This project is the result of my work after completing the course "Large Scale Water FX in Houdini" on The Gnomon Workshop, taught by Miguel Perez Senent, a CG Supervisor at Industrial Light & Magic. The course was incredible-I never imagined I could create large-scale water simulations on my home machine in such a short time. Throughout the lessons, I learned how to create water simulations that interact with the ocean spectrum, minimize the data footprint, create an airfield, create a custom whitewater solver, and optimize simulation time without sacrificing detail. For this project, I added my own touches based on existing skills, such as an RBD simulation for a helicopter crash and a pyro simulation for a gas explosion. I also approached the lighting and compositing in a way that better suited my personal workflow. To finish, I re-exported all the cache files along with the necessary attributes for shading in .usd and .vdb formats, then brought them into Blender, my main DCC software. For simple compositing, I used DaVinci Resolve. While I tried to mimic some of the techniques he used for shading and compositing, my version wasn’t as photorealistic as his. However, I’m very satisfied with the final result, and that’s what matters most to me! For the final touch, I did my own sound design using sound effects from Epidemic Sound to make it a little more engaging. Many thanks to @MiguelPerezSenent and @gnomonworkshop for providing such a great course!

This looks more real than most cgi I’ve seen in movies lately. Even down to how the eel moves is really lifelike.
