@@BackGardenBonsai Can't wait to see if it already formed white bark or not. My 2 year old seedling, which I planted as a garden tree, already has started to form white bark :D
Wow, that is a fantastic root base! I’m going every 2 years on repotting my birch, just an fyi. Nice to get this one under the sun this years, see if that bark gets mature
the species and the climate you live in. if the they two align, they should be outside. really all your trees should be outside. that is how nature works. but of course we as humans do dumb stuff like try to grow cactus and other desert climate plants in cold wet places ...and they just wont survive outside in such places, so we look after them inside.
i'l air layering a birch at the moment. i hope it has this kind of growth. must be something in the water there 😂 can you remind me what you soil mix is again? it always looks lovely rakes out very nicely.
cheers. its just molar clay, perlite and compost. i did originally keep those equal, but now there is probably a little more molar clay than the other two.
Hi, I really enjoy the format of your videos. I tried twice to grow birch from cuttings, but without success. Have you ever tried from cuttings? If yes, can you tell me the process you used? Thanks
cheers, but no ive not taken birch cuttings. cuttings in general are strange its either ... just stick it in water and wait. ... or its like a pure science to get it right. I am pretty sure birch will root, i just dont think its as easy as some other species. just keep trying you will crack it
Truly impressive root system! Tree will haves stored up a ton of energy this year while regenerating its roots. I think being outside will help the trunk flare even more as the branches move in the wind. What kind of birch is it?
@@BackGardenBonsai Looks like a downy birch to me. My silver birch has warty shoots, which your birch doesn't seem to have. I couldn't tell it from your video here, but it probably has hairy shoots, doesn't it? Your birches leaves also looked more roundish, as opposed to the more jagged and triangular look of the silver birch.
I would probably not repot this year, just let it grow to get strong again, but that’s just me. I have a few birch, they can be a bit sensitive, a bit like willows with die back for seemingly no reason.
yeah im waiting for this one to start being fussy. as for a repot. i think its growing out the bottom of the pot a lot, so i will probably have to do something, but i wont go crazy
I always felt we need more birch bonsais out there! Please, keep it alive and growing, it´s looking great!
cheers, yeah birches dont get much love. i think its because they can be fussy at times
Glad to hear your wife’s tree is doing so beautifully! She really got you a good one😊
cheers :)
Birch make lovely bonsai, it was 2 years of severe root work that caused a slow down. How did it do in 2023?
yeah, they are a good species. its done well this year so far.

Nice trunk flare and roots! Birch is one of those species that are not common here, I don't have one so it's good to watch your progress on this!
Cheers Dave :)
Nice looking roots and trunk flare in such a short period of time. I didn’t realize how fast they grew. Looking great. Thanks, keep growing
Cheers Matt, i didnt know they where so fast too.
I believe the growth was so strong because of the vanilla supplement! 😂👍
hahah iam sure it helped 😂
I love birches young and old. Nice canopy on this one. I love the low branch you have juicing up that trunk!!! Cheers broski 😎🍺🍺
cheeers. the question is ...should that low branch become the only branch hahah. i might chop it right back to there and see what happens
@@BackGardenBonsai that would be legendary
Oh yeah. Just what I've been waiting for
Cheers :)
Nice tree glad it bounced back after last years defoliation.
cheers. yeah im glad that didnt mess it up too much

Cheers bro, yeah i imagine every 2 years is the better option, i think it will slow down a lot outside, but hoepfully the bark does mature
Wow look at that picture perfect root base!
Cheers bro!
Think it's still recovering from defoliation?
i would imagine that is still playing its part in some way too!
2 years. Its more developed than many 5 year saplings I've seen and/or have. I can't wait to see how impressive it is at 10!
yeah its mind blowing. hopefully it hasnt peaked now haha
Great looking little tree 🌳 I have that kit but haven't used it yet.
Cheers, Get it starrrrred!! :)
Very nice 👍
Cheers :)
What determines whether or not they can live outside?

Cheers, yeah i think some wind will do it good.
the pack contained downy and silver birch and i haven't worked out which ones are which yet.

yeah i think out of the kit 90% of them looked more like bowny birch and if i remember rightly this tree is one of them
