- Retention ponds are holding areas for water pumped in from the estuaries before being funnelled into commercial fish farms. Very often, juvenile Tarpons, Ladyfish, Barramundi and other estuary species are also pumped in along with the water into these ponds and become trapped. They grow big over time, thanks to the constant supply of food flushed in with each spring tide. Armed with the new Rapala Shadow Rap Shad and Ultra Light Pop, Daniel Wan and KC Yong check out one of the many retention ponds in Nibong Tebal, Malaysia.

Exlent lure for mangrowjack. Baramundi grupper &travelis i love the lure but problem is poor hook quality there are many spots where plenty of roks where you cant give the drag if you loos drag within seconds the fish will stuck in roks i hope they will improove its hook quality

hi, can I use a lure that is much more heavier than the maximum weight that is written for the rod?
Hi Swee Cheong, it is possible but there are risks of overloading the rod. It's always recommended to cast with a lure weight that's within the stated lure rating of the rod for optimum casting performance.

Hi Natalie, it really depends and price can vary greatly depending on brands and purpose. A whole setup including rod, reel, line, lure can start from as low as $200 all the way to the thousands. For the lower priced setups, very often these are entry level setups and the quality vastly differs from the more established brands.

Can I use any rod for jigging or luring?
Hi Natalie, it's advisable to use rods designed for a specific purpose (e.g. jigging or luring) for optimum performance. Some rods actions and tapers are quite specific and using it other than how it's designed for can possibly result in breakage (e.g. using a slow jigging rod to cast lures). Hope this little info helps.
Can I tie my lure straight to my line or do I have to attach a swivel?
If you're lure fishing, its best to tie the leader directly to the lure using what we call the 'Rapala knot'. However, this means that you'll need to cut off the lure and re-tie each time you change lures. Therefore a good compromise would be to use a lure snap, which will allow you to change lures in a jiffy.

Exelent lure but very poor hook quality even a 3kg baramundi will easly straight the hook

Retention ponds mostly belong to commercial fish farms and therefore it's always good to seek permission from the owners first before fishing in any of such areas. :)
