history but like they said, they can go into hibernation and plus they usually dwell at the deepest parts of the ocean. Only 3 people have ever been to the very bottom; Challenger Deep.
***** When the Muto spotted Ford, Godzilla probably did to but used the distraction perfectly to lay down some atomic breath. After finishing half the fight, he must have realized the fight is not just Godzilla vs Mutos, it is Ford and humans vs Mutos. Wow the meanings from that few seconds of eye contact has opened up so many doors to the philosophy of Godzilla.
***** Yep you are spot on (about the "eye contact opening doors to the philosophy of Godzilla"), it's such a great thing. I interpret this film and some of it's subtle moments my own way as seen in my original comment, everyone else has their own but they're all equally valid. Such an incredible moment in the film. They did it intentionally as to make it very open but not annoying or mysterious like many other films and TV-shows these days seem to do.
"Aww, man, I'm too old for this crap. (sees Ford) Hey, you puny humans, try to stay out my way, and try not to wake up any more monsters, okay? I need a break, sheesh!"
***** I too really liked the mutos design, the way they looked reminded me a bit of gigan with the eyes and hands/feet. Though I think more people will prefer the sequel since rodan, ghidorah and mothra are said to be in the film
Lukas Johansson I absolutely loved the design, the the point that I couldn't stop remarking on it every time they showed up. I say Muto fits in pretty well with the other Godzilla monsters. Though I can't wait to see King Ghidorah in the sequel.
I think what's going on inside both of these monsters' brains as they prepared to give each other the finishing blow. The Male MUTO flies around after being thrown across by Godzilla. Male MUTO: I. WILL. SKEWER. YOU! For destroying our future... our children...and for burning my wife, you murderous bastard! The male MUTO zooms in towards Godzilla and the reptile snarled. Godzilla then rotates his body and... Godzilla: HAH! Skewer on... Godzilla's tail suddenly slammed into the MUTO into the building, impaling him on a sharp debris. Godzilla: ...THIS! The MUTO dies. Godzilla: Stick around, chump.
I am all for weakening Godzilla to the point where he nearly dies but comes back to life more powerful than before... but if they kill him off.... well then I do believe there would be rioting.
I love Godzilla I just find him sooo cute he is amazing I can't say how I feel when I watch godzilla it just looks so realistic and the graphics is amazing he looks sooooo real compared to the first ever films of him and he has gotten much bigger since the first ever film

*****
Yep you are spot on (about the "eye contact opening doors to the philosophy of Godzilla"), it's such a great thing. I interpret this film and some of it's subtle moments my own way as seen in my original comment, everyone else has their own but they're all equally valid. Such an incredible moment in the film. They did it intentionally as to make it very open but not annoying or mysterious like many other films and TV-shows these days seem to do.
Love it how he slams the Muto monster with his tail impaling it on the building,AWESOME!!!
Amazing battle sequence. Truly shows Godzilla's power, and also a new side.
You guys rock. What do you think was going on inside the head of Godzilla during that period?
boy could i use a redbull
"You think this is bad, you shoulda seen the time Titanosaurs buried me alive. He pissed on the mound; I made sure that bastard suffered."
I think he was thinking, “Oh Fucking Shit!"
"dafuq u lookin at"
He's problably like "You're letting me do all the work help me out fucker". That's what.
Godzilla: sorry ford you need to finish it now
Way to go, Ford! You just got yourself a friend for life!
I love coming to a video where all of the people who liked the movie can talk and speculate about it in piece :)
finally, something in good quality, well, better then most.
Not gonna lie I cried when the big guy got engulfed with dust...
😔
It feels like one of those moments where you wonder what the ant beneath you is thinking.
What's funny is that he caused the building to collapse on him.
"Aww, man, I'm too old for this crap. (sees Ford) Hey, you puny humans, try to stay out my way, and try not to wake up any more monsters, okay? I need a break, sheesh!"
Am I the only one who loves how the muto looks?
***** I too really liked the mutos design, the way they looked reminded me a bit of gigan with the eyes and hands/feet. Though I think more people will prefer the sequel since rodan, ghidorah and mothra are said to be in the film
Lukas Johansson I absolutely loved the design, the the point that I couldn't stop remarking on it every time they showed up. I say Muto fits in pretty well with the other Godzilla monsters. Though I can't wait to see King Ghidorah in the sequel.
This scene reminds me that I am more emotionally attached to Godzilla than I am to most humans...
And that is how Quicksilver and Godzilla look eye-to-eye.
godzilla was trying to relax because that thing was annoying 😢
As godzilla is looking at the man, godzillas thoughts turn into " I NEED AN AMBULANCE" Godzilla says.
I see the light, is Glorious!
To that building falling on Godzilla, it was like being crushed by a vending machine
Lol you know that is actually a common thing....
@@Ozzywozzy yeah I know, but just imagine being crushed by a vending machine every time you come out of bed
@@NLE_Tj999as long as it's Doritos I'm good

Godzilla weights 90,000 tons. That building should have been nothing for him.
He was fighting two Mutos and he was wounded.
That building was much taller and much wider than Godzilla.
Godzilla: oops my bad...(knocks down a building by accident).
I love muto he was rude to me so i killed him...like the rest of my freinds
Godzilla king your still cool:)
I felt like I was watching a Heisei Godzilla movie when i saw this. Fucking great :')
I would never cry over a Godzilla movi... well I stand corrected
This is my favorite scene of the movie
Well at least he didn't really die in the movie
What happened if he will die :| idc
***** Not if another Godzilla rose up from the ocean and it turns out that the one that died was a female.
If god zilla died there would be to many tears
I am all for weakening Godzilla to the point where he nearly dies but comes back to life more powerful than before... but if they kill him off.... well then I do believe there would be rioting.
Even though he's mad old, I get the impression that Godzilla would be a cool ass human being.
Deep thoughts about the majestic aside, I’d probably be thinking; “Must take selfie, please don’t eat me, must take selfie, please don’t eat me....”

Godzilla: Knock knock
Muto: Who's there
Godzilla: ZUUL MUTHA FUCKA!!!!
I love Godzilla I just find him sooo cute he is amazing I can't say how I feel when I watch godzilla it just looks so realistic and the graphics is amazing he looks sooooo real compared to the first ever films of him and he has gotten much bigger since the first ever film
