You have one of the best guitar instruction RUclips channels. Your way of getting the point across clear and concise is your strong suit not to mention what your teaching is fun to play music that people want to dance to.
These are simple riffs and so cool just like the first one with R. L. in the field , sitting down with his acoustic and his amp. Love this music , thanks for the lesson.
Man, you are doing a real service to guitar music and to guitar players period keeping this style of playing alive and teaching folks the value and fun that can be had learning it and from it. I feel like so few of the younger generations have no idea, or at least appreciate, where the history of popular music comes from. You deserve the Nobel Guitar Prize, IMO!
I honestly don’t think RL slaps his guitar, it sounds more like a simple scratch on muted strings while the thumb simply keeps the base. Learned from a blues man in the Sip delta.
I think with patience and steady slow practice to start this will open the gates to Hill County for whoever wants to go there. I am starting my 4th year learning guitar and making a one year commitment for 2022 to learn this style. This is a great opportunity for all of us now. So I’d say lets hit it while we can! I’ll still practice everything else like Hendrix, Sabbath, Soundgarden, Kyuss, punk, surf and especially Psychobilly!!! Practice every day……and there will without doubt be steady progress. 👍
Starting my fourth year of playing here, making a similar committment. Had never heard of Hill Country Blues or Burnside until I randomly came across the Goin Down South lesson on this channel a few days ago. Hooked now!
@@notmyname3681 I’m now a year after that post and much more proficient at doing this. I’ve been taking Zoom lessons with Heath on Mondays for a year and a half now. Mid last year it’s like a door was opened for me and I feel like I can really play guitar now. I found Heaths online courses amazing as well. I just started his SLAP course to venture into Reggae!
I just watched another of your vids & subscribed. Great that you can both speak about these techniques & actually DO them as well, all the while keeping an attitude of your own humbleness. Well done...now I wanna try 😅
I am having an incredible amount of fun with this. I do not sound as neat and clipped as you, but I’m working on it. Thanks so much for making these brother. Falling in love with Burnsides music.
Je te regarde depuis Paris en France et j'arrive à te comprendre très facilement alors que je déteste écouter en anglais. Tes vidéos sont donc parfaites !!!
Ive always played with a pick but have wanted to try fingerstyle. Your tutorials are absolutely excellent and have given me lots of enjoyment playing my guitar. Its fantastic you have have studied the hillside blues techniques they are awesome to play. Well Done.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You really rock man. Keep up the good work. I just subbed. I tried to learn from many tuts and I failed till I found yours n got it under my fingers in a couple of hours . So simple and straightforward without all those multiple stacked Xs of the other versions. Thanks so much .
Thank you man, love your song selections, your patient and thorough lessons and your teaching style. I'm having so much fun learning these songs, especially the RL Burnside ones. Would love to see you do more Delta slide style lessons!
Finally! It's impossible to find a teacher in this area, in The Netherlands, who can teach this style of playing. Subbed specially for this style of THE blues. Thanks a bunch!!!
Nice job again. You really have R.L.'s stuff down. But, one thing I can say after playing with R.L. for years is that with all do respect to all of us wanting to play in the Hill Country Blues style R.L. helped to popularize along with Junior Kimbrough, Mississippi Fred McDowell, Belfour, what they had going for them, and equal to their guitar was their ability to sing right along with their guitar playing. Even the slightest change like in R.L.'s voice relating to the notes he was playing on the guitar just helped make whatever song he was singing stronger. Many years ago I decided that though I may learn R.L.'s guitar style I was not going to perform his songs in public. I've written songs in that style many from stories R.L. told me. But, I just have to much respect for R.L. to make an attempt to copy him.
@@FeedbackGuitarAcademy Sure. You're doing a great job. R.L. didn't have a huge repertoire, and you know he didn't bother to learn more than a verse, or 2 in his songs, but what he could do with what he had was magical. Sometimes he'd pull something knew out like A BIRD WITHOUT FEATHERS, you know it was hard being older, and touring, and everyone wanting a piece of him. Good luck.

