Slight spoilers if anyone wants to analyze the game themselves: Engine evaluates the position as a dead draw (literally 0.0) from move 19 onwards. Only way for White to keep the slight advantage (0.5) would've been to sack the exchange on move 19 for initiative on the Queen and to get that central pawn with the Bishop. Material equality is only restored with perfect play 5 turns later. Frankly, sacking that exchange isn't a human looking move so both players played as well as they could. Nice game.

Apparently white had Rxd5 on move 19, sacrificing the exchange and creating a major imbalance. It isn't winning, but very tricky and I think unpleasant to play as black.
Eric in a tournament really epitomizes “Eat. Sleep. Chess.” But for him it’s more like “Chess prep, play chess, play more chess, chess, chess analysis, chess video, eat, sleep.” Haha
At 6:56 I thought Qa4 was worth considering, but I guess it leads to unpleasant queen activity, and probably at the very least a perpetual after Qb7+. You can't hide your king on g6 because of the nice oh no my pawn h5+, and the knight is lost no matter what you do.
Crazy that the pawn blocking the diagonal was the inaccuracy that gave up any advantage either of you had. Most of the game was 0.0 with both of you usually playing the best stockfish move!
I’ve dropped 131 elo in the last week, lost 70% of my games, and never want to play chess again, but at least we’re getting daily Rosen content so there’s still hope.
Im a novice so im not sure, but if white played e3, all that'd do is lose 1 defender on the knight that it was guarding; if black took on d4, e3 pawn in this scenario shouldnt take because itd be an isolated pawn.
@@Pyxyty Harvey after the pawn capture in the centre white played e3 and black improved his queen to e6. It’s a subtle difference but generally you want to prepare all quiet moves before the position breaks open. In this scenario white cost himself a tempo he should have seen that e3 would be useful before opening up the centre
Given his explanations why pawn takes (cxd4 or dxc4) are no good for Black, e3 seems logical, further improving the position while Black runs out of such small improvement moves. But I think that those positions are not only about pawn trades but also about putting a knight on e4 or e5. If White does nothing, Black will sooner or later jump in, and vice versa. Maybe White should have considered e3 even one move earlier, when Ne4 Nxe4 fxe4 Ne5 f5 runs into the fork on g6. The rook might later be better placed on e1 than on d1. But I understand why White was reluctant to play e3: His previous moves (Qc2, Nd2) were meant to prepare e2-e4, so White wanted to keep that option to push the pawn to e4 in one move instead of two.

Eric is such an awesome guy. Played him in a simul out in Vegas this summer. Super nice and humble.
