The Saudi Arabian Football Project is Done?

- Last summer we saw a shift in the world of football as the state of Saudi Arabia offered HUGE deals to some of the sport's elite talents - Cristiano Ronaldo, Neymar, Sadio Mané and more. But with players already wanting to leave and return to their former sides, is this the end of the project?? Or just a bump in the road?

They made the same mistake as China - buying into the older player market but it just isn’t sustainable and in the end you have players like Benzema, firmino and Henderson who end up retiring / moving back to Europe
this is not a suprising, there are previous examples before china, a domestic example for me. america had a league called NASL. and this league was an attempt to prop up a national league, and to get the ball rolling, the league decided to recruit Pele to the New York Cosmos. this arrival brought alot of attention to the league and other players from europe followed suit. Franz Beckenbauer, Carlos Alberto, Johan Cruyff, Eusebio, Gerd Müller, Geoff Hurst, Bobby Moore and Giorgio Chinaglia. the reason why NASL failed was because the team owners did not care about the quality of the team and thought that just buying one really good player would get butts in seats like Pele did for the Cosmos. the league did not cracked down on the libertine spending and lack of infrastructure/homegrown investments that the owners were displaying. and just like the SPL, the only teams with the highest attendence was the most successful and finnanically backed team, New York Cosmos. they would get 40k attendence every home game. all the while most teams had a hard time trying to fill up even 1/4 of the stadiums. the Cosmos were essentially a travling circus just like Al-Nassr FC, and they were the only reason the league managed to survive for a few years. the NASL's uncontrolled spending is the main reason why MLS has very restricve finnancial rules in place
How they’er old if they’re returning to Europe?
At least China could keep their stars for a couple seasons after signing them. Saudi pro league signings just did the grandpa Simpson in and out meme
@@Big73Red in china they left when the chinese stopped throwing money at them, in saudi arabia they still get money, but leave regardless. how bad must it be there to reject that kind of money?

You can’t buy football culture.
I genuinely think that older players with no attempt of making the national team are quite comfortable in the Saudi Pro League
They basically have amateur conditions (low attendence, very low defensive skill, decent attack) but with Ballon Dor serial winner wages.
Henderson wants to play the Euros right?
Theres a fair few of them that want to leave now, so I think the culture shock might be getting to a fair few of them.
Its basically the exact same story as China
Nah man, China needed 1 1/2 years to show the first cracks lol
But yeah, otherwise its just a hardcopy of China - on crack.
An authoritarian goverment attepts sportwashing, paying absurd sums while alienating half of the people that were willing to join.
And it will end like China, not because the money runs out: but because they become unwilling to continue spending like this.
They think with some old stars they can get to the elite of football within 5 years and ignore that it takes at least 10 additional years after the first 5 have been successful.
And if you dont know what you are doing, you can send billions down the drain for worse results than before. Todd Bohley knows a thing or two about this.

CR7 is basically the last holdout of the big names that seems to want to stay. I think this season has exposed that league for what it actually is. What I'm really curious to hear are the specifics of why Henderson wanted to leave, considering how much money he's leaving on the table.

We need to give them time. England and stpain and France where football has been around for almost a century are going to have comparatively more attendance than a place where sports itself isn't that common. Now that there are players that are coming to Saudia, they want immediate impact, what i mean by that is, they need the same level of football they used to play. The surroundings are not familiar, the culture is totally different, there are barely any fans. What i am trying to say is that this is a future horizon type of thing where you need to give them time, players, young talents, good coaches, good managers etc. There is a lack of experience in Saudi. Let them be for at least a decade, that is bare minimum. A decade might seem a lot but to gain people's interest in the sport and the football federation to gain some experience and to be trustworthy. The problem in Saudi is the lack of interest by fans. That is by far the biggest problem, secondly, the change in environment is too overwhelming for the outsiders considering the culture. Lastly there is a lack of professionalism. There aren't enough experienced people there. So, give them time, let them be. Don't be so quick to judge.
Ok but the issue is this is not how you build a league, buying older past their prime players and concentrating them to a few clubs is going to have dimishing returns. You have to build up the whole league you cannot have 1 team fill a stadium and the other draw 1000 or less people, even if you give it ten years these non-state funded teams won't grow. You have to invest in the grassroots level football, and build up not only the prymid but also the youth setup, if all you have as your top players are imports it ain't gonna work. Like yes eventually you will have top players from other nations but you need your own players, the prem has Haaland, Salah, De Brunye but it also has Saka, Trent, Rice, Kane (He's gone but it still counts) and so many more
@@sunnycombo5275 so what did I say wrong? I also said they need time to figure their shit out
Bro, you could say that about any league😂Saudi just messed up because they thought buying popular players would grow their football but it didn’t so now they’re in shambles. Maybe instead of having four teams hog all the money, they could try creating a more competitive league.
@@yadatada5556 What's the difference between other leagues and Saudi league? What's the main difference? Money. Finance. The core reason. Professionalism is another reason. Buyin popular players isn't a bad thing is it? Why are you jumping the gun? Let them be, you can't do that? Give them time, they clearly don't know what they are doing so give them time and let them be. Why are you so obsessed with making the Saudi league look like it's already dead. I mean there is a dire need for a proper plan. Everything they do is based on instincts. I think at the end. Everyone can make mistakes, why can't you be a little more forgiving and let things slide. What's the loss for you?
There is your first problem already, *time*. Saudi was getting attention because of their ambition to become a top league in the world by 2030. Of course you can't expect much change so soon but *at this rate it is not going to happen*, the goal itself is already very unrealistic.
Try comparing MLS and JLeague to Saudi PL.
I feel Messi made the better move going to the MLS. Jokes aside, its attendance is among the top ten in the world, and ultimately, the US sports market is an absolute behemoth with no country coming close in terms of revenue. So one can expect that there is much room for growth.
I laugh at all the kids who say the Saudi pro league is “competitive” and “more entertaining than the mls”. Clearly the players disagree which is why they are leaving. 😂
financially his move is probably more lucrative than joining the saudis. at least in the long run. he is getting a share of the club and club values are rising fast in every US sport and the MLS has even more potential for growth than the others. not to mention the potential for endorsement deals in the US vs the ones in saudi arabia