I’d like to know if feedback has a video that focuses on open key tuning and strumming/technique that will teach us to sound like players , R.L and Kimbrough ? Thank you.
Great video! I've been workin' on these hill country styles for years, and I ain't got there yet! Hopefully, this one will put me over the top! What I would love for you to take a look at is Robert Belfour's "Done Got Old" (or some of his other songs.. ).Or Jr Kimbrough's version...Thanks!
Kudos, this is perhaps the best effort to cop his brilliant style which I've seen. Only thing I'd say as an outside observer is that R.L. didn't really raise his hand up off the strings to SLAP them with his thumb so much as his thumb would just THWACK with a blindingly fast PUSH, through the strings. This gave his percussive dead strokes just a bit of that Guiro like scratch sound which the slap sound isn't quite accomplishing. Yes the edge of his hand which mutes at the end of the stroke had to be coming off and then closing down onto the strings, so that notes could ring in between the percussive strokes, but it appears to me that the motion he was able to do that with was just as slight as it could be. Perhaps he was the only one with the hands to do it I don't know... That scratch though man, makes me itch just thinkin' about it.
Much debate as to if is an upward thwack or a downward muted strum. Jumper on the Line video, by my old eyes would claim it is a downward motion….either way his technique is timeless….
Hey man......thanks a million for this, and your other videos ....awesome tuition ! Quick question .....I'm a drummer who's been playing guitar for around 5 years. When I play this, I'm pretty happy with my interpretation ,however i find that I'm naturally using my first finger for the percussive strums on the accented 2 and 4 beats. Any tips?....stick with what comes naturally and focus on the groove ,or be persistent and use my thumb more? Anyway ,thanks again! Great video !
Thanks! I say just go with what feels natural for you. Using the first finger for percussive strums is a great technique and it works really well with this style. You can try to add more thumb over time, but dont expect it to come really fast. Thanks for watching and commenting!
As you know, there are countless R.L. Burnside lessons on RUclips. "Black Mattie" alone has several tutorials, all of them different from one another. After years of studying it, I think your lesson is the one that will finally work for me. Thank you a 1,000 times for uploading it for free. I see that other players have trouble getting the percussive click sound on beats two and four. For the time being, I strike and mute the low E and A strings with my thumb, while simultaneously flicking the open D and G strings with my index finger. It's not an easy shortcut, but it works. I just can't get that sound with my thumb alone. My love for this music exceeds my talent, but trying to play it takes my mind off my self-loathing and my tragic life. A question: What dobro/resonator do you prefer to play Mississippi Hill Country Blues with, especially on songs that don't require a slide? I'm considering a Gretsch G9200 Boxcar Round-Neck, Mahogany Body Resonator with a spider cone. I'm looking for something that does not sound like a banjo. Sorry for my long post!
Hi, Thanks for watching and commenting! I think its important to find a comfortable guitar and I think thats more important than the sound. So I have the most fun playing on my Taylor and my Gibson for open tunings. I dont have an old resonator at the moment.
Awesome loved it at first time I heard of that guy I seen him on a blues documentary and I was like yeah he he brings you into it no doubt best to you 1 straycat 99 RUclips... Same dude haha loving the blues no doubt
Its not an easy technique- give yourself plenty of time to get it. I was really frustrated with this technique at first too but if you keep at it, you'll get it.
I’ve been trying this click for a few weeks, not easy at all but keep trying every day a bit and you’ll get it. I figure I’m a month away from the clean kill click strum. I did find a cheat for quiet strings: On electric guitar turn up reverb and add a quick slapback on delay and it will click like hell👍 My acoustic I tuned the fat E to D called drop D. That looser string clicks down on the frets easy and louder. As a last note, I have been taking lessons from Heath here and I’ve made more progress in three weeks than ever. Fast progress 👍
I don’t know about most players.. but you’re losing me with all the details.. some things just develop organically as long as you play the parts.. Thanks though…👍🏼
