    The place where The last Crusade places itself in terms of tone, story dynamics and characters is almost exactly where I'd love Bond films to go. There is a perfect balance of drama, comedy, action, adventure, intrigue and Harrison Ford is also wonderfully charming and tough as the leading man. All that adds up to a tale that is incredibly exciting while delivering a good dose of meaningful moments also.

    This is hands down my favorite Indiana Jones movie. Sure it's kinda a soft rehash of Raiders of the Ark, but it takes all the elements of that movie and elevates it to the highest level possible. The best action sequences, the best dialogue, the best balance between heart, drama, and light-hearted comedy, and the chemistry between Connery and Ford is amazing to behold. While Raiders may have startled the franchise, Doom is the darkest and most unique of the entries, Last Crusade is just the perfect package that combines all the ingredients of Indy in the best way possible.

From a purely artistic perspective, it’s not my favorite movie, but I just find the film to be incredibly uplifting and watchable. It’s my comfort food, as it were. The story structure is perfect, the chemistry between father and son is harmonious, and the character development is enriching. I feel like Indy changed more in this movie than he did in the other films. Through his father, he’s able to find faith. The sunset scene is also the perfect way to end an adventure film.

    I don't know why, but seeing that btw footage of Spielberg, Connery and Ford doing the three Stooges schtick just makes me happy. Knowing how Connery eventually became fed up with Hollywood, it's great to see him having fun on the set. Also the opening of this film and seeing how perfect River Pheonix was as a young Indy makes me really realize what a fantastic talent we lost at such a young age.
    Lastly while I was certainly up for more adventures of Indiana Jones, the ending of this movie with the four riding off into the sunset was for me the perfect ending for this franchise, and probably the best and most satisfying endings of any film trilogy.
    . . . and then came The Cystal Skull

    This is one of my favourite movies. This must have been my first real exposure to who Sean Connery was and I remember being in disbelief that he was James Bond in the ‘60s (I was very… very young at the time). This is one of those films I can credit with my love of World War II history, as these films were the first I’d really heard of the Nazis, along with the 1963 film The Great Escape, which I also watched and fell in love with at a young age. I remember Raiders and Last Crusade being some of the first favourite films I ever had.
    It’s probably the action sequences and comedy that did it for me, but that’s what you care about more as a five/six year old child, versus the deeper implications of the storyline.
    The Nazis are always great villains and I love how Spielberg doesn’t really film them in a Riefenstahl way (asides from the terrifying Hitler scene), but does them as if it’s Springtime For Hitler. He makes fun of them. I once watched an interesting video essay about how this was a way of getting back at them, I may love Inglorious Basterds, but this is the true face of Jewish vengeance.
    The action sequences are both hilarious and brutal. Nazis are easily and violently dispatched. These films were made when PG actually meant something.
    I’m guessing this film was supposed to take the series back to being more like Raiders, very similar cast, very similar plot, and I loved Raiders and I’m not really a fan of Temple of Doom so… Here’s hoping we get another film closer to something like this for Indy 5. I don’t hate Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, but it’s just so mediocre, at least you can remember more about Temple of Doom.

Daniel Craig guest stars in the episode, but since it was made in the 1990s, his name isn't even mentioned in the opening credits. The Last Crusade has always been my favourite in the series as well, and it also happens to have my favourite Sean Connery performance.
    In a lot of ways I feel this is the most well balanced film in the series in how it meshes the comedy, action, mystery and the more personal character moments.
    Also I really like the role Elsa plays in the story, even today it still feels rather refreshing to have a villain love interest that doesn't either get replaced by another love interest or is fully redeemed by the end.
    I'll admit though I have slightly mixed feelings about the young Indy segment, it feels like it goes on for longer than it needed to.

    This film has 5 James Bond veteran actors in it! Amazing! Sean Connery (Bond), Alison Doody (Jenny Flex), Julian Glover (Kristatos), and Michael Byrne (Admiral Kelly). I enjoy all 4 of the Indy movies, but "Temple of Doom "is my favorite. If you remind me of the adventurous hijinks of Bond in India in "Octopussy" that's an automatic win! "Raiders of the Lost Ark" is an absolute blast, but falls short on character development. Now that's where "Last Crusade" shines. Its the funniest and most dramatic Indy adventure. It's good fun with a probably the best cast of characters in the series. Also, I feel "Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" gets a bad rap. Its got a lot of fun sequences in it, another winning John Williams score, and has a nice ending sequence with Indy reuniting with Marion Ravenwood. You have to have the mind set that its supposed to be a throwback of 1950's B-adventure and science fiction movies. It's not perfect, but its intentions were good. Finally, there have been far worse legacy sequels made to beloved film series, e.g. Die Hard 5, Star Wars 9, and Jurassic World 2.

