Standard Tuning Tutorial - Play "Jumper Hangin' on the Line".
Play "See my Jumper Hangin' on the Line".
Nervous Niven Presents a crash course guitar lesson on R.L. Burnside's "Jumper on the Line".
Jumper on the line is played in standard tuning and is in the key of "E minor". Видеоклипы
Good lesson , I do believe its played a step up however ( Fsharp/Gflat, B, E, A, Csharp/Dflat, Fsharp/Gflat)
Well spotted Mr. Brownfingers. Yes, the version of this song that I based my interpretation upon (Robert Palmer footage... ruclips.net/video/lqc9al6z59I/видео.html) is slightly sharp of the "Em" key in which my lesson is presented but, contrary to your stated belief, the original footage is nowhere near a whole step up. It's not even half a step sharper.
.
This is one of two RUclips uploads where the key of R. L.'s "Jumper on the Line" performance lies about halfway between "E" and "F", in this case it's slightly less than 1/4 tone sharp of E.
.
Much like previous occasions when similar comments have popped up on my channel I thought I'd do a little hopeful research in a quest to re-enforce my position...
.
I looked at all the relevant recordings I could scrabble together at short notice, each one being an R.L. performance that is based on the lick interpreted in my above lesson.
.
(relevant recordings... "Jumper on the Line", "Poor Boy" & Telephone Blues").
.
There are 13 unique RUclips uploads of R.L. playing this riff and I retrieved a further 13 versions from my record collection. So, in all I sampled 26 different performances and here's how it pans out.....
.
2 - halfway between C & C# (The guitar is tuned way down here)
1 - halfway between Db & D
2 - in Eb
3 - halfway between Eb & E
13 - in E
4 - halfway between E & F
1 - halfway between F & F#
.
Incidentally, one of the three recordings noted to be halfway between Eb & E was almost certainly originally played in E since there was evident harmonica accompaniment. It is highly unlikely that the harmonica was 1/4 tone out of tune and it is also unlikely that the harp player was using an Ab harmonica (cross-harp key would be Ab in order to play in Eb 2nd position). A sensible explanation for this anomaly would be that the harp player was using an "A" harp and the tape has been slowed down at some point after the original transcription giving the impression of the flattened E tonic. Tape speed could just as easily be a factor in any of pitch issues above.
.
If you bundle together those versions which are within a quarter tone margin of E then this accounts for 20 of the 26 titles. There is not one example that is a whole tone above Em, I cannot identify any performance as high as the F# you suggest. Only 15 of the 26 are actually in a true key at all and almost 90% of those are in E... I think you will agree that the stats are with me but an important point is that often with R.L's music there is not necessarily a correct or incorrect key.
.
Take this performance for example:
.

.
Somewhere between C and C# I believe.
.
As you can see I too am capable of being unnecessarily pedantic.

This might be the greatest RUclips comment I've ever read. You deserve to get paid for such a well researched response
Uncle Brownfingers lmaoooo sheeesh
i've always wanted a XOV.
😆😂🤣😅😁🤗😎😝
This is excellent! By far the best and most concisely explained lesson I've seen on RUclips. And you played the riff right! It's amazes me how many YT "lessons" are showing how to play songs/riffs/licks/etc WRONG, where the demo guy hasn't even learned it properly himself ! That's my little rant for the day. Thank you!
Yes, very helpful, and clear explained. In this way I am able to try and develop. Thanks!
I am so excited to find this! Great lesson, thank you!
Superb lesson !,
thank you 😊
just great
thanks for the lesson
Thanks for this. I've been having a hell of a time trying to get this by ear
Love it, thank you.
Just came across your Guitar lesson very good it will help me loads. Thanks
william
Tanks for the lesson dear sir you are a great player
Great video!
Thanks very much for producing and uploading this! I've been trying, with only limited success, to get this groove down and you have supplied the missing link!
Good job man. I dig your Burnside style- I hear him with your own flavor, pretty sweet!
Junior Kimbrough's "Lonesome in My Home" would be a cool lesson for us slow learners.
Bingo. The std tuning version was easier than I thought.
Nicely taught, thank you.
I am just thrilled to find this tutorial and would love to hear your teachings on other 'Hill Country Style' lessons. You're easy to listen to and describe things well. I just found out about you via the RL Burnside video of this song at Alan Lomax archives (a commenter directed people here) and I intend to peruse your other videos now. I see it's been a year since you posted this, so if the lessons are already available, then I thank you for them! :-)
thank you.
v helpful!
Burnside is my god, you are his messiah ;)
The complexity of rl’s playing makes it really hard to explain...i was playing this pretty good but after i watched this i can play it better...different ears hear different things...thanks ;-)
Great video thanks! You should come to the North Mississippi Hill Country Picnic in August of 2013.
You have probably heard this before, but I'll say it anyway: you're a very good teacher.
Thanks! Nice Xov amp ;)
I love playing guitar I'm 21 I need a little more help learning this how about another video breaking it down please
Now that you’re 23 has it gotten any easier?
Hey Bud, I have been re-listening to some of your lessons that I had in my favorites and had a song I wanted to suggest for you to pick at, have you heard "Down The Road Tonight" by Hayes Carll? Its kind of a fun song to listen to but the score has a real blues feel, not quite the Old Delta or Hill style blues but it is fun. Anyway that Is just a suggestion, keep rockin Toad!
que bueno solo que no entiendo las letras de la canción
saludos que te vaya bien
adin alejandro alarcon quispe The lyrics are describing a warning to his woman of his dark mood... The "jumper" (Boilersuit / overalls / dungarees) are hung out as a kind of semaphore flag.... "See my jumper hangin' out on the line, know by that, somethin' on my mind" --- Well that's my interpretation anyway.
I have tried to get this rhythm before. No luck... 6 minutes with you and I still don't sound like RL, but at least I can work on it.
I can't thank you enough.
🙏👏👏👏👏🇧🇷🇧🇷
can this guy play both left and right handed im sure he plays the other way round on another vid
he also has an XOV amp, and them aint easy to find! 😏
I dont thing the muting can be told couse u do it with both hands it just comes by itself
It took me years to comprehend the black idea of time, which is faster then ours
Then it took me years to get that clahammer on the level
BUT DAMN DOES IT FEELS GOOD TO BOOGIE
It Yusuf Islam every body
need an electric to play it proper
I don't think R.L. Burnside is playing it properly here (see link below), I mean he's using an acoustic guitar for goodness sake. Maybe someone should have told him that you can't play it properly without an electric guitar.

Oh no! He's playing it wrong here too!

..and here

Oh my! What is the world coming to?
ruclips.net/video/R8FoLI_j82I/видео.html
Someone with worldly superior knowledge really should have warned Mr Burnside. It's embarrassing to see him make such a fool of himself in public. I mean, everyone knows that you need an electric guitar to play this properly (maybe he doesn't have one).
TheSpottytoad thank you for showing him that! The comment got me going and I was about to do the same thing you did