This isn’t the end, don’t let them deceive you. Not yet at least.
The level is actually pretty high. There's a reason why Saudi wiped the floor against Argentina and then argentina got every call their way after that game. I don’t understand why there is so much hate for an upcoming league!!!
I mean all countries are doing the same to make their leagues better, why do you guys have to make it all political?
Because it’s an incredibly corrupt country with awful human rights issues and the league is absolute dog shit apart from a few over the hill players who used to be alright who hate living there and are only there for cash. It’s paying once famous players to effectively retire and play league two level teams.
Because they’re hogging players with money, leagues like Serie a and La liga who produce talent are not able to keep it because these oil teams are taking them
they're just racist and mad that Saudis in one season did what MLS has been trying to do in it's entire existence, even before it was called the MLS
MLS is still a retirement league and Saudi league gets elite names at the end of or still in their prime, such as Neves, Benzema, Mane, Kante, Firmino, Mahrez, Koulibaly, Laporte, Neymar, Fabinho, etc
Those other countries aren't splashing the cash to cover up the fact they put gay people to death in order to make people visit.
@ldope3904 I don't think that you get the whole idea of the MLS. It was never meant to become a type 5 league the same way the Saudi pro league stated was their mission. The MLS was a league meant to help develop the sport of football in America enough to develop enough talent to make an American National team that can compete with the rest the of the world. That has been the entire reason and why they still implement wage limits, unlike the Saudi Pro League who just hasn't developed any sustainable Youth Academies.
So one player left Saudi and the Saudi project is done. You guys are funny!
The Saudi project was done as soon as games started getting 600 people in attendance.
Saudi Arabia might be spending a lot of money but they don’t have unlimited money. They were banking on having significantly more streaming revenue in order to keep the league afloat, if not profitable (because sports washing is their end goal at the end of the day). International audiences don’t care, and neither do domestic audiences, it seems.
The project never started lad, spent copious amounts of oil and blood money on players that are too old to go to decent clubs, even bought cr7 and still have lower attendance than the third league in Germany… it is a shambles, luckily that inbred Saudi royal has unlimited money so he can find something else to gentrify since he doesn’t have a real job😂
That cabbage that lasted longer than Liz Truss as PM is probably also lasting longer than the Saudi Pro League.

Really good video as usual Niran. Love when you can tackle the more serious football topics with levity and insight like this!
The thing is, Saudi Arabia have openly admitted on multiple occasions that their mass investment into all these sports leagues (WWE, F1, Golf, football etc) is purely a PR campaign to promote the country to the world. It has nothing to do with the sporting culture or growing these sports in the country or anything like that, and it's not like they have an audience or fanbase who are desperate to see these sports come to their country, or some big untapped market out there for all these sports to go to and take advantage of all of a sudden. It's all purely monetary and to make Saudi Arabia look more appealing to the rest of the world. Qatar are doing something very similar, and it's not like hosting a World Cup with games in front of half-empty stadiums, built basically by slave labour, where their own national team crashed out in the groups and looked barely Sunday League standard, did anything for football in that country did it?
And if you accuse the Saudi government/royal family of sportswashing, guess what? They don't care. They don't even try to pretend that that's not the entire reason why they're doing all this. Any arguments that 'oh maybe this can help them become more progressive' or anything like that is just BS and hollow platitudes - either Jordan Henderson was being very naive by saying what he did, or he was doing what many others have done and just trying to make some limp excuses and not admit that all he was doing was taking a massive paycheque. In fact, it wouldn't surprise me if doing all that Saudi propaganda stuff is a part of the contracts these players sign when they go there - again, all for the PR campaign.
I'm sure the Saudi Pro League will still be able to attract older players, but players in their prime know that if they go to Saudi Arabia, the money just won't be enough to justify the dent in their career trajectory, their credibility and respect among their peers, or the cultural issues they'd have to deal with going out there to play. Like, if you sign for a Saudi Pro League club, you are literally just saying that all you care about is money - not prestige, trophies, international caps, any of that. So if you've already achieved all of those things, like CR7 and co have? Fine, go cash those big cheques. But as others have said, buying purely older players out of their prime is unsustainable and won't do anything to bring fans or raise the level of the Saudi Pro League at all - it's a law of diminishing returns.
I ain't reading all of that
nice, the internet has finally been dumbed down enough that people are unwilling to read anything more than a sentence.@@antonspannuth7023
really true, great analysis
it's kind of weird that they make the players talk about "developing the sport/league" and at the same time admit that it's just PR (or propaganda) they are interested in. contraproductive is a nice way to describe it, stupid another one.
another thing is that they claim it's part of a strategy of economic transformation and that it would attract tourist. now, apart from the fact that many clubs have attendances in the hundreds, how could that ever be working. they spent 1 billion on transfers alone, how many tourists would you need to attract to justify this economically?
however, when a dictator thinks he can outsmart the rest of the world and nobody dares to tell him it is stupid, stupid things happen.