    • @ricardocantoral7672
      @ricardocantoral7672 2 года назад

      But Crystal Skull isn't a throwback to 1950's B grade Science Fiction movies. The film follows the 1930's serial formula expect Aliens are shoehorned in. Crystal Skull has some fun chase scenes but it's a lousy film overall. The antagonists are milquetoast, there are at least two too many useless side characters, and the gritty violence is practically non-existent. Indiana has one kill he is responsible for and it makes no sense.

    • @Dohsoda
      @Dohsoda 2 года назад

      @@ricardocantoral7672 Last time I checked, fall out shelters, bomb testing sites, Aliens, Russian armies, the fear of Communism in America, greasers, Rock n' roll were all based in the 1950's. John Williams even uses the era popular instrument of a Theremin to underline the other worldly aspects of the film.
      The villians may not have been great, but they were acceptable. There have be weaker Bond villians. I love the science fiction aspect of the movie, but it should have gone further with it. I never thought of the Indy movies as gritty. They're more in line with the slap stick action of the Moore era, but with some intense moments. In Indy 4, a man gets eaten by ants, and the main villain gets burned and disolved at the end. Indy being responsible for few kills doesn't bother me. He's an adventureur, not an assassin.

    • @ricardocantoral7672
      @ricardocantoral7672 2 года назад

      @@Dohsoda Those were all tropes thrown in that basically were of no consequence once Indy leaves the US. The film really feels like a first draft was slapped together, Lucas and Spielberg wanted to define the era and then they said, screw it, let's just go back to the standard formula and have Aliens in there. Crystal Skull was a lazy, slapdash effort that Spielberg didn't even want to do in the first place.
      When I say gritty, I am speaking of the violence. Have you watched the previous films ? This series famous for some of the most brutal kills in film history. Heads exploding, hearts being ripped out and set on fire, burning to death by lava, crushed by a rock crusher, slashed by a plane propeller, alligators ripping people to pieces, and so on. Indiana Jones isn't an assassin but you best believe he has blood on his hands. Between two films, this guy must have machine gunned, run over, and blown up half the German Army. As for the deaths in Crystal Skull, they were CGI generated fluff. Lame.

    That guy in the opening who's called Fedora in the credits was originally written to be Indy's mentor Abner Ravenwood. I kind of understand not committing to that in case they wanted to go in a different direction later on, but I really like the idea that he was supposed to be Abner. From what's said about him in Raiders of the Lost Ark I always assumed he'd just be the typical stodgy professor type, but a guy like the Fedora character turning out to be Indy's surrogate father figure is a lot more interesting to me and I think it makes a lot of sense. In my own head canon I like to think of him as Abner anyway since it's not like there's anything in the movies that contradicts that.

    Excellent review! The Last Crusade has always been my favorite Indiana Jones movie and one of the reasons is Sean Connery as Henry Sr who as we've all said is perfect casting. It was great that Steven Spielberg didn't just make Indy's dad just an older version of Indy but a unique character unto himself. The one negative thing I'll say is (and it's not done badly in the movie) I feel like this movie sort of invented the unnecessary prequel in the first fifteen minutes. Except here, Spielberg did it right. We didn't need a "every wonder where Indy got his whip and hat??" the movie and we thankfully didn't get it. Obviously stuff like that happened in "The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles" but that was TV not a feature film. Anyway the movie is damn near perfect and Connery was a large part of what made it so good. He was also hilarious in the tank chase scene. Great video!

    Apparently when Steven Spielberg conceived the opening scene in this movie he was playing with the idea that the archaeologist that has the leather jacket and the hat that Indiana would eventually patent his look and style after was actually Abner Ravenwood.... Marion's father.... It's left kind of ambiguous... They rewrote the script and rename the character. But if you look at his mannerisms and his admiration for the young Indiana Jones it's clear that if who Steven Spielberg intended the character to be. Unfortunately they rewrote the script and took that out and it's kind of ashame.... That would have been a great way to bring everything full circle.

    This film is a lot of fun, though I do find the lighter tone to be a bit strange in places. I wish Marcus and Sallah had had more to do than just be comedic fodder, not to mention the villains are a bit less memorable this time around, but I can definitely see why so many place it as their favorite. Ford and Connery steal the show and their chemistry is just perfect, not to mention that John Williams' score might just be the best in the entire series. The emotional stakes are the best in the series and it's a great watch, despite a few minor gripes here and there.

    This is one of my favorite films in the Indy franchise, the other being _Raiders of the Lost Ark._
    Elsa Schneider is gorgeous, and I like her villain. A person who wants to be a sympathetic person but can't distance the part of herself that wants power.
    Sean Connery (my favorite Bond) and Harrison Ford bounce off of one another pretty well.
    And for many of us: The 'riding off into the sunset' was the ending of an enjoyable trilogy of films.

