I love the cover for "The Legend of MAX", it's like an eldritch song that's hidden from the public, many would go mad knowing its unholy BPM and stopping mid-song to drop your combo.
*WHY DO YOU NEED KONAMI ORIGINAL SONGS?* I think back to Max Period often. It's an absolutely perplexing song. Konami released a home console mix which included Max Period as its final boss song. The song itself is in no way a paragon of technical, musical, or gameplay innovation. In fact, it appears to be a spit in the face to players. Technically, the song is mostly a mashup of prior DDR songs put together seemingly hastily (Max300, Paranoia, Healing Vision Angelic Mix, and Maxx Unlimited), with some vocals and sound effects added. Musically, it feels disjointed, with each section feeling unfinished before abruptly transitioning to the next with little care for key changes or tempo. Gameplay, the step chart is a copy-paste of previous songs. Also, the Paranoia section is off-beat -- too much so to be unintentional. With the ease with which the song can be dismantled into parts, we can reasonably conclude that Max Period is intentionally poor quality. *But why? Why is it intentionally bad?* I have to turn to the only remaining part of the song to find answers: the lyrics. Repeated throughout the song is the question, *Why do you need Konami Original songs?* The inflection and tone of the question is left ambiguous, leaving us to guess the mindset of its artist. Here are three possibilities I've considered: *HATE* Maybe the Konami Original team made this song because they're angry at their loyal playerbase for abandoning ship to Roxor. Maybe they hate that they poured so much effort and soul into their songs, yet KaW's 3-hours-effort 2-chord generic works sold a mix just as well as their work. Maybe they feel unappreciated. Maybe the question they're asking is, *"Why do you, the players, still need us when you'll spend just as much on crap?"* *CONFUSION* Maybe the Konami Original team was confused as to why they were even being hired for another mix. Maybe the home console release took them by surprise. Maybe they didn't understand what value they could add to get another home console release. Maybe the question is, *"We don't add value to the lives of DDR players, do we? You actually like us? Want us? Need us? Why?"* *BUDGET* Producing a new arcade release of DDR was time-consuming and expensive for Konami. The lawsuit made it even worse. Maybe the Konami Original team was being paid so little to make songs that the work they used to love had become grindingly stressful. Maybe they were under contract, being required to produce work, even when all the energy and emotional enjoyment of the project was gone. Maybe the question is directed to Konami. *"Why do you, Konami, need Konami Original songs? This isn't fun any more. You've ruined any possible enjoyment. Leave us alone. Please."* *THE ENDING* I think the best answer can be found at the end of the song, where the lyrics, *"Thank you for playing."* are repeated. It doesn't come off as mocking. It doesn't feel sarcastic. *Hate* feels like an unlikely answer to the question. It also doesn't feel like an empty comment either. The cheers playing in the background don't make it feel like, "Thank you for playing, I guess." *Confusion* seems wrong as well. As for *Budget?* Imagine being so burnt out that you couldn't even manage a professional exit. You love the players for being with you from the beginning, but you just can't go on. You need to stop, for your own health. It was a fantastic ride while it lasted, but your heart hasn't been in it for months, and it's degrading the quality of your work. You hate to admit it, but this is the end. We'll look back fondly on the good times. *Thank you for playing.*
Damn this hits hard, I don't know about the Roxor drama, could you tell me (or share relevant links) on that one? 2MB is one of my most faved composer in DDR series (thus my username) so I'm really interested on this

The big thing was that the original modkits that Roxor sold *only* worked on DDR arcade machines. From there, the scope of everything they did afterward was put in jeopardy.
After going through these a couple times, the only fanmade ones I like are Max and DeltaMax. Seeing DeltaMax in action changed my opinion. It has the tempo in the bg going up as you play
The way I would look at this is one no-rest nonstop challenging mode; or in this case, Boss Rush Ver. MAX. BPM: 0.00- 780.74 Beginner: 5 Basic: 9 Difficult: 11 Expert: 14 Challenge: 17 Edit Data: 18
I did that a few days ago. A 6 songs course, lasting 8 minutes, made of all the official MAX releases. Difficulty oscillates between 15 and 17 (DDR ratings), and the min/max speed is 83/600 (although I think The Legend of MAX has a peak at 666bpm). Definitely doable for the more exprerienced ITG players.

Not sure why, but Max 300 Super Max Me-Mix stands far and away the best of them all to me as far as how they sound. Fascination Max is a close second, but it's not even in this video for some reason.
BEMANI stated that the Fascination series is different from the MAX series. Even though there's tons of crossovers between some music series. Like how MAX. (period) has literally a part of PARANOiA within the song. Or how PARANOiA ~HADES~ sounds like a crossover between PARANOiA and Pluto, since Pluto and Hades are both names for the same God of Death.
I'm trying to create my own fan song, but I just can't seem to recreate that main HIT sound. The one MaxX Unlimited literally opens up with and runs wild with in its own finale. 3:25 for reference. Anybody have any resources on where I can find a sample of it or guide on how to recreate it?

It's MAX150 from Foonmix, a series of songpacks consisting entirely of fan-made tracks like that one. In sum there was Foonmix, Foonmix Plus, and Foonmix 2. No, they are actually songs from the Paranoia series. It is a very common confusion, in the same way it happens with Fascination MAXX (100-200-400) and Fascination 〜eternal love mix〜 (2MB), they do not belong to the MAX series, but many people think that it is.
Technically, Fascination Maxx is in the Max series, but FELM is a branch off of it, placing it into a gray area. Not enough of them to have their own series, unless there are more mixes that I'm unaware of.
They are still good and worthy of recognition, and the creator of this video thought they were good enough to be included. Most people know what the official ones are anyways.

This would be a helluva competition 1v1 playing this playlist straight; could one even last to the end? Especially without the use of a bar. Only grandpas & grandmas use the DDR bar; real players play without it.
