Nervous Niven presents a crash course guitar lesson on R.L. Burnside's "Poor Black Mattie" AKA "Po' Black Mattie" AKA "Poor Black Maddie". & "Long Haired Doney".
North Mississippi Hill Country licks played here on a 1959 Supro "Electric" and a 1970's Yamaha FG-150 acoustic flat-top guitar.
Being a huge fan of R.L. Burnside I've been obsessed with how to play "Poor Black Mattie" and close relatives for several years now. I'm a bit long in the tooth to be picking up new skills but I take encouragement from the fact that R.L. Burnside couldn't play a note till after he turned 22 when he picked up a guitar for the very first time.
My interpretation of how to play R.L. Burnside's Poor Black Mattie was worked out by ear, listening to as many R.L. Burnside recordings of Poor Black Mattie as I could find. I have so far located at least eight of his Poor Black Mattie solo releases no two of which are played quite the same way.
This video was put together as a hasty response to repeated requests; it is aimed at players who already have some picking experience. I still intend to upload a series of lessons aimed at beginners should I gain enough support from RUclips users...
If you want to see a more comprehensive breakdown of how to play "Poor Black Mattie" & "Long Haired Doney" then please show your support in the comments box below.
Great stuff. Can't wait for the full course. Hope it includes "Jumper on the Line' and tabs as well. Thanks again.
youre the only dude on youtube who comes close to the RL groove
I'm very happy this got recommended because i love RL burnside but it's hard to decipher his picking style from videos so having someone break it down clearly is really helpful
The mark of a good teacher is reducing something complicated to essence of simplicity. Achieved here.
Awesome! Would love a full lesson on Poor Black Mattie!
Thank you for all these great lessons! Maybe now even I may one day play one of his songs properly.
Yes!!
I love R L Burnside,Asie Payton and Cedell Davis...now I Love you and the lessons! Thanks Peace
You sir, are an unbelievable guitarist. Thank you for the video. It's refreshing to see someone who so obviously wants to keep blues alive. keep up the great work.
I think it's hilarious that y'all in Europe are diggin' hill country. If you ever get here, I'll give you a personal tour. Nice job on the lesson, keep it alive!
you explain very well, and you play the blues just greatly
❤️ You've given me a couple of months of work there. Brilliant lesson. The rendition would liven up a morgue
Great video.

They sound good to me. Thanks for posting!
Thanks a lot!
Thanks for posting this!!!!!!
I thought I liked RL burnside....apparently I am not the only one on the globe with a huge appreciation for this man. If you don't mind, can you inbox me links to the Open/Spanish G versions of this tune? When you get a minute..don't need it "straight away" : ) Your Colonial Friend, Adam.
The relative tuning is still G. Ab just means he was tuned sharp....The intervals are still the same.
Great Chops Mate!
Cool! Glad I found this. RL is second only to John Lee Hooker in my book.
Great video! I've become quite obsessed with R.L. Burnside's style as well lately but I've been playing it a bit differently then your versions so it's quite interesting to see a new perspective on these songs. I'd love to see a video on Jumper on the Line, I love your version of that one.
+1 for more Nth Mississippi Beginners vid's ! Great vid mate, cheers
thanks for doing this .. really helps :)
great stuff thanks a bundle
this is a great lesson! keep them coming, but I can barely hear you talk. I had to plug in my headphones
Great man thankx for ya grooves!
Outstanding. ...exactly what I've been looking for. I did Jumper on the Line for the folks at the Otha Turner Family Picnic and Goat Roast......and I need more RL. ....what a giant. ...I live in Coldwater Mississippi. ...the hills here are alive with HCB...are you close?
Would still love it mate! Cheers!
thanks so much
Thanks!

thank you for this excellent lesson, and i don't understand english lol
also.....like you and this song.....I can't find any two Jumper On The Line versions that are the same....
Great video mate.. do u know where can i find a blues/slide specific teacher in the uk?
sounds fucking great
yeah you know I know he does do Spanish tuning....it's a little confusing to a novice like me
Did RL Burnside use a thumb pick?
No... Not to my knowledge... I don't know of any occasion when R.L. used a thumb pick but I had a sore thumb at the time of making this video so I was using a thumb pick to give me pain relief.
Throughout my attempts to develop these techniques I have found the thumb pick a great way to continue practising without tearing up the thumb; it allows you to pace the building of a thumb callus without the need to stop playing (just start wearing one for a day or two at a time when you feel your thumb is starting to burn). I think you really need to have toughened up the skin on your thumb to develop an R.L. kinda sound.
Having said all that, a thumb pick can still provide a desireable sound whilst trying to develop "Hill Country Style" guitar techniques. You only need to glance at some "Mississippi Fred McDowell" uploads to recognise the powerful potential for utilising picks... In my view McDowell's technique is very closely comparable with that of R.L. but I think his distinctive sound is significantly enhanced by his use of picks.
I actually quite enjoy playing "Long Haired Doney" with a thumb pick but to my ears it doesn't sound much like R.L... I feel I can get closer to his sound without picks.
reminds me of a steam strain going on and on.
Hey man, I like you, and I know you are doing your own interpretation of RL, but this is not in Open G.
He tunes to Open Ab.
great stuff ! are you on facebook too ?
Thanks Lee... Yeah just click on the link on my RUclips channel banner or alternatively type "Nervous Niven" into facebook.
Alice Mae??? PLEASE!
poor volume... I can hear the guitar, but barely a word you are saying.
Yeah, Sorry Roy,,, The sound is a bit poor but if you plug into a stereo system or use headphones my voice is much more audible.
Great man but please raise your voice it was hard to understand you