    Ah yes, the greatest Indy movie of all time. Connery's great in as Indy's dad, Harrison Ford's arguably on his best form here in my opinion, the unlikely prospect of making a Nazi sympathiser sympathetic, and a typical megalomaniac villain who wouldn't be totally out of place in the Bond series without a few minor tweaks. A+ for me.

    I prefer Raiders over Last Crusade, but it’s very close for me.
    What’s great about Sean Connery playing Henry Sr. is that the age gap between him and Harrison Ford is only 12 years, but you completely buy their Father and Son relationship thanks to the script and the acting between the two.
    When Harrison was congratulating George Lucas on his AFI Life Achievement Award in 2005, he said he’d be on board for Indy IV (later Crystal Skull) but said if he waited for too long, Sean would be too old to play his father. It got a big laugh and we all know why.
    Anyway, keep up the good work!

    This is definetly one of my three favorite movies, alongside Back to the Future and Good Will Hunting. The Last Crusade manages to capture the best the Indiana Jones idea has to offer! I'm quite sad that we didn't get to see another Indy movie made in the 1990s, which would've been set during World War 2 and might have seen another couple of scenes with Sean Connery as Henry Sr.
    I constantly reference this movie with my dad. It's been important to both of us and especially the scene at the beach, when Henry Jones Sr. shoos away the flock of seagulls moved me as a child. Indy's facial expression in that scene reveals to us that he's had a change of mind regarding his dad. He lights up and finally sees his dad, not just as the excentric and stirn boss who criticizes him for every move, but as an intelligent, charming person that he can admire. A similar thought entered my mind, when watching the movie for the first time. I remember realizing that my dad was just as much a person of his own, as Indy's dad is. As a child, that was pretty enlightening.

    Terrific review of a
    Great great timeless classic!
    And when you look back and really stop and think about what they did here - nothing less than the teaming up of two of the greatest Movie Stars of ALL TIME -
    it becomes even more remarkable.
    James Bond and Indiana Jones in the same movie???!!
    It’s just not something you saw happening in Hollywood back then
    - a kind of Avengers team up before there was any Avengers in the MCU!
    I remember when I first read that Connery was going to play Indy’s Dad
    I and most moviegoers expected him to just play a sort of older action hero - probably in the style of James Bond himself.
    Instead, he brought a quirkiness and a old fashioned classic professor like quality that was really unlike anything we’ve ever seen from him - and it was just tremendously entertaining to watch - and much more fun than a standard action hero would have been!
    As you pointed out - their chemistry really was magical -
    and it’s a shame we never got to see them work together again.
    Raiders has been my favorite film of all time for many many years …
    But no doubt about it-
    there are many things in this movie that are definitely done even better!
    One of the most purely entertaining films of all time!

    Ironically, my favorite scene concerning Last Crusade isn’t even part of the film.
    It’s in documentary footage (probably part of the special features disc), concerning the sequence of Prof Jones scattering seagulls to attack a German warplane. In one of the shots, Spielberg calls action, and the stunt pigeons (because there’s no such thing as stunt seagulls) just stand there and don’t move. We then get a shot of Spielberg collapsing on the ground in helpless laughter.
    To me, that footage demonstrates the secret to the success of the Indy franchise. It’s all born out of the love that Lucas and Spielberg have for the B-movies and serials of the 1940s and 1950s, and Spielberg wouldn’t have collapsed into giggles like that if he wasn’t having fun in the director’s chair. If Spielberg’s having fun doing what he’s doing, then chances are good the film will reflect that and the audience will pick up on that and have fun too.

    Indiana Jones is basically the American James Bond. The difference is that it’s a period piece whereas the Bond films have always been of their time and current. I wouldn’t mind a Bond miniseries as a period piece based directly on the novels, and it would alleviate some of those “me too concerns.” You could get away with Bond acting like Connery’s 007 all the time without having to apologize for it.

    • @jamesatkinsonja
      @jamesatkinsonja 2 года назад

      I really don't see the need for that given the novels were fairly closely adapted anyway, especially for the Connery films [and do we really need a Goldfinger remake give that is a masterpiece?]. If you want a new take on them, try the radio adaptions with Toby Stephens.
      Do bare in mind that aspect of Bond was downplayed as early as Man with the Golden Gun where Roger Moore didn't like that material and asked it to be removed from his later entries, The new books can do that as it's a much more niche audience.

    Connery was the ideal casting as Indy’s dad as his Bond was primarily the inspiration for Harrison Ford’s Indiana Jones. Connery essentially steals the whole movie and his chemistry with Ford provide the film with its greatest movie moments. For me this entry will always be the best movie in the series, also this movie was the highest grossing movie internationally back in 1989.
