Many reporters tried to describe Ryan as an innocent victim and he was very quick to correct them. He really didn't think he was more worthy of sympathy than gay men.
Could you please do an episode about Mad Cow Disease? I think that would be the perfect topic for Retro Report.
Thanks for the suggestion!
She would be on NBC -- Rachael Madcow Show
@@majortom1950 That was cringe, bro.
I cannot believe in this day and age teens and young people do not have any education about aids. That’s terrible. They need access to care and education.
there's a special place in hell for all those people who denied a child with a terminal disease his right to education.
There were many more cases like this at the time than just Ryan White. The 1990 American's With Disabilities Act did a great deal to clarify federal law protecting the rights of people with disabilities to get an education. The 1973 Rehabilitation Act wasn't as clear in regards to disease or conditions considered terminal.
Brave Ryan changed the scope of AIDS
18 years of history on the disease should be given to him for his contribution
30+ YEARS WE STILL L❤VE and Remember You 😭
TU Ryan, Rest on
I've forgotten how far we've come. These reports bring back so many memories.
Failed to explain that though PRep is available, it’s very expensive even with insurance. Generally non preferred tiers and high deductible. Even for those exposed through work workman’s comp often tries to get them to pay then reimburse. No insurance=thousands of dollars.
This comment section is so toxic, I aint got hiv, aint in the lgbt but dayum you guys needa be a bit more humane
It was worse in the 1980s. Attitudes towards people have actually improved. Rather than hiding behind online handles people said this sort of thing openly and out in public.
@Jayden
I agree. Idk if there was some homophobic stuff that got removed, but all the comments that are hyper-focused on the details of the story, seem to be just as toxic and discriminatory.
I remember that back in the 1980s there were religious people who believed that AIDS was God's punishment towards gay people. And then there were some who thought you could get AIDS as easily as a cold. How can people be so ignorant?
I feel like Ryan was meant to change the outlook on AIDS by divine intervention. Like he was an angel sent to make a difference.
I thought I recognized that voice at 1:53
Watching this in 2022 and recognizing Dr. Fauci's voice is a trip lol
Dr. Anthony Fauci did incredible work on HIV/AIDS.
U.S. Vice President Mike Pence largely ignored the epidemic when he was governor of Indiana. He delayed needle exchange programs.
@William Baker Yes. I.V. drug users are at risk of HIV infection which if left untreated develops into AIDS. Knowing your status can help you get treatment and prevent you from transmitting the virus to others. Needle exchange programs can prevent users from sharing needles and infecting others.
The courts didn't rule in favour of Ryan's case. It was thrown out of court and he won an administrative appeal outside of the court system. An injunction was later filed by Concerned Citizens of Western School and the court ruled against them. At that point the school board wasn't involved. They agreed to abide by the decision of the administrative appeal.
Is no one gonna talk about how half the comments in this comment section are from the same guy
Only a few years ago the Howard County Historical Society did an oral history project on Ryan White and David Rosselot claimed that he never apologized to Jeanne White-Ginder for the case. In fact he still maintained that given the available information at the time he thought that he should have won the case. He resented the courts handling of it and claimed that it prevented him from becoming a judge later.
What's your point?

How is that relevant to this? He literally said that he hoped RYAN forgave him. This is literally entitled: "The Story of *AIDS* : From *Ryan White* to Today's Silent Epidemic".

*He literally said that he hoped RYAN forgave him.*
This is literally titled: "The Story of *AIDS* : From *Ryan White* to Today's Silent Epidemic".
(Dictionaries have it listed both ways. Grammar changes. The merit of my comment has not.)
You are trying to misrepresent a man's words bc you claim it is "relevant" information. You clearly can't show how this information is "relevant" to RYAN WHITE, or you would have.
He asked for forgiveness. MOVE ON.
Pure ignorance to put that kid through that
i find it hard to understand how the "the greatest country in the world" fails in a lot of thing, for i know in my third world country, the govt carries out all cost of the medications needed, they are not sold anywhere you can get them at a govt hospital, where they provide all services needed
Don't look at me. I live in a truly great country.
We helped give you those meds. Meds are available here, as shown by Jupiter taking his. Love him or hate him, Bono had a meeting with POTUS Bush in 2007 & created PEPFAR. Something like .01% of our budget goes to AIDS in underdeveloped countries. A few years ago, the beginning of the end of AIDS was announced. That's why they said "Infection rates are still spreading.". In the past, they would've said: "Infection rates are on the rise.". The use of PrEP & condoms has stopped the "pandemic of AIDS" here & abroad.
I really expected more from PBS.
I always have a sense these videos have been VASTLY edited down. I even see jump cuts in many of them - blip, and ten minutes is missing!
@@ferociousgumby Longer and more comprehensive would have been nice, but they were also lazy.
@@seanwebb605
Do you understand the definition of the word "with"? This is a series of small films created mainly by The New York Times. Occasionally, they collaborate with pbs. Writing: "I expect more from pbs." implies that you didn't read and/or understand that this is a collaboration. If you did, it implies, disappointment with whom they chose to collaborate & chose to watch it anyway. That would be your fault.
The images of the protests came after the administrative appeal. The court case by Concerned Citizens of Western School came after this. Your timeline and images are wrong.
Many of the images that you are using don't match the time and events that you are describing.
It wasn't an infection from blood transfusion. Infusion of Factor 8. There is an important difference and if you don't make an attempt to understand the difference then you really aren't doing your job.
If you can mentioned ACT UP being taught in your high school history class, you know that HIV didn’t “disappear”
dr fauci before he was famous
We need to be building monuments to Fauci.
The guy has been a dedicated public servant for decades. Recognized by pretty much anyone who matters. Why we don't have statues for people like him in the public square is just a sad indication of who we venerate.
@@seanwebb605 You're deifying a man that is beyond mediocre at his job and cares more about his political clout than actually doing his job. Allowed 60 Million americans contract H1N1 (thank god it wound up not being as deadly as initially thought) and completely failed to tell Obama/Biden to restock the depleted PPE they had exhausted which led to COVID issues. Not to mention the contradictory information that he gave regarding masks, he praised Trump's response in press conferences, then turned around and criticized it in one of his many paid TV interviews. So strange how certain groups want monuments build for largely misunderstood people. He is a public face for the work of thousands of doctors across the country, he is not a god.
